2016-17 A review of the seasonm

Recommended Posts

With due acknowledgement to Matt Chambers and his excellent summary of 2015 here's my take on how next season could pan out.

Villain of the year

Despite being sacked immediately following the 4-4 draw with Colchester David Dunn is the undoubted winner, blamed for what many saw as a combative and uncompromising management style and his unforgivable failure to win every game 6-0 with a side comprising 90% of players signed by Lee Johnson Dunn is still reviled by a section of Athletic fans, none of whom go anymore but still blame Dunn for relegation from Leagues 1 and 2 and damningly for being a short-arsed :censored: from Blackburn who had the temerity to be honest with the fans. Bastard.

Quotes of the year

Tough one to call but will narrow them down to three,

"We should be hammering teams like these ninety nine times out of a hundred. It's imperative we make it through to the third round of the FA Cup. I'm not putting pressure on the manager though" Simon Corney speaking before Athletic slipped out of the FA Cup at the second round stage to a late winner against League 2 high fliers Portsmouth.

"Simon, any chance of an update for the fans as to where this leaves the club? Simon, Simon....SIMON????........'The recipient has terminated the call. Have a nice day'. " The Chronicle's Oldham Athletic correspondent and unidentified American operator as the reporter makes a fruitless attempt to elicit a quote from the Athletic chairman following the clubs' second successive relegation.

"The North Stand will definitely I repeat definitely be one hundred per cent ready in time for the start of next season, get your season tickets now and don't forget if you buy them before August 1st you can book your Christmas party in the Broadway Suite at a massive 1% discount. we'll even have TV's installed by then. Probably." Simon Corney by text from New York, June 2016

Goals of the year

Not to many to shout about although returning favourite Scott Vernon's consolation two yard toe-poke in the 7-1 defeat to Forest Green brought back happy memories of his similar effort against Man City in the famous F.A. Cup win 12 years earlier. Sadly his goal against Forest Green was his first and last for the club this season, the 34 year old veteran, given a 3 year contract in January sadly retired through injury after only two appearances.

Assist of the year

Again, not many spring to mind but 37 year old Richie Wellen's sublime 30 yard pass to Jake Cassidy in the above game takes some beating. Unfortunately the ball bounced off Cassidy's shin and the chance was wasted.

Hero of the year

Who else but Simon Corney? If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have a club.

If you want a club like ours, so badly run, then you are easily pleased! Supported them for 57 years and I'm disgusted at the decisions that are made - we deserve better! Yes I'm thankful to Corney up until the last twelve months - Ched Evans, Kelly and now Dunn; our latest trial it's fresh from prison - we're an embarrassment!
