the_mighty_bosh
Nearly going out of existence aside, this is the worst I've ever felt as an Oldham fan. It's been 18 years since we last played at Wembley (one year before I started following us) and over 20 years since a promotion. Everything was set up for it this year, not just a club I could love but finally a team who I could genuinely fully support as they possessed the intangibles in abundance, even if they lacked the required quality (as usual). Over the two legs we had 47 shots to their 19. That hurts, but Chris Taylor's tears at full time due to not guiding his home town team to what's likely to be a once in a lifetime opportunity comes much closer to telling the full story of my feelings. I learned tonight, it really isn't the despair that gets you, it's the hope.
Ritchierich
I've supported the club for 42 years....we've had maybe 6 great seasons in that time!! The enduring beauty of football is that the clock is reset every season

JoeP
I can take losing games like this to a team that were better than us (like Blackpool were in the play-offs, say), but another defeat to a team we are better than is just too typically Latics. Wembley '94; QPR 2003; JPT 2012 - we are the perennial "oh so close" club.

She supports Everton, they won the league the first season she started following them, she's been to Wembley 4 times, she's never seen them get relegated. And they think they're hard done to cos they're not in Europe. And don't even get me started on the other lot. "Oh Liverpool fans really deserve to get to the League Cup final for sticking by the club through the hard times, they haven't been to Wembley for 16 years you know." Oh how do they cope? 16 years away from Wembley with only 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, a Uefa Cup, a European Cup and a European Super Cup as consolation. In the 18 years since we last played at Wembley, we've been relegated twice, gone into administration, had part of the ground demolished with no concrete plans to replace it and had the council sabotage every attempt to move or redevelop, so the very least those of us who've stuck by the club through all that deserve was a Johnstones sodding Paint Trophy final. Oh well, at least we didn't lose on penalties.

singe
Yeah true, there's always someone worse off. Well said. Gutted, but I thought Jack Lester talked balls when he said they deserved to go through. Yes, they won fair and square and the score doesn't lie, but "deserved", not a chance mate. Tommy Leee the difference for me. One that the performance someone is going to get a right pasting, or we will go (er, carry on) into freefall. stargazer
Keith Edwards equaliser 14 seconds after the kick off of the original playoffs was a gut wrenching experience. Mark Robins FA Cup Semi final replay winner in 1990 was the worrt experience for me , I literally could not speak getting on the coach at Old Trafford. As a a long time fan who is amongst the fortunate ones old enough to enjoy the golden years from 89 ,I didn't think losing would bother me too much . Wrong , very wrong , I still feel empty today. As for the rest of this season , the opportunity to watch Robbie Simpson masterclasses is the highpoint for me , enjoy , I can't for the live of me imagine some bigger fish won't net him this summer. 24hoursfromtulsehill
This is NOT worse than our defeat to dirty Leeds in the first ever play-offs. Not far away though. We'll always have those 90 seconds at Anfield.
Roger Ritchie
All I want from the club is improvement year on year. This year we have got past the first round of two cups for the first time in Donkeys. Now all we need to do is finish a few places higher than we did last season. Then make sure we improve again next year.

Especially considering that many of these younger fans did not witness the 'glory years', and the highlight of their time supporting latics could well be a playoff semi final vs QPR or Blackpool? Add into that Steels's late equaliser for Wolves destroying all hope of the Play Offs in '90… Losing to Spurs to all but seal relegation in '94 Stitch's Penalty miss at Elm Park It's all one big ball of :censored:e……I really feel like I need a break from all things Latics, but i'm scared I won't want to go back……so i'll be there Saturday, and if I can sort a lift I'll be there at Stevenage too….. Yep i'm one of these fans and off the top of my head those are the only highlights in the 18+ years of me following the blues (in terms of potential signifcance, i do sorta count the cup wins over City and Everton but going up would be something else!). I don't think i'm more dissapointed than others who have seen the glory years as we've all seen the following 18-20 years and its a fair old glory-less trek for anyone regardless of if you managed to see past success. As for last night, to say i was gutted was an understatement. The goal they scored seemed to go on in slow motion and to rub it in it was a comical balls up between CB an GK, not even a decent strike or well earned goal. I was straight out the ground at FT without the people i'd come with and and marched across claytons not wanting to speak with anyone. I might be mad though as i can't wait for Saturday to, hopefully (i know it's that what kills you ), get stuck into Leyton and put last night behind us ASAP. GlossopLatic
Nearly 24 hours after and I'm still devastated I cannot think of a more frustrating night at Boundary Park in my 22 years of supporting us. Mark Hughes goal was devastating as too were the 2 relegations and the 2 play off defeats but for outright frustration that definitely tops the lot. Its the manner of the defeat that’s so hard to take 25 shots last night 47 over the 2 legs so we are averaging a shot every 4 minutes over 3 hours of football and only 1 of them finds the back of the net. Will we ever have a better chance than that to get to Wembley in this unfashionable trophy but one that could have been the catalyst to great things. Look at where Man City are now the catalyst for that was the 1999 3rd division play off final victory against Gillingham might not be seen on its own as individually their clubs greatest achievement but will be amongst the most significant as it started a chain of events which has propelled them to where they are now. Staring in that was our own Paul Dickov who seized the moment and took his chance. Football rewards those who take there chances and brutally punishes those that don't and that’s the lesson that has to be learnt from last night if those players are to go on and achieve anything in their careers. As Fans of this small unfashionable northern but honest football club it makes you question your life choices as it seems to keep happening to us Play off defeats, second half of the season fallouts, ambitious stadium plans turning to dust. WHY THE F@CK DO WE BOTHER EH! well having watched the Liverpool United game on Saturday I realised how boring watching football can be if you don't care about the team involved I'm sat here now with the Everton City game on in the background and its not really bothering me whatsoever. I don't know about what anyonelse's day was like but I was asked why I bother paying money to watch the standard of football well the team that plays at that standard is the team I love and who can tell you what you should and shouldn't love no F@cker can and knowone should either. I'm going nowhere! this is what I care about and this is what I will keep doing one day we are going to have one mother of a party when we finally celebrate winning something. Roll on Saturday where we will have 7 shots and probably score 8! Typical Latics!
