Why put the pressure on ourselves by passing to our midfield? At least we get the chance to regroup when he kicks it into touch.

Adams worked hard, Badan did ok, Fage bright and is looking stronger on the ball. The formation didn't suit Conor Mac or big Dylan but they were trying. Puzzling to see DKD so ineffective, first touch has deserted him. Its a big job eh Keith? Baden did ok? He's terrible he got skinned more times than a banana! The whole match was shite, we have managed to go further backwards.

TheBigDog
Good - Lawlor, Piergianni, Fage Bad - McCalmont, DKD, Badan, Average - McAleny, Bahamboula, Hilssner, Adams, Ntambwe, Diarra No real impact - Whelan, Jombati The contest resembled a game of attack and defence. We were lucky but did defend well. Piergianni - Captain Fantastic.

Hilssner was probably worse though. Having said that these players know there's few options he can choose from so can drift through games without any concern. Featured Comment the_mighty_bosh Posted March 9, 2021 Featured Comment Share Posted March 9, 2021 Well Curle's had an early impact alright. Although he's definitely thrown the baby out with the bathwater with regards to our attacking play. I think the pre-match team talk was simply "keep a clean sheet and all costs". That match is the best argument I can think of as to why Wheater would only have made a marginal difference at best to our position this season, because we've gone from a manager who offered the defence no protection whatsoever with his strategy, to one who's given the defence all the protection it could possibly hope for. As a result Piergianni was in his element and was MotM by a mile, Lawlor, though a distant 2nd, played very well. There were some OK performances by Adams, Fage and maybe Whelan but other than that the players looked like they didn't know what they were doing, especially the attacking three. For all of Kewell's team's faults you at least knew that our attackers could produce something out of nothing but that wasn't close to happening tonight. I think Curle got what he wanted from tonight and as boss that's his call, my biggest criticism is that he set up the team in such a defensive way that it resembled us being deep in a relegation scrap. Let's be honest, with goal difference taken into account Southend would need 12 points more than us from their last 12 games to leapfrog us. We realistically aren't in that dogfight, we had positives that needed to be added to rather than overhauling everything and starting again. The only way that kind of performance will be justifiable is if he's laying down a marker to the team ahead of next season about the basic standards he expects. Which is fine if he has an owner like at Northampton who backs his methods to the hilt (and of course patience from fans). It's a risky strategy with owners like ours. For a manager like Curle to get results the whole club has to be fully understanding of his pro's and con's and let him do his work over a full season. If he's only here for the rest of the season then that performance isn't worth it.

Even with the same starting XI, we'd have looked much better with Ntambwe at CB, Badan at LWB and Hilssner in midfield. We need two new CB though urgently if we are going to play three every match
LightDN123
Honestly, I don’t want to watch that type of football from whoever is in charge. I was sat bored. At least previously we thought we might score, I just sat there hoping we don’t concede knowing full well we would never score. Weird, boring and baffling. George Kinnell
Once again we offer nothing going forward. Our threat going going forward coincides with CBJ playing. He might be left back and might not play enough but he offers precision and pace with balls forward and instant control and progession
