Build Oldham's Greatest Footballer

Recommended Posts

Surely the fastest defender was also the fastest striker. Warhurst, although did someone not say Marshall was quicker which would still apply to both.

If someone could head a ball harder than Fryatt I have yet to see him.

I would agree with the Fryatt comment.

The player with the hardest shot in my watching days, was Ken Knighton

Goram was immense for us especially one on ones, best first touch I've seen an Oldham player have was Ron Futcher the ball literally stuck to him regardless of the pass he received, as for the best attacking header of a ball not many would beat Andy Linigan for me he was a great header of the ball for a defender, especially from a corner kick when at times he was unplayable.

He's also a very funny speaker despite being a slightly racist monarch loving ale can.

Best scorer of spectacular goals: David Eyres and Lee Richardson but not far behind both Danny Whittaker (No seriously go back and watch his goals for us they were always absolute peaches)

Reuben Hazell - just for his volley at Elland Road. One of the best goals I've seen us score, mainly because it came out of the blue in so many ways.

Along the same lines of Danny Whitaker, I'd add James Dayton and Cristian Montano to the spectacular goals contenders (Dayton vs Swindon/Carlisle and Montano vs Stevange/Rotherham). Robbie Simpson and Gary MacDonald also spring to mind for obvious reasons, but both came up with a few screamers in the league as well as the cup. Mark Allott is worth a shout too, especially for his volley at Huddersfield.

We've got some good wingers in these lists. What ever happened to the art of wing play? I was watching the internationals, and it just confirmed how few wingers are around. Football has become very narrow. Players taking up wide positions rarely want to take on the full back. They check inside, tap to someone else, but rarely have a run down the flank. Even then, the number of crosses that never seem to get beyond the first player is really high. We need a campaign to reinstate the art of the winger. Dribble and cross. Pace and skill. Actually, doesn't even need pace, though it helps. Ricky wasn't quick, but he was very accurate.

Bring back the winger! Bin your ticky tacky, tippy, tappy bollocks.

It's must be one of footballs simplest art form get round the full back cross to the forward score.

What better sight 2 wingers with over lapping full backs?

Absolutely. Expansive football, played on the floor at pace. Fergie, Cloughie, Joe, all played it that way.
