  1. How can he cringe. That is what he was. Fair enough, he has got his Pro Licence.

He has no Club manager experience.

He has no Reserve Team Manager level experience.

He has no reserve Team coaching experience

    He is not TP's level.

The next level down at Latics is Simon Cooper as Head of Academy Youth Phase Development

The level after that is Peter Wild Academy Youth Phase Coach. A coach. Most Latics fans have never heard of him. No criticism of Peter, I would not know the first thing about him

He was this level at York, and then moved to Sunderland. He started at the beginning of February. It is entirely feasible he did not make his probationary period at Sunderland and started his application. We know hardly any due diligence was done.

So he has been promoted 5 levels in one hit. It's a massive, massive gamble.

These are the facts. He might work, we all want it to work, I really, really want it to work.

But lets not kid ourselves it is not what it is.

He wasn't an u9 coach though, And while I agree he is not at TPs level, he is no where near the level of Simon or Peter (not a dig). Neither of them have had a professional playing career as far as I know and niether of them has the Pro License which however you want to degrade it IS a big thing in todays modern game.

  2. Paw4- big diff from those you mention and Kelky is experience. Nearly all were full internationals with loss of top class games under their belt. Frizz was a long term Latics player. Johnson had a fine pedigree. Kelly has had precious little playing experience and only managed U9 team for a few months. Nowt wrong with inexperienced managers as long as they have earned respect by virtue of their careers.

Depends what experience you are talking about, as they all arguably had more experience an pro football, but Kelly has alot more coaching experience than most of them had when they were appointed. He must cringe when he is described as an u9 coach, sounds like a bleedin kids local park soccer school! He was a Youth Phase Development coach that worked with all ages up to u16's, (however at York he 'assisted' with the u9s).

  3. I'm cautious because Kelly has no standing or reputation within the professional game. That said, most people are bored with the carousel that is football management. It's the same names and the same links.

We have had some relative short-term success with rookie managers. We have given John Sheridan, Paul Dickov and Lee Johnson their first managerial positions.

It is evident Kelly impressed Corney in a unique way. He has no credentials in terms of his playing career, therefore no contact structure. He has minimal coaching experience, yet possesses coaching qualifications most young, if not older, managers in the Football League do not. He's clearly interested and I have a gut feeling he has some fresh concepts and ideas.

The lad is entitled to support a moderate political party.

I dont get why people keep saying he has no connections, to get the Uefa 'a' license takes two years, and the Pro License takes another 18 months. You are on the course with the same 'students' throughout, most of these coaches are either top well known names or coches and academy coches at EPL anf FL clubs. He would have struck up quite a few contacts over that time.

  4. Same risk with any appointment? Really? No there isn't. There is significantly more risk with someone that has zero management experience, no connections and a poor playing career. The licenses aren't difficult, dont believe what you hear.

So which of our previous managers who had prvious experience did well? How do you no he has no connections? Poor playing career means bugger all. Badges aren't difficult? No they aren't if you are a good coach, to even get on the Pro License you have to be invited. He is not some sunday pub team manager, yes he lacks the experience at this level but so have coutless others who have gone on to do well. Like i've already said, he could turn out to be :censored:, but so could Dowie.

  5. Some yes votes suddenly appear. Latics Staff had a text? Nobody owning up to them though...

I clicked yes. Why? Because the question was, are you in favour of DK being appointed? It doesn't mean he was my first choice, but i'm willing to give him a chance. Gaining your Pro License is no mean feat, especially with him being an 'unknown' name. Now he could turn out to be :censored:, but equally could be a great find, but its the same risk with any appointment.

  6. The 100 club

    -Enterance via VIP reception

-guaranteed access to the 1895 suite pre match

    -match day programme

    -executive seat

-exclusive use of the 1895 suite at half time

Sounds good, do we know how many of these are available?

  7. I am not sure I agree with the quality of referring is getting worse agrument.

They are human beings who do a pretty good job overall. Perhaps things that have changed that impact the perceived** quality of performances include:

    1) The pace of the game has increased due to player fitness and pitch quality. Its arguable that this pace makes it more difficult for a human being to keep up as much as in the past.

    2) The level of 'cheating' that goes on has increased. Generally now a referree has to content with 22 players all trying to con them at every opportunity (just watch the hands shoot up for throw-ins corners that they know are not theirs)

    3) The level of scrutiny we can now see - even 3rd Division incidents are shown on TV, on highlights packages etc etc. Mistakes have always been made, we just now can see it for certain.

For me football is an entertainment industry and sometimes having a slightly dodgey referee decision can ingnite an otherwise boring game. Also having the 'we was robbed' discussions in the pubs / offices after games is part of the game for me. Also we all remember the bad decisions that go against us, but rarely remember the ones that go for you (for example watch the goals from the 'Great Escape' game against Southampton and be glad the ref didn't give the hand ball that could have changed the game).

** I say percieved as on a few occasions I have been to watch a game of another team with friends. And sat as a neutral in a home crowd, you realise how biased your view of football games are when it involves your team.

    Great post.

I took up the whistle because I had that menatlity of 'surely it cant be that hard' so put my money where my mouth is and did the course. Needless to say its very rare now that I have anything bad to say about officials.

  8. from footballforums:

Liam Kelly is a very gifted player who is very good technically and covers a lot of ground. My only problem is lack of goals..... sounding like a like-for-like swap although we probably gave you some cash.

Liam had a bad injury and we've been waiting for him to get a look in since. Capable at Championship level so at our level I think he'll be a decent enough signing for you. I always rated LJ in midfield (unlike many City fans) and I would say he knows how to spot a decent midfield player.

A good move for both players and both clubs I would say. New start will give them both fresh impetus.

  9. I'm with the OP on this, Bias is expected, but Roy takes it to a different level and ruins it. Not only that but he is clueless to the laws of the game, but constantly has a go at the referee without knowing why! I end up tuning into the away commentary because it is nearly ALWAYS better. Im paying for a service so i have the right to moan!
