Anyone who supported the Latics in the early 1970s is unlikely to ever forget Jim Fryatt; a barrel-chested, balding centre-forward with Dickensian sideboards and an intermittent penchant for a drooping moustache.

Athletic's captain in the Final of the Littlewoods Cup at Wembley in April 1990 earned his first one-year professional contract at the age of 18, with part of his wages being paid by the European Social Fund and Greater Manchester Council. Mike Milligan along with another reserve-team player Brian Marriot, boosted Athletic's list of professionals to 21, thanks to the money from the EEC. Athletic were the first sports club to apply for the grant, and it certainly paved the way for a permanent career for Milligan, although centre-half Brian Marriot failed to graduate at senior level at Boundary Park.

R.I.P Bert Lister, a true legend

  7. Me too. On the condition that I get a go up front and the young'uns actually do their share of the running this time! Watching me and S_W have heart attacks may be fun for them... but loosing to southerners won't be!!

i am one of them young players who play on sundays, and i say we did do a lot of the running

we are on every sunday no fail playing footy

im the one of the smallest ones called jimmy who usually plays right back

  8. i dont know why everyone is slating pogs to be honest though, yes i agree, crossley would be my number one, but in all the games pogs was in last season, he only played bad once!! people are seeming to forget that, and when he got dropped and david blain was put in net, we looked shambolic!

i agree pogs still holds the record for having the most clean sheets in a season at the club, he loves the club, and i reckon will be one of the best back up keepers in division and playin in rserve football will build his confidence for when he is needed when crossley is unavailable

  9. Allotts been bought cos Johnny boy rates him highly as a midfielder not just for the fun of it so i'm sure he will be one of his first central midfield names on the sheet, which makes the rest interesting, someones missing out if we take it Kilkenny is going to be the creative heart should he come. There would have to be some shuffling around.

i have a real feeling that shez could go to the 3-5-2 formation, becuase he did say start of last season he enjoyed working with that formation at reserve level

but who woould play where is the question?

    crossley- in net obviously

thompson, gregan, stam - the centre backs

eardley and taylor - the wing backs

allott, gary mac, and kalala - the 3 centre midfielders

and upfront at first i would play ricketts and davies because hughes has been out of the game for a while, so give him a few reserve games first

back to the kilkenny debate it would bring more competition for places and i feel it would be a brilliant signing

but the question is, is it just a rumour or is he on shezas list

  10. I've voted mid-table; the league looks tougher than last year and teams sometimes seem to struggle after missing out on the play offs the previous year. Tranmere and Hartlepool are examples of this recently. The lack of a creative midfield player and a left back also worry me a bit but a couple more good signings in these area's between now and August could see me wanting to re-vote.

i was thinking that shez will sort something out, i just think we need a left winger and a left back and we are sorted

about the whole creative midfield thing, kalala can get the ball and play it simple that is all you need, and allott can pass aswell, gary mac is basically going to score some goals for us andi am hoping neil wood can forget his injury because he is only 23/24 and he is a brilliant passer of the ball, he is like a richie wellens but left footed
