JoeP Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 ..unpopular. 821 sold so far to Leyton Orient is incredible. Talk about Membership schemes on last night's phone-in. We're taking off. Thought it might be worth everyone stating their case for where they stand in the "deserving rankings" by stating what tiny Latics away followings you've been part of, in order to gain your entitlement to away tickets in the future. Having a season-ticket for 30 years doesn't count... I'll start: - Brentford FA Cup replay in 1998, live on Sky. 150 max. - Palace in both 1995 (when Hallworth was up front - really bad snow) and 1996 (when Graeme Sharp's popularity really started to drop). Talking 100ish.. - Gillingham in 1998 in midweek - must've been about 50. - Portsmouth away 1997 - No more than 100. Quote
TwistingMyMellon Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 I was at Reading in September 2000 when the fuel strike was on. There weren't many there that night and we lost 5 nil..... Quote

Gaz_Oafc Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Only manage to do the odd "big away day" where the numbers are decent so I'll be waaaaayyyy down the bottom of the list. Was at Swansea away for my birthday in 2007 where we'd had bad weather in the lead up and the numbers weren't huge. Atmosphere was class though. Richie Wellens was suspended and was in with the fans. Thought Matt made a good point on that, if we go up there bigger grounds and bigger allocations. There’s no way we’ll take 2/2500 every away game. People will get plenty of chance- even non season ticket holders. Quote

A team winning every week in the National League will probably always get more travelling away than a struggling team in League Two anyway. An extreme I know, but I know some proper Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday fans that have season-tickets yet absolutely no chance of getting away tickets because of lack of "Fan points" etc. That really would be the downside of success... Agreed. Tranmere/Rochdale/Orient are the exception at the minute not the rule, and people are riding the wave with one or two of them games When they come along. There’s also the money factor. Constant away trips gets very expensive. When it’s Bradford/Salford/Tranmere back to back people will start picking and choosing again. On the wolves point. That’s one of the reasons I love supporting Latics. We’re a big small club if that makes sense. Where you can always catch a few games a season if you can’t make every weekend. 1 Quote

Stockport at the min give a maximum of 1200, as do Wrexham, although the police only gave us 900 in the league game at Wrexham. Small ish allocations at the likes of Harrogate, Salford, Fleetwood, Morecambe, Barrow, Chesterfield (who now only give half of a side stand), Accrington, which we’d sell out easily at the moment, with people missing out. There’s a few down South also such as Exeter and Bromley although unlikely that’d be an issue etc. I recall DR saying a membership scheme isn’t feasible at this level as the majority of clubs take care of away tickets themselves but if we went up it’s something they could look to do as it seems less of a thing in the FL, with the home team sending the away team tickets instead. yarddog73 Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Lowest Premier League away following I remember was in December 93 at Portman Road start of December and we took less than 100, 0-0 draw that I only went to because Sean Mccarthy made his debut, I started going in the mid eighties when crowds were as low as 3 or 4000 at home, only really went to local aways with Barlows back then, lots of fans came out of the woodwork when we went up but soon disappeared when it went downhill as is the case at any club, getting away tickets will be a problem back end of this season if we carry on improving and it will be a nightmare next IF if we go up and start well. Mr Banks, Zone 3 Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 I don't do many aways these days, I can't be doing with some of the balloonery, but I've done many long distance aways in the past where Latics fans can't have been in more than double figures... Cambridge United in 1982, Plymouth in 1987 and Portsmouth a year or so earlier spring to mind. Plus I was there when we won our last silverware, on the Isle of Man Quote
BradKnowles1 Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Over the last 18 years I’ve done a lot of games away. i don’t agree with a membership system as long as you are a season ticket holder you should all be given a fair chance to get a ticket. Most of the time if you want to go you will get a ticket Quote

Warne smashed one in off Liddell's arse if I remember correctly. Rocastle did have a blinder. Richie was in with the away end. Then we went on to lose four in a row .. 1 Quote
BerlinBlue Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 I remember going to Bournemouth away in Feb 2005, we lost 4-0, don't think there were too many there that day... but probably more in attendance than there should've been! Quote
Worcester Owl Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 I remember an away game v Chelsea in the 1980s where we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and here's the embarrassing bit - it happened twice and I can't remember which game it was! 1982 we drew 2-2 with goals from Heaton and Wylde, attendance 8,938 (at Stamford Bridge!). 1989 we drew 2-2 with goals from Ritchie and Palmer, crowd was 13,261. That was a better comeback as Chelsea were Div 2 champions by a mile that season. I know I was in the Shed end with my Chelsea supporting brother in law, who was pretty miffed that we came back from 2-0 down. I do remember that at the far end, which was open terrace at the time, there were what looked to be no more than a dozen Latics in a wire cage, going bananas when we equalised. I'm sure there would have been more than that though, my memory is playing tricks on me. It's even possible I went to both games as I worked in London throughout the 80s and he's still my brother in law! Quote
