Chris Birchall

So we need a midfielder due to both our first choice lads being out for some time. Furman's return is anyone's guess…despite what PD says, he was limping badly the other night and in most people's opinions will not be returning any time soon. Chris Birchall has been training with us, yet today has agreed to go and play for Port Vale for two months free of charge. Can't help but feel he would have plugged a very large gap, and costing sod all would have been ideal….

I agree with you Prozac however Dickov is the one seeing him in training every day and if he thinks Taylor is a better choice in CM then Birchall cant have impressed. The fact that he was agreeing to play for free and we still didnt take up the option even to have him as a back up when we are short in that position suggests he must have been way off the pace in training.

Originally he was training with us to gain some sort of fitness - the possibility of him playing for us was dismissed at the time. Now we read that he is off to play for free for the club where he started his career - so maybe the lure of his first club proved too strong to resist?

We can only speculate as to the reasons why he was not offered the opportunity to play for us given our current midfield situation.

It does seem like an opportunity missed though.

1. Dickov's seen him in training and obviously doesn't think he's up to scratch.

2. He won't be playing for free at PV, Micky Adams has confirmed it.

Still, let's all have a gripe.

No one is having a gripe there just trying to establish why we hasn't signed a midfielder who would appear to be on the cheap and who has a decent reputation. I for one are extremely nervous about having to play a midfielder who lets face it for large chunks of most games doesn't get involved and and an out of form player out of position against a good side. We shall see.

The fact he's playing for free has been plastered all over Sky and Twitter, unfortunately i'm not Micky Adams' bedfellow so haven't seen that interview….

Im guessing he would play for Vale free as he has played for them before and has a great relationship with the manager.. Whereas why would he play for Latics for free no relationship with Dickov or no history at the club ? People need to remember that these footballers arent Latics fans they are just guys earning a living

I cant beleive just because he has played for Vale before means he will do it for free again.

He has never even played for Adams before has he, where has the great relationship come from?

I'd play for free because I live locally, it would keep me fit and the club means a lot to me. But it's about whether Micky thinks I'd benefit the team.

"We have a good relationship because I played under him at Coventry and Brighton. I would only do this for him.

Cheers Razza, didnt realise Birchall played for Cov or Brighton, saying that now looking at his stats he hardly played for either of them.

Just seen Adams quoting on the Vale website that the storys of playing for free made him laugh as you get nothing for free in football.

  • 2 weeks later...

would he do a job for us??? Dont really know too much about him. Even after today i still think we need someone in the middle who can had a bit of strength and bite

I think he would do a better job than Winchester in the middle on today's showing. He wouldn't be better than Furman or Tom though.

One question would be what we would be paying him with as I doubt we can afford to pay him in washers at the moment.
