Charlton have just bagged £11m from Everton for that kid Lookman. Clearly he's talented but that seems a huge price and a big risk for Everton, given his age and inexperience.

Money's not much of an object in that division. Makes you think how worthwhile academies are in these times then.

There's an article in the Chron today about a 17yo lad in ours who got into the matchday squad recently and is attracting attention. Apparently a ball-playing centre mid but not physically ready yet - sounds like Banks is at 24...

There's no doubt our instability and constant struggle impedes youth development. It's why it's so daft that we can't blood young lads in the JPT without being fined.

The best of the youths when I saw Uche v Birmingham, an energetic midfielder with some skill.

We will play the first team against Mansfield.

£11mill is mental, how do we compete with that, we wont see £11mill for normal income in 3 years!

And we dont have the luxury of saying F-you to anyone who comes in with even a paltry offer for this wonderkid we have got!

It'd be nice if we had a couple of wonderkids to have this problem about.

Would we be any worse off if we'd played three or four academy players this season, despite Bury not winning a game for months two of their kids (16 and 17) are reported to be interesting City, if we don't play these kids they will never even get noticed, there must be a midfielder at some level more capable than what Banks and Green have shown in the last month or two.

We have no reserve team in a competitive league to test any of our youth.

One of the questions I believe SC will be asked is was axing the reserves a mistake, if so will the club be entering a team into the Central League next season?

Hindsight a beautiful thing.

I'm talking about going forward I'm sure with hindsight Banks wouldn't of been offered a two year deal but it doesn't mean we should just persist or bring in another loanee to make their mistakes with us, we've got youths who never seem to be given a chance.

Have there been many youths recently who didn't get a chance with us who have gone on to do something? Can't think of many.

Doesn't mean they couldn't have developed. Plenty of lads who never have a career when they had the talent.

Not many, but Scott Hogan (see link below) and Will Buckley are now worth millions.

Think Rochdale at the moment are playing two 20 year old academy graduates in their centre mid, and they've got another who's injured at the moment, and they're the form team of the division...

Do they have a team in a reserve league because it's incredible what they're doing right now. The assets they have at that club will probably keep them running for another ten years.

I've mentioned him on here before from Dale a player called Aaron Morley who I really rate whose played in midfield for them this season, he left school last year and is only 16 or 17, big lad with two good feet who rarely gives the ball away and always looks for a forward pass, only seen him twice but definitely one for the future.

Dale do what they do because Hill plays the youngsters but also protects them, he doesn't use the kids as an excuse when they get beat and banish them to the bench or ostracise them, our power point managers who've invariably just done their badges have little time for the youngsters which is a shame, players like Edmondson are being held back because of the manager merry go round, I'd guarantee if he was at Dale he'd be a regular and they wouldn't be looking to play a poor loanee in front of him.

In fairness to Robinson, he did give Mantack a game at the beginning of the season but you just feel like at this club once a youth player has gone out on loan that's it for him. Never to be seen again.

Does everyone not realise though, that 17 and 18 year old lads playing regularly in this league ALWAYS create interest from above... Fulham nearly signed David Mellor for 300'000!!!! Honestly, put some of our most promising young lads in like Edmundson and Uche and they'd create interest and maybe even a fee.

Forwards make the big money and we haven't produced one since I can't remember when, has to be more to it than them simply not getting a chance.

Who was our last one to make it into an England squad? Beresford?

They don't have to be nearly that good these days to earn you big money with the cash knocking about in the Championship.

This may be a total myth but it seems like often strikers are rejected and then transferred between clubs before they start scoring prolifically.

It does make you think though, if we didn't put one of the kids out in this season of unprecedented barrenness, then when will we ever do it.

Like Tom Eaves going for 1/2M?
