Well put Harry. To say people got excited when "Maurice" was stood over a free kick makes sense but when you can remember people getting excited because he had tossed his shin pads and rolled down his socks it sounds daft but it meant he was getting down to business and the next few minutes would be interesting with his charging runs. If he didnt get the ball he got the man. Rodger Wylde vastly underated player and a turning point for Latics. Bryceland, Garwood, Dowd, Fryatt, Shaw, McVitie, Ward, Quinn, Heaton, should all mean something to anyone calling themselves a Latics fan even if you never saw them play.

I could not give a care about the Premiership and the multi millionaire tossers that float about or the wanabees who con us like Simpson without turning up regularly. Latics for me is my football heritage and still have some compassion for a Bury or Stockport as they to are proper football clubs with fans who follow for the right reasons (even if those two are crap).

Our away following is a joy (wish I got to more games) and something to celebrate.

  2. At least 6in of fresh snow , midnight and its still snowing. Pitch will be perfect but the surrounds to the ground will be a nightmare. It needs to stop soon and the council to send in the snow ploughs to clear the car park and the surrounding roads and land if the game is to go ahead.

  3. Thanks for the insight but still retain my view. I agree with majority of your post about method of playing but the simple fact was that away from home Groves was not as effective . It would be interesting to research some of the performance marks from the papers of that era. The vast majority of 8 or 9's from Groves, would be from home games.

As for entertainers I agreed with your list but would add Bobby Johnstone and Billy Johnston.

Most naturally gifted player must be Bobby J.

Sad really, no real entertainers for nigh on 20 years yet we still turn up. And I'be just renewed my season ticket!0

  4. Groves was a great entertainer and a superb player but let's not get carried away. During the 70's for a period I hardly missed a match and whoever we played we always thought that we had a chance AT HOME. Away was another matter. Generally we were woeful unless we had a decent following. We just didn't travel well. If our following was small then some players, notably Groves were often absent in action. Sometimes he find'tw want to know. Yet the next game he would turn it on. Why else was he with us so long? Great memories from a special player who could have been so much better if he performed equally well home and away.

  5. yep - tried to get some tickets for Centenary stand earlier when OAFC sold out but online option finished last night - dont think this is anything to do with extra allocation tho. Think you can still get tickets by phone . Hope am wrong tho and extra allocation is available but doubt this is the reason. Will phone up 2moro but hope OL postcode dosnt prevent me getting them !

Why not have a day out in Liverpool tomorrow and go in person?

  6. This is way before my time but didn't 46,000 pack into BP to see a Bobby moore captained West Ham in the 60's

    About 20,000 less than that.

2-2. They scored from inside their own half, a hoof upfield that bounced over Bollands; head (our goalie) on the bone hard pitch. Match would have been called off these days.

West Ham team wore gloves much to our amusement. "Soft Southern ...." You can guess the rest.

Love to say great days but they were still a long way off

  7. Up to 68, regretably not all with Athletic.

Anyone done the full 92 ? If so how many games involving the Latics ?

87 all with Latics. I missed Accrington last season. Still need Aldershot, Dagenham, Barnet and Morecombe.
