BPAS PODCAST: 19th Aug '24, S5E4: The Double Standard

Recommended Posts

It was HOT in North London as Latics faced Wealdstone, a team we'd failed to beat in two seasons in the National League. But this team is built different.

Good podcast as always.

Maybe the lads were getting a tad carried away at the start - I think the key thing to remember is that we are two games in to the season and a cautious optimism should be the message.

There were periods on Saturday where we did give the ball away too easily and we are still growing into this new Mellon style of play.

Dave summed it up with his ‘we’ve turned a corner’ comment. Thats how I see it.

And Dave… it’s CHARSLEY (no ‘n’) 😉 you’re welcome

Keep up the good work - the quiz questions are still a bit meh - but loving the output 👍

The bit where Dave said we'd hadn't won the first two games since 1986/87 can't be right. Not sure if we've done it since but we won the first 5 games in 1990/91.

First two without conceding?

Enjoyable as always, only criticism surrounds team selection for Tuesday, for me Kay and Gardner are two different types of midfielders so Kay would be unlikely to come in for him. If Gardner is rested I think Mellon will go with Lundstrum or maybe even drop Charsley in deeper as he has the ability on the ball. Kay probably will start at the expense of Hammond and maybe Caprice for Ogle.

Quiz is becoming a waste of time, questions are so obscure it's about how many you can guess not how many you know. I know Paddy is a bit of a phenomenon with regards to Latics and would probably still know five or six of those but most diehard fans would be lucky to guess one or two at the minute. I knew none of those today and one last week, as the guest commented I can't even remember some of the answers never mind know them.

6 this week. Didn't get the White Hart Lane one or the Andy Ritchie one.

The first question was actually a question on it last week too...

05/06 under Ronnie Moore, against Yeovil and Swindon.

Although in the next game we lost 4-0 to a team in white.  😳🫣

Don’t know if this matters.

But he actually said, first time we’ve won the first two games without conceding was 86/87.

Ah fair enough!

I remember the Swindon game in 05 when we were 3-0 up after beating Yeovil 2-0 on opening day, then we very nearly threw it all away and drew 3-3 at the end of it!  Jamie Cureton headed against the post with what was pretty much an open goal with the last touch of the game.

Love the podcast but think the quiz needs a reboot. No slight on Paul, hes done a sterling job providing the questions for the past 3 years but there are only so many questions you can ask about latics.

Just a suggestion.

But I wonder if the quiz could be an either/or. So many times I remember the player or game when the answer is revealed; but plucking it out of nowhere is really difficult for everyone bar paddy.

If you gave a couple of answers to each question (or even half of them) the scores would be much better.

I think if you put four ordinary fans up against Paddy 'The Chase' style he'd probably still answer more.

It will probably take me till Christmas to get six right.

Definitely! 😂

I think that’s the point though, the quiz for 99% of guests and listeners has become a bit meh - because it’s so hard in its format. (Think my top score is 3)

Give people more a chance to get some right. Then paddy can wipe the floor with everyone in the final.

I think the quiz works well, but largely depends on how old you are. Got the two Beckford ones today and would fancy my chances against most people about questions from 1990 to about 2003, but with age most people fill their brain with more important information.

Jimi Goodwin - you could give me 1,000 guesses and I wouldn't have got it. Absolutely no recollection.

Think I got 5 on the quiz I don't know how I would fair under the lights though my knowledge is from 1990 but having read team from a town of chimneys when I was about 12 and the 100 year book aswell my knowledge is OK I think.

We've still a long way to go we are not just at the start, we are start of the start it's a long way to go yet but the fact the word control keeps getting used which suggests that their is not just a plan in place but we are executing it. Looking forward to tomorrow night we can really start to build some momentum with 3 games in the next 6 days. We might see the first signs of rotation in these games.

You should look it up. Much more fun...

They are different times so it's hard to relate.  It's similar to you watching footage of Latics from the late 1950s...

It's a fair point, but I'd say there was a case for football being at it's peak in the 1990s.

It was becoming "cool" after the violence associated with it in the 70s and 80s and hadn't yet become completely money orientated.  There wasn't the massive gap between the big clubs and the rest that exists now and the FA and League Cups mattered.

And for a while we were probably the best team in the country thanks to Joe Royle's eye for a bargain, rather than just having money to throw around in the hope of success.

We won 3-2 didn't we? And then got mullered 0-4 at Tranmere to burst the bubble.

Regards the quiz, perhaps a bit of a refresh is needed? I quite like the one that the Football Ramble used to do where you have to state how many clubs you think can name that a player has played for and two take it in turns until one says "Right, name them". You could do that with a former Latics player and pit the guest against one of the hosts (or Paddy).

I appreciate your reply but I wouldn't say it had reached it's peak.  We averaged 11 thousand when in the top flight.

I think if we were in the Premier League today and had the capacity we would have a 16-17K average attendance similar to Brentford.
