Latics shooting practice in training

Recommended Posts

I think we rely too much on crosses into the box for on rushing players to bundle in. I can't remember the last time a striker received the ball with his back to goal in the opposition box before turning and firing it in or laying it off to either his strike partner or a midfielder to knock in.

I think this is where we are one dimensional and make it easy for other teams to suss us out and nullify our threat.

When they had the Roger Palmer night a few weeks back, the Junction played a video of Roger's goals, and it was obvious then (especially given that it was straight after the 0-0 with Exeter) what we're missing: Someone to get on the end of loose balls in the box, to anticipate where the ball's going and flick it goalwards. He scored some really simple goals, the likes of which we haven't seen for a long time, but he had the art of picking the pocket of a defence, ghosting into position and getting enough on the ball to guide it home without having to hammer it. I guess a lot of that comes down to agility and speed of thought and our strikeforce is not geared up for that. But someone should be at least trying to get into those types of position.

Oh, and Roger was probably on the Jim Beam and JD during the game, let alone the training!

You can't replicate this sort of thing in training as in real matches committed opposition players throw in meaty tackles - something you won't get in practice routines.

As suggested a specialist midfield runner or goal poacher is what's required, unfortunately there isn't one in the squad, nor anyone to hold the ball on the edge of the area. PD has had long enough to bring such players in, but has failed to do so.

I would like to remind everyone that we are due to batter someone sometime soon.

Between November 22nd and December 19th Latics scored 19 goals in 7 matches - why did it all go wrong ?

In fairness to PD, he hasn't been able to call on his two front men since Reid's injury, a partnershop of Reid & Kuqi may well work like this, Kuqi holds it up for Reid to smash it in?

Maybe Beag, but Kuqi is not good at holding up the ball IMO and I don't really class Reid as a goal poacher.
