  1. Quoted today, but no mention of Latics.....

PLAYING DAYS NEARLY AT END SAYS SCHOLES

SUPPORTING ROLE: Scholes is used sparingly now

    Wednesday February 4,2009

    By Richard Tanner

PAUL SCHOLES accepts that after 13 years as the fulcrum of Manchester United’s midfield, he is no longer first choice.

And with his 35th birthday coming up in November, Scholes has hinted that next season could be the last of his career, admitting “the end isn’t far away”.

Since returning from a knee operation at the beginning of December, Scholes has been used sparingly by Sir Alex Ferguson.

He has started only five of United’s last 17 games with Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs, Anderson and Darron Gibson all competing for places in the engine room.

  2. Transfers - Gossip Shop: Scholesy's waddle to Oldham

    Eurosport - Wed, 04 Feb 12:38:00 2009

As the picturesque snowstorms of Monday turn in to the icy pavements and grey gutter slush of Wednesday, so Monday's bright-eyed and optimistic transfer talk turns to bitterness, recrimination and ridicule.

Early Doors: Dreams can come true

But there's plenty of time for the bitterness later. First, let's get things going with a fresh snowfall that's targeted on Manchester - and for once, it's the red half of the city.

United's uber-midfielder Paul Scholes has been one of Alex Ferguson's great warhorses, a 400-plus appearance colossus who first turned up at the club to start training as a callow 14-year-old.

Now, an incredible 20 years later, Scholesy has eight Premier League medals framed on his mantelpiece - not to mention a dozen or so other assorted medals, certificates and commemorative T-shirts from various successful Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup campaigns.

But the world's most famous ginger footballer has admitted that the time is fast approaching when he'll pull on the Red Devils shirt for the last time.

"The end isn't far away," he told the Daily Express. "Times have changed in terms of not playing as often as I would like."

He'll see out the season, of course. Fergie has used the experience that he, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville have with great, if sparing, aplomb this term - but with 18 months left on his contract, the summer will be the perfect time for him to take on one last challenge before he retires to the Algarve to improve his golf.

And what better challenge than a move to Oldham Athletic? It's the club who he supported as a boy, and a team who are currently pushing for a play-off berth in League One. It'd be reminiscent of Chris Waddle's brief but memorable tour of duty with Bradford at the age of 36.

Scholes admitted in December that he's got no more than a couple of years left. His decision is whether to spend them sitting on the bench at Old Trafford or making one last set of memorable footprints, this time on a different piece of turf.

  3. I wonder if this could be an omen.........

Martyn, who was born in Surrey but raised in Glasgow, recently received an OBE in the New Year's Honours for his contribution to music. He died in hospital in Ireland, where he had been living in Kilkenny in recent years

    Spooky !

  4. Seagulls poised for double transfer swoop

Albion are interested in Leeds midfielder Neil Kilkenny and his former Oldham team-mate, striker Craig Davies.

Kilkenny, 23, played in the Premier League during four years at Birmingham.

He also had two loan spells at Oldham before joining Leeds a year ago for £150,000 on a three and a half-year contract.

He has made 21 appearances for them this season, including the 3-1 victory over Albion at Elland Road, but has not featured since Simon Grayson replaced Gary McAllister as manager.

Kilkenny has represented Australia both at senior and under 23 level, having moved from Enfield to Brisbane with his family when he was a child.

Davies, also 23, has slipped down the pecking order at Boundary Park since a £50,000 move from Italian club Verona 18 months ago.

He scored six goals in 13 games on loan to League One rivals Stockport this season but was not in the squad for Oldham's defeat at Scunthorpe on Tuesday.

Contrary to reports, Albion's interest in Davies is not expected to signal the departure of injured joint leading marksman Glenn Murray, although two other strikers are on their way out of the club.

Youngster Sam Gargan is joining Eastbourne Borough on loan, while The Argus reported yesterday that Aldershot are heading the chase for Jake Robinson

  5. Hughes is definitely going, he's was told by Corney three weeks ago that we have to sell him. The only stumbling block is the price. Doncaster wouldn't raise their first offer of £200,000, they obviously feel they've got Latics over a barrell after the Porter fiasco. He's not happy about it but he's already in the process of renting his house out in preparation for the move.

  6. Left-back deal for Latics

    Reporter: TONY BUGBY

    Date online: 19/01/2009

ATHLETIC’S lengthy search for a left back is over after they completed the loan signing of Scott Golbourne from Championship club Reading today.

The 20-year-old former England youth international kicked off his career at Bristol City before joining the Royals in January, 2006

  7. I was speaking to Hughesey's next door neighbour last Saturday, told me that Doncaster have offered £200k and the club are demanding for £250k. This must include Byfield as the balance. The story was repeated to me today by someone who knows nothing about football but was in the pub with Hughes after the Hartlepool game. Neighbour told me that Corney has had Hughesey in and told him he has to go to balance the books, clearly with Porter in mind. Doncaster have told him they'll sort out transport for the first six months, then he'll have to move.

Hopefully Doncaster will refuse to stump up the extra £50k and Hughes & Windass will turn out to be the new Ritchie & Palmer. If the owners have any real ambition, which recent signings seem to indicate, then letting Hughes go at this point would be crazy. The clock's ticking and the omens aren't good, but hopefully things will turn out right in the end. Over to you Deano......................

  8. Our local MP and the Government "Floods Minister" (do we still have a Minister for Drought ?) compares the prospect of Norfolk flooding with Latics winning the European Cup. On the basis that everything the Government says is generally way off the mark, we could all be off to the continent in twelve months, and if you live in Norfolk you'd better get yourself a canoe !
