How will stats bombs discover a young prospect at lower level, he will hardly  have any?

Scouting isn't always about targets, I've often been sent watch players and found  better in the same  team and the opposition.

And I am sure the same applies to our scouts. Indeed all scouts.

We’ve had exactly that with stats bomb, and Mellon doesn’t like it, because he knows what good looks like. . and he doesn’t want to choose from a computer generated list of targets. I’ll be staggered if another incarnation of data contributing recruitment is wanted or sanctioned

Not saying I like it, just that many clubs, including some at our level, use this method.

    Very much a data man.

Doubtful. He says he has increasing work commitments, involving more overseas trips, and wants to spend his limited spare time with his young family.

His record at Alty does suggest, though, that data can have a big role in recruitment if harnessed correctly.

weve just binned off about eight players, there is no cull and plenty of wriggle room. three youth players on £150 pw isnt going to dent anybody's budget, let alone a big club with 7000+ average crowds.

Even after releasing players we still had 19 under contract, plus the 3 young pros now added. There will need to be departures and names like Norman, Shelton, Sheron and Hogan have, we are told, been advised to look elsewhere.  That still leaves the likes of Willoughby and Nuttall who didn't figure in plans.

So yes, there will be a cull and no, the young pros will not be on only £150.

And we don't average 7,000+. Not yet anyway.

I've contacted the club that 24yo Colwyn Bay right back Alex Downes has ended his contract.

Hes 6ft, tough, powerful with pace and determination who can defend and bomb forward, sending over devastating crosses and score goals. Can't ask for much more at our level and he would be on a modest wage.

The NL nor the EFL would hold any fears for him. So hope we can make an approach.

You would think that Gary Brabin, as sporting director of TNS, has see plenty of Downes.

Wonder if he is the sort to have a look at in pre-season games.

DR says the budget remains the same for the upcoming season and incomings don't necessarily rely on any outgoings. So, who is telling porkies? Mellon or Royle?

    Possibly neither.

We have 18/19 players under contract so presuming the squad will be about 23/24 then DR is right that there could still be incoming.

If, as MM suggests, "major surgery"  is needed, then that implies that considerable outgoings are needed to create more room.

Either way you don't want to be indicating to rivals that you are desperate to move players on cos you are skint.

I suspect that the board have decided to go for it again and will back the manager to wheel and deal - within limits.

Stability in the playing squad is not an end in itself.

Not changing personnel because of a belief that stability will achieve the end sought is the act of a mad man

Stability comes when the bulk of the squad is deemed to be at the required level of ability and reliability. MM has already made it known that quite a few of the present squad are not at that level so changes in personnel are inevitable.

Seems like 'Specialist' is the new term for 'Good at football'.

    🤣

    Well yeah.

When MM mentioned specialists I got the impression he was on about a genuine RB and DM instead of shoehorning CB's in there. Also, ball-playing CM rather than merely a runner. Oh, and genuine wingers- or wide midfielders to use the new term!

Suppose it's all about how he wants to set up, who is available and how much deadwood he can shift. Should be a fun summer!

Jeff king released by chesterfield says he’s a full back

    MEN confirm Madden to chesterfield

If MM wants "specialists" in certain areas then I don't think King fits the RB bill.

Pete Wild signed him as a winger for Halifax and converted him to RWB. Good going forward but not as good defensively.  Could see him doing OK with a proper RB behind him or if MM'S plan is to go gung-ho and simply outscore the opposition - which I  somehow doubt.

We actually don't run around alot at all if anything we are very static team which doesn't press and gets regularly out ran in games although I do take your point about players needing to be able to do abit more than just run.

For the record Ollie Banks is far better than any of our midfielders and he's someone who got way more grief than he deserved while here.

Agree about the need for an aggressive press. Too many opponents knocking it around at the back against a half-hearted  attempt.

I  remember being at Hartlepool when Josh Stones badgered the life out of their defence, won back possession and set up Norwood for a goal.  A few like him would do nicely.

Yes but he got stick because he was a lazy bastard not because he lacked ability.

Very similar to most of our current squad.

We have quite a few players who run around a lot. Doesn't mean they are any good.

Serial winners Micky Mellon and Paul Cook both included him in promotion winning squads.

If a tenth of that is put into the squad budget on top of normal funding then Barnet will be a big player next season.  Chances are they will be anyway.

    Indeed.

Think I  may have been the kiss of death for us and Barnet this season. Backed us at 9-2 and Barnet at 9-1 to be promoted.

At one stage I  had dreams of a play-off final where I  couldn't lose, financially. Then it all went tits up. Ah well, there's always next time.

Only reply to that was someone saying they didn't think any out of contract players would be getting new deals.

Jeff King's the obvious one, given our glaring RB omission. Wouldn't mind Joe Quigley. Can you imagine the sheer hysterical piss boiling if we brought in Ollie Banks?

Never understood the bizarre reaction of some of our fans to ex players. It didn't work out here for Banks but he quickly got some stick (and his dad) making it hard to settle - sounds familiar with some of our current crop!

He has twice won promotion from the National League and once from League 2. Who's laughing now?
