  1. Brett Omerod off back to PNE with a broken toe, presumably to never play for us again.

Not sure what Brett's total time on the pitch was, but not much and did little in that time to make an impression.

Anyway it got me thinking of other players who have had brief uninspiring times at our club and which is your 'favourite'.

Rob Lee - saw him in a LDV game, looked decent. Never saw him again. But for me the winner would be Mike Fillery - always seemed to be a good player and signed by Royle to bolster our promotion chasing team. Made debut at Boothferry park, played 13 minutes - got injured and never played again.

Any memories of short Latics careers?

Mike Fillery also played in an end of season game against Notts County, April 1991ish.

  2. Reading the post bellow about the possible postponement of tomorrow's match made me wonder how many abandoned games the Latics have been involved in.

I was at Stoke in the late '70's when the FA Cup match was called off at half time and I seem to remember a LDV/ZDS (?) cup match against the same team suffered floodlight failure a few years ago. Have there been any more?

Remember viewing the Stoke game on Kick Off; 2 down at half time, game abandoned, we go on and win the rescheduled game 1-0

March 1997 v Charlton game is postponed due to fog, we then go down 2-1 as Kinsella, I think, scores a last minute goal. This effectively seals our relegation

January 1986 Orient in the Cup is postponed despite a plastic pitch, Tony Henry refuses to play in the rescheduled game and we lose to the 4th Division side

October 1987; 7 Oaks become 6, Michael Fish becomes a national joke and yuppies s*** themselves as the London Stock Exchange collapses. Coincidentally the roof blows off the Chaddy and Athletic's Friday night game is cancelled :o

1994; Several games v Tottenham are called off, eventually played in the last week of the season, we are knackered, dispirited and injured, we lose and are down :disappointed:

1979; Eventually the Leicester game is on and Youngy scores 3 :D He is later transferred to the Filbert Foxes for half his real value

  3. I have had "Brief encounters" with Keith Hicks, John Platt, Andy Ritchie, Andy Barlow, Earl Barrett, Gunnar Halle, Craig Fleming and Lee Duxbury.

I found all really pleasant and willing to share some time.

Less keen on the surly Darren Beckford and the "I am gorgeous Nicky Banger"

So which players have you met and who has left the most/least impression ?

Did anyone ever meet our 70's stars; Young, Garwood, Stainrod, Chapman, Whittle, McVitie, Wyde etc. etc.

    Very interested ?

  4. Following on from the Craig Davies debacle this week, it got me thinking of other moments of madness committed by Latics players in days of yore. I'll wager Darren Sheridan has a book full of them.

    Anyone recall any notable ones?

I remember Paul Warhurst seeing red and snotting a Charlton player in a midweeker down at Selhurst Park.

Also, Wayne Andrews' last appearance in a Latics shirt... kicking a QPR player up the arse in a show of petulance after going a goal down in thye play-off semi. I can relate to that, I wanted to run on the pitch and kick someone then!

Jonny Hallworth playing in a testimonial with a broken hand. Didn't want to tell JR. how it happened

    Andy Gorton firebombing pubs

JR and Soz throwing water at a photographer at Selhurst Park.

Simon Stainrod going down like a ton of bricks against Wednesday which prompted a riot :o

Doug Hodgson snotting a Palace player in the tunnel live on Sky

A kid pulling the original Chaddy's head off, I think against Middlesbrough, the woman inside the costume storming off up the tunnel. It was hilarious

Graeme Sharp telling the lino to F*** Off on his return to Goodison and getting red carded. The only passion he showed in 5 and a half years at the club.

Rick Holden pushing over Lee Dixon in his home debut after re-signing. Unfortunate to get red carded but a silly thing to do.

Alan Young's celebration infront of Frizzell after scoring for Leicester. Totally unnecessary

Tommy Wright's decision to join Leicester, a much bigger club

The whole team and manager for throwing the game against Shrewsbury in '87 which effectively cost us promotion. Linked to Andy Linighan's backpass against WBA from the same season. :disappointed::disappointed:

Derek Parker throwing his shirt at JR after being substituted at Ninian Park; end of Latics career

Ron Futcher breaking the Reading captain's cheekbone at Elm Park in '86. JR was years ahead of Wenger when he claimed "Not to have seen the incident." <_<

JR's oft "Moments of Madness" with money to spend

Brian Kilkline believing he was quicker than Earl Barrett, ending up playing full back against Sheffield United

Matthew's Tipton's goal celebrations and lunge at their centre-half against Hednesford, never mind mad...more pocessed

  5. "They reached the playoffs last year and manage to muster up 16k ..."

In similar circumstances how many would Athletic take to Wembley ?

Answer; Only slightly more than the other lower division satellite towns of Manchester; Rochdale, Bury, Stockport and pre Dave Whelan Wigan.

However, you miss the point which is the criticism or the "Lording it" over Rochdale regarding their support, this is of course an irrelevance. The worst thing Latics fans can do is ape the "Massive club us" mentality of Leeds, Man U and even QPR from the Dowie Play-Off Season.

Most, if not all, lower division clubs deserve greater support. However, I feel we should rally against the Premier League, Sky, Voting Rights rather than sneering at our near neighbours.

  6. After there playoff success its got to be said that there support is pathetic .. as mentioned by some on there board.

Can't be doing with this "Let's Lord It Over Rochdale" attitude, very much smacks of Manchester United fans !

Given their 35 years in the 4th Division, proximity to Manchester, even Blackburn I would expect modest support.

Give their 2.5-3k support nothing more than respect.

  7. He was playing up front in the highlights I've just watched.

    Not quite a legend !

AR wanted to sign him in the close season of '99, I think, but was refused international clearance.

Also came with his mate whose name escapes me.

    Was/Is a forward.

I definetly remember a picture of these two West Indians footballers standing with the manager, umbrella aloft, looking round a sodden Boundary Park.

  8. "I can remember seeing Al*n Y*ung playing for Scotland schoolboys against England at O*d Tr*fford in the early '70's. And, Steve Edwards playing for England schoolboys around the same time."

    As quoted by Tai.......................................

Alan Young was my favourite player as a nipper. When did he break into the first team, 75ish ?

  9. You haven't watched much Masters football then? From what other clubs manage to turn out you should be thankful it's not a case of, "Good god, I'd forgotten David Miskelly played at centre forward for us in 1998."

No I have not watched much Masters Football, no real interest in it, rather like Euro 2008 !

Did Philliskirk represent the club more times than Miskelly ?

  10. at the end of the day his destiny is in hiw own hands so to speak...

if by christmas we are top of the league and he is scoring a goal every two games....yes other clubs would look at him.....but you would hope that he decides to stay and take us up,then he will be a championship player again...but with us...

if by some unfortunate event we are nowhere near the top 5 and he isnt scoring as often as he or us want, then he wont have any clubs coming in for him...

if he performs the choice is simple, stay and take us up and repay the faith shown to him by the club or the fans,or decide to jump ship for either a championship team or like has been said,a struggling team like leeds.lol

    Hope you are right.

Has anyone actually met Lee ? What is he like (seems a decent fella to me).

  11. In a seperate post KLatics4Ever talks about journeys to Greenock to watch Latics in the Anglo Scottish Cup, 78ish.

Anybody else travelled to these far- flung places (St. Mirren is another) in what must surely has been a tiny but quality support.

Personally remember Burnley stuffing us in the home leg of the Final, did anybody bother turning up for the return leg which ironically we won.

    Very, very interested.

  12. GROUNDS VISITED WATCHING LATICS,IT'S ALWAYS BEEN AN AMBITION TO WATCH
