Stat - Latics have conceded the first goal in 15 of our 23 league games this season. In all probability we're a lower mid table team, say two thirds of the way down the division. Not really surprising that we've conceded first in two thirds of the games
Featured Comment Bristolatic Posted January 17, 2021 Featured Comment Share Posted January 17, 2021 What an enigmatic team we are. We can go from playing like total strangers who have never seen a football, let alone each other, to putting together brilliant, one touch, neat passing football. Trouble is, it's more of the former than the latter. Garrity is the prime example. How many times yesterday did he fail to complete a pass to a team mate stood 10 yards away, then swings a 40 yard cross field pass to the opposite wing. Keillor-Dunn is a rarity in that he often traps a ball with his shins and it just runs away from him. Then, when you least expect it, he gets it dead right, beats his man/men and slots it in the bottom corner. Lawlor looked much more assured yesterday and, hopefully, he's got the Mansfield nightmare out of his system. CB-J baffles me. I honestly believe that, at times, he's one of the best LBs in the division; tackles well, picks the pass, gets forward, fizzes a superb cross in (but there's no one gambling on getting in there) and then reverts to being out of position, mistimes tackles, gives the ball away when not under pressure and can't manage a cross that gets beyond the near post. Jombati, although he had a good game yesterday IMO, is not a CB. Whether he is more effective than Hamer at RB is debatable. For a young lad, Clarke is a great prospect. He's still a bit raw round the edges and his lack of experience means he will make mistakes, but he will get even better as he plays more. For someone that Leeds obviously rate very highly, McCalmont is a real disappointment. He sometimes just can't get the basics right and often looks like a very average League 2 player. He has his moments when you can see his class, but they are too few and far between. Ntambwe is decent. He breaks up play pretty well but, like so many others, his passing can be awful. As we don't really have anyone else to play that role, if we want a defensive midfielder, might as well stick with him. Bahamboula, for me, should start every game. He has undoubted skill and frightens defenders, so he just needs to improve his decision making. He can't take everyone on all the time, so he has to learn when the right time is to bring others in to play. McAleny is another who was disappointing yesterday. For much of the game, I forgot he was there but, again, he's a starter for me. He won't always have that sort of game every week and he does have the knack of being in the right place at the right time, but that effort that was close to clearing the stand, oh dear. Hilssner looks like he's going to do well for us. He's got skill and vision and a lovely left foot. Rowe must start every game. He's such an intelligent footballer, but needs more support. A draw was a fair result, but we need to start games the way we finished when we made Walsall look very ordinary and had them panicking.

If we're stuck with him, perhaps Kewell should be encouraging him to get wide and instead of trying to hit a man, just get the ball across into a dangerous area? Which is what most teams at this level do, get it into the box and see if the defender "cocks up". A decent cross and alert forwards following up will lead to plenty of goals in this division. Monty Burns
Looking for new ways to score is about as far away from what we actually need as you can get! Launching crosses into the box with a team that hardly ever wins a header is just another way of losing the ball, we do that way too much as it is already. Yes, lno you said 'decent cross' and not 'launch' but for that to work you need somebody with a 'decent cross' and our best would probably be Rowe which would mean looking for people like McAleny and Bahamboula. Next best be Barnett, he's on the bench. lf this whole idea is either spawned from one good Garrity ball or an actual concerted effort to find him a starting spot then lets put it back in its box already. Big well done to Garitty on his third above average 30mins of the season . Pass accuracy yesterday 67% thats pretty high for us, but still shit. Bobledgersheart
Didn't mean head high crosses which is obviously not on with our forwards, more low hard driven balls rather than just faff about on the periphery. We seem to try to score "perfect" goals rather than play the percentages against bottom division defenders. My point is we haven't the forwards of stature to aim for so it's a bit of a waste trying to find them so just hit it low and hard a few times instead of attempting to find a 5'10" forward at the far post with a floated cross. I am not a Danny Rowe fan ..only 19 league starts in 12 months , only scored 4 of our near 40 league goals this season and other well rehearsed arguments etc etc ......but even to me it seems a strange decision to move on a fans favourite and talisman, who while not the player many think he is is, capable of show stopping moments and interventions. The owners appear to learn nothing about building its fans base and generating a “ we are all on a journey together “ momentum Does he want a lift to Bradford? latics22
It smacks of lack of ambition. Realistically what are we getting for him? 50k? Is that even a months worth of wages? It's a drop in the ocean. People will say cash in now, as to not lose him for nothing. If its 10 million yeah, not 50k. Mo prob thinks he doesnt score enough goals and that's why he shouldnt be in his job, hes not looking at the bigger picture. It's short sighted financially and lack of understanding of what he does on the pitch and even worse a lack of understanding of what the fans want. Why do they want him? He ripped them a new one ! There below us, there struggling. All the reasons we should be keeping him. They may as well sell bam and mac as well!
