Yep, that would be a blow. The weak link according to a lot, but for me he does a good job of breaking up play and keeping things simple, allowing others to play their games in more forward positions.

I’d be giving Wigan a call and asking for Payne back. He’d do a job alongside Clucas, and still not even featuring on the bench for them.

Good shout.

Some disturbing entitlement becoming evident here. Injury to a crucial player? No problem, Frank will just write a cheque...

Oh come on…. We are suggesting a player like Payne on loan. Who is on his 1st professional contract at Wigan and will be on peanuts. Add to the fact we probably wouldn’t pay all his wages as per how loans usually work (appreciated that each loan could be different). It’s a very cheap, low risk option and as per numerous sources we are actually looking to strengthen in January anyway with 2 or 3 signings. We’d have probably continued renewing his month to month loan if Wigan hadn’t recalled him.

I don’t see that entitlement in this thread…🤔

Principle rather than specifics. Let's not forget where we've come from. I'll guarantee that if we don't sign a replacement then someone on here will be berating the club's management

Of course they will Dave, it's the nature of the beast.

I wouldn’t go that far, but I do think the automatic assumption that he needs replacing when we have very good options in the current squad is a little premature.

Let's wait and see we know nothing yet about what's happened to Conlon.

From what I saw of Payne he looks an OK box to box player but he's inexperienced and I'm not sure he offers us what Conlon does, we would be asking a 19 year old lad to step into the shoes of the club captain. I actually think Dan Gardner would be a better replacement but keeping him fit is always the issue here.

If Conlon is injured for a long period of time (and we know nothing yet) then this is a bigger blow than some people are currently seeing.

Entitlement? A couple of people have suggested loaning a player... we've already loaned this season. Where on earth is the entitlement?

. . and yet no one can define what a big blow means?

Does it mean we’re out of the title race? (I think we’re short of this with or without him)

Does it mean we won’t make the playoffs.

Does it mean he’s the difference between winning and losing?

I’m not suggesting he hasn’t played his part, but people waxed lyrical about Payne. We covered him seamlessly. People worried about Rags, Sutton has done a great job as cover. Norwood didn’t play at the start of the season, Mikey did a fantastic job. Kitching didn’t start, Caprice did a good job as cover.

People are coming as across as though he is the difference and absolutely vital to our success. I don’t think he is, and like many others cover will be found and we’ll be fine for the playoffs.

Two weeks ago there was much comment that it would be our depth of squad that would see us right but now we seem to have one injury and we have to go shopping. Not saying we shouldn't do so, not my call!, but not right to just expect it.

I don't think people suggesting we loan back a young player we've already had on loan this season who won't be on big wages is really "entitled", is it?

As I said, principle rather than specifics.

Going by that principle every set of football fans on the planet is entitled then 😂

It's probably not an unfair conclusion!

If we don't go shopping now then when the heck are we going to get Christmas puddings at 50% off?

He mops everything up, works well with Clucs and he's our captain....he will be a big loss.

Looking at this positively, drop Clucs back, bring in Gardner or Chars with Lundy and it may work better and have a bigger goal threat.

Shortening Clucas to Clucs isn’t really worth it is it
