oafcprozac Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 (edited) Fishal Losing £20k a week and looking to postpone a game 27 hours in advance! Sod Orient, this decision should not be made until first thing Saturday. The weather people have said they don't know for sure whether the milder system of weather may win out over the cold front yet we're not prepared to wait? 8am Sat morning would give the 150 Orient fans more than enough time….Ah well can't blame Alan Hardy this time can we? stargazer Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 The last thing needed after Monday is a postponement , the sooner the team play again the better imo. My lawns are frozen solid , unless it warms up dramatically this will be off . I'm sure The Smiths could have penned a tune with lyrics describing the depressing start to 2012 of our club. Quote
oafcmetty Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 It'll be the Orient team that will be setting off tomorrow that they're worrying about. Quote
Stevie_J Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Seems hasty. You might as well call it off based on the weather forecast. A pitch inspection tomorrow lunchtime doesn't really mean an awful lot. Quote
welshgaz Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Really hope we dont lose any games to the cold snap. The long lay off last season didn't help with a our slump. Think we got whipped at hartlepool last seaon after a long lay off. We could end up with a fair few games in hand which will only increase the pressure for points. Quote
Latics and England Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 As usual the club can't win on this one. Call it off tomorrow people will say they should have waited until Saturday morning, wait until Saturday and you have to stump up for Orient's travel and accommodation costs. If the weather forecast offers little hope of a thaw, for me they are doing the right thing by making an early call. Quote
opinions4u Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 If it's going to be -4C on Friday night and the pitch is already frozen, with top temperatures only hitting +2C I can't see a thaw happening. Quote
longtimeblue Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Thank Fook.. Didn't really fancy Orient at home in minus temperatures. Quote

leeslover Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Is that true? I've never heard that before. It's true. Anyway, if it's colder up there than it is in London then I'd be buggered if I'd go out playing football in it. Quote
Latics and England Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Is that true? I've never heard that before. If the game is called off after the away team has set off you are liable for their travel and accommodation costs for the rearranged game. There was quite a bit of pulicity about it a couple of years ago. I think it was something like Huddersield v Leeds and Leeds insisted on staying in a hotel the night before the game at Huddersfield's expense. The home team challenged it saying there was no justification for staying overnight when the journey was so short but the challenge was unsuccessful. I might be wrong about the precise teams involved although I'm pretty sure it was Leeds. Quote
maddog Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Didn't we have this issue as well with a southern team who wanted to stay up here to go to Manchester for their xmas bash in 2010 (when they were due to play us), and the game was called off. The details are a bit hazy. Quote

I can see why the club would want to get it called off early, if they really aren't confident about the pitch thawing. There's almost no question it'll be off as the temperature isn't set to get much more than fractionally above freezing between now and then. Quote

Bates claimed that because kick off was brought forward to 12pm, Huddersfield were liable for their accommodations costs as otherwise would have necessitated the players setting off at an 'unreasonable hour', or something of that ilk, to travel the 13 miles needed. Then when the temps went up to 5-6 degress on Saturday (as it is predicted this week) we looked complete fools when we were the ONLY club in the entire football pyramid that had the game called off. So what if they have to pay Orients expenses , that wont be of any great cost and we need to bounce back quick after Monday. If it is off then we have a tough away game on Tuesday and lose that and the rot may set in for the rest of the season !!!!! Quote

Tonight's temperature is predicted to dip to -7C and around freezing tomorrow night. Saturday AM temperature has to climb to around +10C to melt 2 inches of penetrating frost. Not realistic at all. I predict lots of games will be called off at grounds without undersoil heating. Edited February 2, 2012 by Fyldelatic Quote
stargazer Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Hard not to reminisce back to the 1980's & our game being on because of the undersoil heating when many others were off. Do I recall Blackburn throwing home advantage during a freeze and beating us at BP in their 'home' game ? Also didn't they or some other Lancy club play a fixture at our park , not involving us ? We are losing enough money as it is without having to pick up another club's travel costs! Besides anyone who thinks this match stands a chance by waiting til Saturday is clutching at straws. I predict many matches to be called off tomorrow, this cold snap will undo anyone without undersoil heating this weekend!!! Quote

To be fair, despite my initial annoyance in the OP there is now a severe weather warning in place for heavy snow on Saturday, hopefully i'll get snowed in the pub. Preferably the Hark to Topper with their open fires…. Quote
