Come on Barry

Am not having that any kid who saw Latics become 2nd Division Champions and spend a couple of seasons in the Premier League are anything other than Latics fans

I was taken to my first game in 1992 - missed the league win by one season.

I still support Latics - only thing I blame my step dad for in the negative 🤣

Really? I was a teenager around that time and nearly all the lads I know who were Latics fans back then now support City or United. There are a couple of us who still support Latics, but most switched clubs a long time ago.

This lad is just one of many:

shocking that Barry

I blame the parents, the kids likely couldnt read n write and know how to use a knife and fork when they left school if they werent taught the basics of supporting your local club

It’s more a case of people not getting as emotionally invested than changing clubs. That was my point

fair point Andy

Normal folk dont switch club loyalty although I will accept they can lose the emotive link with their club

Or never really develop that link in the first place. I would suggest there was a lot of that in the 1990s. Crowds dropped fairly rapidly post relegation

Crowds were dropping even in our last season in the top flight.

I remember when we played Swindon there was below 10K.

That will be the case for some. I and my family moved away from Oldham in 1995 and suddenly I was starting high school in a place where supporting Oldham would have you laughed out of the place at best - eating your Latics shirt at worst.  It was Liverpool or United, nothing else - and it was Chorley so no where near either in reality.

I lost a bit of interest and climbing trees with my mates or trying to snog Lizzie Hurst from 7b form became the Saturday norm

inexplicably in 2000 I asked my dad (step) if I I could come along again just before Chris Moore landed - guess I still loved the club but peer pressure and hormones were put first

Dont know why but maybe others just didn’t get that draw

Were you successful in your pursuit of Lizzie Hurst?

For me the best years of supporting Latics were in the late 90s, when I was 13-14 and first allowed to go on Barlows with my mates.

It was excitement of going to somewhere like Reading or Wycombe etc without any parental supervision, robbing the overpriced service station of sweets, crisps and porn mags!!  Loads of lads were a similar age who went so it was just a good day out.

And once we were 16-17 we were into the football casual scene.

It just goes to show the football isn't the only factor that creates a love for the club.

Not in the slightest!! She went with a United fan 😂

Bitch!

You were better off without.

I was one of those who was brought up and started supporting us in 1990 but I think I carried on because my Dad carried on, and my brother then also became old enough to watch us so we just carried on and pretty much carried on ever since. My Dad as was a lifelong fan but didn't always attend as was my Grandad as was my Great Grandad and it just became what we did on Saturday.

I sort of understand the whole peer pressure thing about growing up in a town which isn't Oldham, and supporting Oldham Athletic. Its probably bad enough for those of you in the town who support Oldham. However for those brought up outside the town its even worse. When you turn up to your junior football team in an Oldham kit when everyonelse is wearing a City United or Liverpool top other kids look at you like you've got Cholera.

Funnily enough though I befriended other kids who supported lesser supported teams aswell. I was the only Oldham fan in my year and I befriended the only Bolton Wanderers fan in the year,  some of my other friends included the only Coventry City fan and the only Sheffield United. It was an important life lesson in learning not to give a shit about what people think about you. Plus making friends with those fans made for more interesting conversation.

I actually remember one lad on a non uniform day wearing a Latics shirt and when I said “oh you’re a Latics fan”? He vehemently denied it

saw him in the Chaddy end many times in the years afterwards and both laughed at the ridiculousness of it

Those are the ones who said they'd be back as soon as SC left...

Some did come back and ST sales went up....until we were relegated and realisation set in that we had yet another bell end running the football club!!!

85/86 for me. Good timing really- experienced a bit of rough along with the smooth, but more than enough smooth to get me hooked, and then boom - crack cocaine. Well worth it for the hangover whihch has been the past 30 years.

I know 2 ex season ticket holders, who now go city. Dont understand how u can celebrate another team scoring and enjoying it more than oldham scoring, makes no sense.

I suppose its easy if you have no emotional attachment to Latics anymore.

Absolutely it is...

Can't imagine how boring supporting a big team must be.

I agree. It must be pretty dull supporting Celtic or Rangers, watching them stuff teams like Ross County & St Mirren every week. People talk about the Old Firm derby(s) but the rest of the games must be boring as hell.

I know when you meet someone and they just tell you they support one of the big premier league teams it usually kills the conversation you know they just watch on sky and will regurgitate what the pundits say.

However when they tell you they support someone random like (picks random club out of thin air) Rotherham my ears pick up straight away, great let's talk about favourite away grounds.

I remember a few years ago when a Utd fan said I could never get as much enjoyment from supporting my team as him as he had seen his club win the champions league and I never would

No need for a response.
