Anyone remember buying records off Ma Dobbs from that era? well known for giving you more change than she should have because they were so expensive.

Yes, that brings back memories. I got most of my 1960’s 7” singles from her stall.

Edwards was mainly a reserve team player at Man Utd, but he did have a decent run for a few months in the first team at the end of the Busby era and during the brief reign of Wilf McGuinness circa 1969-70. And yes, Ian Ure was at United 1969-71, so he would have been partnered by Edwards for a fair bit of that period. If you watch some of those games closely, you can see why Edwards never quite made the grade in the top flight - he was good in the air and a decent tackler, but his positional play wasn't great and his distribution could be dreadful.

He dropped out of contention when O'Farrell became manager in 1971, and clearly had no place in Tommy Docherty's plans either, being sold to Latics soon after The Doc arrived at Old Trafford in 1972-73. As mentioned earlier, he had an excellent goalscoring record initially for us, and I have the feeling that he could have been converted into a serviceable centre-forward, as was also the case with Ian Wood.

Ian Wood was the other way around, from centre forward to full back.

Ah yes, Humble Pie with the excellent Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton. I seem to remember that they only had one hit though.

Hit was Natural Born Boogie but they made some great albums both in the studio and especially live.

IIRC Reg Blore was one of the players that came with the first flush of spending when Ken Bates took over the club.  I think others could have been Bill Asprey, Ian Towers. Albert Quixall and the manager Jimmy Mcilroy himself.

At one point we had about 7 expensive new signings in and around the team - with no immediate success. 🙂

Reg was popular,  he always looked like he was bursting out of his skin, every fan likes to see someone working for the team.

    .

Albert Quixall was earlier. I believe it was Denis Stevens and Ken Knighton

Great footballer. His class shone through the few times he played for us. Can remember one match we were winning fairly easily and he dribbled round a couple of defenders, was about to do the same to the goalie in front of the Chaddy and the ref blew for time !

Was instrumental in the change to "electric orange" and an influx of Northern Irish youngsters, some of whom were better than others. Ronnie Blair, Allen Hunter, Derek Spence and one who I believe would have been really good barring a badly broken leg Billy Johnston. Can remember watching him limping through reserve matches during his failed comeback bid thinking I'd been cheated out of watching a potentially great player. His and Bates' arrival kick-started my real love of Latics and led to watching us play some great attacking football, winning the Ford Sporting League and eventually gaining promotion.
