oafc joe
With a crowd of sub 2,500 on Monday and beating a team with some of the players they had and a team who will be definatly finishing in the top 6 this season. We have been over achieving for the last few years by and large and long may it continue. I am not getting to carried away by Monday's result but I am saying we do, do quite well considering our budget and the crowds we get. We are probably on a similar budget to leyton orient, bury, Rochdale and so on and we're above them in the table. Also I think everyone of Dickovs signings (with an even tighter budget than last season) have all been good or at least decent.

This sort of view really grates me - i do accept that the likelyhood is we will not be one of the top 6 this season, but by the same token I take the view that no one can prediect anything in this division. Ask me now who will finish in the top 6 and i could honestly not predict with any degree of certainty which teams will be there as there are always one or two who suprise. OK, i'll renegade on that a little and say Sheff U and Charlton will be in there, but the rest is. as always, up for grabs. There is very little between any of the sides in this league on a given day and i would honestly only say that sheff utd can be described as too good for this league, however even they havent ripped up any trees. We saw on monday that, weather regardless, we can beat the peter beagrie-indulged 'top teams' - our squad when all fit is a pretty decent one and with the young kids coming on all the time and the team as a whole finding a bit of form and grit I see us being within just as much a chance of the top 6 as anyone else. whether we will get there is another matter - but this belittleing of the team as punching above our weight (crowd-wise yes) is just not true in my opinion - not one team has a right to, nor are they garuanteed, to be up there in May because 'they have a big budget' - every team will have to earn it. it is on the pitch where it matters, not on the balance sheet and if the players all want it enough, then top 6 is there for us, just like it was for little financially stricken 'not-a-hope-in-hell-of-getting-there' Bournemouth last year. KTF While I agree with some of what you write, I am not sure that describing a team as 'punching above it's weight' is belittling - more a realistic observation on the financial 'weight' behind the club. It is a fact that the teams with more money will be able to attract better players and in theory should perform better. We have some decent players at the club but we have had to cut our coat accordingly - when all the players turn in a decent performance we can beat supposedly bigger teams - but it does require exactly that - players playing to their maximum. A great performance against MK Dons needs to be replicated throughout the season - and it's the better players who should deliver more consistently. MaskedOwl
have to give a lot of credit to the owner, manager, staff behind the scenes, and youth system. it's a tough job.

KTF If you look at the top 7 of League 1: 1. Charlton 2.Sheff W 3. Hudds 4. Mk Dons 5. Preston 6. Notts C 7. Sheff U Does it really look very surprising or unpredicatable? With the exception of Notts County, you have got the biggest 6 clubs in the division with the most money. What are the chances that 4 or 5 of them will be in the top 6 come may? What crowds did we get then? We are punching above our weight, on Monday we got a worse crowd than eve stick premier side chester did in a home game this season
stargazer
As you well now Monday's crowd was an artificial one caused by live tv & exasperted by the weather. Crowds were a little higher in 74-91 , but not markedly. Quality management , support of the brewery , profit from sales were the main reasons. Lower league football was not like today were a whole team are practically shipped in and out every 12 months.

MaskedOwl
not bad for a team punching above their weight to sign an experienced striker that was still playing for a prem team just last season ;)

That signing was punching above our weight but shows that its not always about having money, its how you use it. My feeling is that PD would be able to get Oldham or any other club in this division promoted for less than other managers could, because he would be able to attract big name players. However, you still need to have some money to do that and we are restricted.
oafc0000
The problem with our weight is we have been suffering from anorexia for about 14 years.... with a small period of bulimia (Chris Moores) in the middle....
