  1. Having not been to a friendly yet so I'm just throwing a question in. Is it because we don't have any wide players who can put in a quality cross and we are relying on CMs packing the midfield? I was under the impression from people on here that the forwards we brought in were going to get plenty of goals but recent posts, seem to suggest a lack of quality in both attacking midfield and forwards.

seems like it, don't see why we're not trying the academy players (Byrnes and Knight) over the cm only midfield, seeing as they're both wide players.

Still in the market for a few wingers mind you so it could all turn when the team isn't patchwork.

  2.

Possibly but from what I've read Knight and Byrnes are wingers and he brought them on upfront initially rather than on the wing. Although that could have been because we only had one striker on the bench.

From what I've been told Knight was a striker but was moved on the wing in the youth system and Byrnes played as an attacking midfielder but was moved out wide also. Could be that Robbo wanted to see if Knight was still a striker.

  3. Only a friendly so means very little but....

Ripley - looks decent. One mistake first half which he immediately recovered from to make a good save

Law - impressed. Bigger & more of a presence than the type of fullbacks we've gotten used to of late. We were told he's a set piece specialist and he went close with a free kick. He should be good for 5 goals+ from these over the season I'd say.

Reckord - again bigger than I thought he was going to be. A steady job, did little wrong that springs to mind

Edmundson - I liked what we saw of him at RB back end of last season and he could be much further along than we were expecting on todays showing at CB. Commanding in the air, won 3 headers impressively in about 10 seconds at one point during the second half.

Vocal too - telling the much older, more experienced Law where to be on several occassions.

Only a friendly but he could well be ready....

Stott - CB. looked OK. Can't imagine Robinson is planning for us to see much of him if Clarke and Burgess come in but if he's needed there's definitely somthing there.

Wilson - played at CB. a solid captains performance. I've never noticed him be so vocal before (it was quiet I suppose).

Flynn - decent first half. Tidy, all round midfielder. Not as noticeable before he went off 2nd half with Hudds coming out on the front foot. Imagine, as expected, he'll be one of our best players this season.

Klok - exactly what we expected. He'll be great between suspensions.

Winchester - I thought he'd filled out in a good way early on but he was goosed way too early. Did little. Gonna be a great shame if he wastes his talent.

Erwin - put himself about, good touch. Looks the kind of player we thought Cassidy was on his first game & a half before injury last season.

Mckay - lively, linked play well. Very optimistic he'll be the goalscorer we've been missing since Baxter.

Nabi - the lad released from West Brom. Looked awful to start with and nobody was passing to him but knuckled down and grew into the game. Worth another look in my opinion.

Croft - I thought he did well when finally called upon back end of last season and he was very good again today. Pushed Edmundson for man of the match from the subs bench. Provided he's not after too much money sign him back up ffs.

Cassidy - I always think criticism of him is a bit OTT as he's never had enough of a run for us to properly judge. If Robinson isn't going to ever start him either we might aswell just get rid. I can't think of a player who's had so little impact from so many substitute appearances.

Brown - great lad, terrible footballer. We were defending very well at 0-0 v Championship opposition until he came on. Within minutes his man created their first. He was shocking.

Kettings - I thought this was our poorest signing so far but he did OK.

Mantack, Woodland, Byrnes & Knight weren't really on long enough to give an opinion.

All in all a decent run out.

What was most promising of all was how organised SR has us looking already after the players being here such a short amount of time.....

If the four we're rumoured to be signing on Monday are all first team starters things could be looking very promising.

Personally thought Byrnes played well despite being out of position. Mantack looked fairly decent but there was a few times where he looked like he was playing to impress the gaffer and not to win the game and he looked like a full back and not a wing back. Would love to see how they both fair in position for a decent length of time.

  4. As it stands we can just about turn out a team...5-3-2

    Gk..O'Neill (youth)

    Rb..Mantack

    Cb..Edmundson

    Cb..Stott

    Cb..Wilson

    Lb..Brown

    Mf..Knight

    Mf..Winchester

    Mf..Byrnes

    St..Cassidy

    St..Glackin (youth)

    Subs..All youth.

Doesn't look too bad ...does it?

Awful lot of faith to place in Glackin, playing him at lone striker.

  5. I'm all for clearing the decks but arguably 3 of last season's poorest performers are still on the books along with another who was a major disappointment, of those remaining only really Edmondson has shown anything the rest are gash or untried.

Seeing how Edmundson and a few other of the untested players develop next season is one of the few positives we've got to look forward to. Can't imagine they'll develop much unless we get a full 11 though.
