Over 600 Latics fans travelled to North London for a 5.30pm National League game against Barnet - that is terrific support. Their reward? A 0-0 draw...but Oldham stopped Barnet from winning ten home games on the bounce, which is nice.

Good guest - talked a lot of sense.  The OASF membership/season ticket idea a good one.

I'm not sure there's a better time to point out GN9's value to the team than after Saturday!

I usually agree with Andy but there's been minimal evidence for maybe ten months that Norwood is better than Fondop.  Can't live on past glories for ever

I'm also not too sure 4 (albeit very good) games last season is enough to justify Stones' as an automatic starter. Got to show he's still got it.

Play your top-scorer.  I'm sure that was the argument for Norwood last season, so I'm not sure why it's changed now.

Was more like 1 and a half games...

Always a good listen.

Couple of things that Andy said that I don’t like. We need to stop referring to opposition as bus stops and leisure centres.

Also disagree with the comments consistently made on Fondop. For me he gets into our best 11, particularly with the form he has shown this season. He brings something we don’t have and it should be one from 3 to start

up front with him.

I think most people are in the Fondop starts camp. Got to play the players in form and he is on a hot streak.

Fondop has to start on current form. If/when he stops scoring that’s when we can look to put him back on the bench.

I think Fondop is a must Saturday. He will defend our box against their long throw.

He’ll get some help from the rest of his teammates but I take your point 👍

I finally know where I went wrong with the questions when I appeared on the podcast.  After listening to a few others I’ve noticed I was the only numpty that didn’t pass and tried way too long to answer everything.  Next time I do it I’ll be aiming for my usual 4 or 5 right at least.  👌

Have to agree there, provided he doesn’t head one in the wrong net.  😂

Re the pod, another good listen, have to say that is the 1st time I've been ashamed with myself for scoring 0 on the quiz.

You should be. There were a couple of Drummond-esque tap ins to be had.

In my defence the fan guest was way quicker than me so given a little longer I may have got one.

Agree with this. Having hated all my life the condescending manner that big clubs and their supporters show to "little clubs" like Oldham, I don't want to replicate that Billy Big Bollocks BS while we're out of the league.

More importantly, it doesn't mean jack sh1t that we are Oldham Athletic when we cross the whitewash, just as Huddersfield found out when they played Tamworth in the FA Cup. We may (do) have a more illustrious history and bigger fanbase but at 3pm on Saturday afternoon it counts for little.

When we go out to play thinking we are Oldham, we're above this tin pot league - we lose. When we roll up our sleeves and earn the right to play, that's when we win.

I think it's taken Mellon, and time, for the playing side to adjust to our surroundings and realise that we are where we belong to be for the present. By and large, I think the fan base has got it too with the more supportive atmosphere. The SLC can be a bit of fun but there's no divine right to success in football based on size and history.

You're absolutely right in everything you say,

I myself have fallen in to that trap, call it a lack of acceptance but we can be forgiven that when we come from a certain age bracket.

I'm not really that bothered about anything above League one and hopefully we'll get back to that level before my own demise.

A good listen and thought the fan guest made some really good points.

On the Conlon discussion though, as he gets a fair amount of stick I wonder if he's being judged too harshly because of the role he is, or isn't, playing. To me it looks like he's playing a deeper role where his main focus is to be available for a pass all the time from the defence and to then keep things ticking over by keeping possession or looking to start something. His highlights reel from Port Vale seemed to show him further up the pitch, scoring goals and creating chances. Whether thats because of his injuries or if its just that Mellon sees him as the best person for that role, he's playing a totally different position for us.

So judging him on that role alone I think he's having a good season. Last season with the ball at a centre back's feet their options for a pass were players like Sheron and McGahey. No wonder there were so many aimless pumps forward!

4 on latics mind. I'm staggered. I need a lie down to take that in.

I'm with you on the position he's playing and that he's an upgrade on the players we played there last season. I also expected something more dynamic based on the highlights reel but he has zero pace, don't know if he had it before his injury but he doesn't now. But what he does have is bags of footballing intelligence and he's a leader too, so he's been worth his place.

If Payne stays I think it might boil down to Conlon or Clucas at the base of midfield with Payne as the legs, can't see how we accommodate both in the current system.

That's why I think he's playing a role where pace isn't an issue.

A change in formation may be needed based on signings. A 4-2-2-2 might work with Conlon and Payne deeper, and Clucas and Lundstram as the number 10s. Charsley to come back into that role too with Gardner back up for the deeper players.

Mmmm, I think it matters less, he'd be a better player if he had some acceleration but better to focus on the positives. It will be interesting to see how the formation develops as the squad evolves, and you suggest a way that might happen, although I'd be concerned about a lack of width in that system. With the current system it would seem to be a choice between Lundstram or Charsley when he's back, you'd struggle to accommodate both which would be a shame as both fine players.

Yeah width would have to come from the full backs and from the attacking mids and/or strikers pulling wide. But I suppose that's where our current width comes from anyway.

Will be interesting to see what happens. It's only an issue really when/if everyone is fully fit and available, so no rush to change formation.

...and a nice problem to have, genuine competition for places.
