I hope Oviedo win through the play-offs just for him, anybody who plays with the heart, passion and desire that he does deserves some success. He's a tremendous character who could have been an absolute legend at BP.
MaskedOwl
Shezs BIGGEST MISTAKE not giving him at least a chance. Could see him playing with any of our present forwards and making an impact at our level. Knows where to be to knock it in any way he can, big, physical, and can head a ball better than most. A real threat at corners. OK the opposition is dire but 26 goals again says he can score given the openings. True Latics Legnd in the making if he had signed. There must be a very good reason why Shez didnt give him a chance. Diego_Sideburns
Real Oviedo lost in the play-offs, so it's back to the drawing board in the Third Division next season. Sound familiar?
Diego_Sideburns
I've had an email from David Kershaw, a Latics fan based in Spain, who is my contact with Diego Cervero. David says: "I've just had a call from Diego, out the blue really as I haven't heard from him for a while, though if they'd got through the first round of the playoffs I'd planned to see him play against Antequera as it's not far from here. Still it wasn't to be, even with a much stronger team than Lealtad had last year, Oviedo couldn't get past the first round though they were a mite unlucky this time. In spite of his team's failure in the playoffs, on a personal front it's been a mighty successful year for Diego. Top scorer in his league with 26 goals in the regular season, he's been offered a new improved contract with Oviedo and other clubs have expressed an interest. He rang me to say though that in spite of this rosy picture here, he'd like to go back and have another go in England. He 's determined to try and make a success in England and as he's now finished his medical studies, perfecting his English would be a real help for the future. Of course Latics would definitely be his first choice, but he is realistic and told me that if neccessary he'd play at a lower level. I suggested he try Scots Prem." David has asked for help to make Diego's ambition become reality. I've forwarded the email to Alan Hardy to see if he is able to help in any way with contacts, etc. If anyone else has any useful suggestions they would be appreciated. slystallone
Welcome to the fan club. It was Rocky who started this thread, so he's member No1, Derek bought a Real Oviedo shirt so he's No. 2, I'm No. 3 and you're No. 4. That makes me #5 then - plans are in the early stages but me & my mate are trying to get over to Spain to watch Oviedo & our man in the flesh!! I really think we missed the boat with Diego - marketing income alone would have surely covered his temp contact; sombreo's / names on shirts / his own line of club underpants - the possibilities are endless. I think Shez's record with managing 'mental' players may have put him off signing Diego, if he couldn't hadle Craig Davies then he would have a 'mare with Diego. Remember reading an article on Mark Hughes (our lad, not the red / light blue scummer!) and he was asked something along the lines of 'who was / is the biggest character you've played with?' & Hughesy answered Diego, saying he nutted the walls in the changing room before games, used to bite & chew his boots & was generally 'lively'...........what a character & what a missed oppotunity. Does anyone have any info if he got anywhere with his attempts to come back over to the UK to give it another shot - i'm guessing we ('Tics) didn't give him a second go as we'd have surely heard something???? Let me lnow if and when you're going to Oviedo. Mrs. Sideburns and I keep saying we must go but we haven't made it yet. If you are going I'll try to arrange for Diego to meet you and/or get tickets for you. He still follows Latics from afar. Sean Jarvis had all sorts of marketing ideas ready for if Diego was signed, but alas..... As Shez was still not interested in him when he finished his studies, Alan Hardy passed on Diego's request for a trial to Bury and Rochdale, but it doesn't look like anything came from it. Diego_Sideburns
I'd like to know more about Diego Cervero I love a to use it as an excuse to prolong this thread which tells you all you need to know about the Latics legend, and marketing-man's dream, that never was. jimsleftfoot
Perhaps IF the hospital flats get built "Cervero Close" a good choice. Perhaps he can get a transfer to the Royal Oldham and then become the club Doctor/striker!!
