  1. Why this obsession with paying players off? Tell them in no uncertain terms that even though they are under contract, they will not be part of the first team picture next season and they are welcome to go out on loan for the season or seek a permanent move away. Most footballers, despite what we may think, would probably prefer to be playing rather than sidelined doing nowt!

The last time we played them away in the league before the 3-3 game was the last game of the season in 1998. We won 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Rocket Ronnie Jepson. Grimsby went up via the playoffs a few weeks later.

  3. If I can bring this thread back on topic please, can you keep backing Thistlecrack please, Cue Card is drifting all the time and I want to maximise my returns - cheers :)

On a side note there's a couple of dogs I fancy today running at Perry Barr.

Let's see how my luck is pre Boxing Day.

    And today's lottery numbers are :applause1: ?

  4. With football being emotive like it is, I suppose I 'get' why people would have a grievance with Shez for leaving, but for me, even with the depressing nature of his departure, he has more than enough credit in the bank. He played for us for free, and even risked his health by coming out of retirement whilst approaching 40 with dodgy knees out of necessity by playing for us in the aftermath of that awful summer of 2003 (and was still an absolute class act, may I add!) and - granted, circumstances were different, but it was still a massive gamble - the records say we sacked him whilst being 4th (if memory serves) in the league back in 2009. Is 'loyalty' just a one way street? For better or worse, it certainly seems so with football.

All this grievance with badge kissing, chest thumping - I have no doubt whatsoever it reflects how he feels about us. You only have to look at his reaction after the Southend win that kept us up (seems so long ago now :disappointed:) I refuse to believe that this was the act of someone who, at the time, thought he'd be managing a different club come August. To fans of a certain era who missed the glory years (I myself only caught the fag end of it), he's as close to a legend as we have had in recent times. Perhaps this is what makes it so galling to some.

For someone who has given so much service & dedication to club as a player, youth coach, assistant & manager over 2 spells to want to walk away is a clear indication that something had gone drastically wrong between the time he was appointed & the time he left. I just can't accept the 'it was for more money' argument in isolation, and the mess that presided over the next 2 months with 4 (:censored:ing FOUR!!) contracted players etc just fuels the fire that something had gone massively south. Let's face it, as soon as that Season Ticket deal came out around Feb, alarm bells were ringing for a lot of people re our financial position.

What gets me most, is that if it was purely down to Shez leaving for more money as is mooted, is just the way the club seemingly bent over and accepted it. Clearly I'm not privy to the details of his contract, but it was widely believed to be a 2 year one - if Corney was that aggrieved, surely he could've played hardball, put him on gardening leave & hung him out to dry? Looked like he was pretty happy for him to move on without semblance of a fight, save for a contract offer we suddenly heard about at the 12th hour. I've never shuddered so much as when I read 'John goes with our blessing' - to a club in a lower division that was in a :censored:ing transfer embargo. What ambition we have.

Personally, would I have him back? In an absolute heartbeat, but unfortunately, with football being like it is, he's essentially now cut all ties with the club & I think he fully knew this when he signed for County.

    What a :censored:ing mess.

Great post (apart from the f bombs :sign0007: ). There's one other critical thing which you didn't mention. There was a quote from Corney when Sheridan left something along the lines of "I can't blame John for leaving, there's things going on behind the scenes - which I can't reveal - which John knows about"

  5. I'm not sure the "brand" is really worth a great deal in reality. Yes longstanding fans know us as being around forever, Joe Royle glory days (gallantly coming runners up to Everton in 1915) etc but if Fleetwood get to the Premier League fans won't be saying they've got no pedigree they will buy into it. For me the price of the brand is negated by the apathy and disillusionment the owners have created in recent years. I think it's largely a myth that United and City eat into our fan base, created by Corney sycophants who look for any excuse other than the blindingly obvious about why the club is on the brink...

  6.

just over 20% of our current home support - when you put it into that context it shows how far we've sunk really. It's clearly going to take a lot of convincing for the stay aways to come back - if ever they will. Almost 20,000 at Huddersfield today - jealous!

Make your mind up, according to our interaction on the other thread all the stayaways (such as myself) are staying away for trivial reasons, but now they need "a lot of convincing" to come back - which suggests the reasons they are staying away are not trivial! Yesterday's away following (less than 700) reminded me of the away game at Town which I think was 09/10 under Sheridan where not only did we batter them but I seem to recall we took well over 2000 as the away end was rammed. You can stick your head in the sand all you like and pooh pooh people's reasons for not going, but that away turnout yesterday was very poor and symptomatic of the club's demise under Corney.

  7.

Find it incredible that anyone would stop supporting their football club because a certain stand (or bar) has been demolished. I just can't get my head around that. It's like saying if we had built the new ground (wherever that may have ended up) you would simply stop supporting the club (i.e. because your favourite stand has now gone) - nope will never understand that rationale.

You don't seem to understand many things, however, I'm guessing you're more younger than older so will forgive your intransigence

  8.

Are you staying away because you think withdrawing your support (& the money you'd spend) might force Corney's hand or for another reason(s)?

Even when we were in the old second division for umpteen years, at the start of the season I always believed that the club genuinely wanted promotion - I don't anymore so for me it's a pointless (no pun intended although we have two now!) exercise attending including away games which I have enjoyed more for years being honest. Also, I keep hearing "support your club" but how can I when I know spending money at BP doesn't guarantee all of it going back into the football club. I do find the football generally poor to watch in this division - exciting games are few and far between. Plus I have been living in the East Midlands for the last ten years (I'm back temporarily in Uppermill now but will be buying somewhere local soon) so I could easily think of reasons of why a 4-5 hour round trip tp BP could be subsituted for something different. As alluded to earlier I've largely gone to away games these last few years doing more new southern grounds like your Crawleys, Cheltenhams, Colchesters, Stevenages etc

I'm not saying that's me done with Latics, but when you add in the other well documented reasons, I can't return until Corney is gone.

  9.

Or the stayaways what with them having stayed away in a very non fickle manner.

This is the issue - they won't be coming back! I've been a Latics fan for around 40 years and haven't been to a match the last two seasons, not because I'm fickle but because (for the umpteen reasons all well documented) I choose not to go again until Corney is gone and then, there will be a decision to be made. People who label the stayaways as fickle show incredible naivety. It would also be wrong to label everyone who still goes to BP as happy clappers. I fear for the club at the moment unless new owners are found quickly. We're nearing the point of no return.

  10. Incredible really - in what world is chants about "Pakis" not racist? It is true Asians will refer to themselves in that way - I clearly remember a lady doing so when I worked at Boots in Ashton-Under-Lyne in the late 80s. I found this sad, as indeed I do all so called "reclaiming" of words (Spurs/Yid-Black/Nigga) as it's not empowerment but a sad reflection of how difficult it is to beat prejudice. A little bit like when Ricky Gervaise was quite rightly taken to task by the mother of a Down's Syndrome child for using "mong" - a word like that will never change its meaning, and I despair when I see Latics fans write MK Mongs. I also find it repulsive how people now write that a footballer was "raped" by another player.

  11.

Was that the one when the ref thought he'd been hit by something and blood was dripping down, but it was the red sauce from a hot dog?

    Vialli was class.

Think ref was hit by a pie! Haven't googled it but recall it was Paul Durkin who I never rated and I think favoured them the whole game. Wasn't Steve Whitehall up front for us so Latics nil was nailed on :laught30: ? I agree Garnett had a stormer.

  12. Marshy had him in his pocket. He was a very good centre forward, but i agreed with Joe. I thought he could've been a superb centre half.

I agree. I think Marshall was a class centre half who could have gone on to have international recognition. Pity he fancied himself as a striker (like Warhurst) but hey, Latics legend and definitely one of my favourite ever players just below your Ritchies and Palmers.

The form of all teams really from Bury (15th) downwards is woeful - only Blackpool recording more than one win in their last five. So as you might expect the teams above Bury have lots of recent wins (Barnsley five out of five) and so the table is really split at 15th place as things stand. Colchester are all but gone, and so will we be unless we pick up another couple of wins soon.

  14. Back in 1948 Latics attempted to sign the Middlesbrough and England international Wilf Mannion, who was in dispute with his club. Mannion was one of British football’s all-time greats. Shareholders and supporters were asked to help raise part of the £25,000 asking price, and the ‘Mannion Fund’ was formed. Latics fans raised £1,500

Mannion was keen to join Latics and one of the Club’s directors fixed him up with a job in the area, to help until his dispute was settled and a deal between the clubs struck. That never happened and the transaction collapsed, leaving the question over returning the £1,500 to so many unknown donors. Consequently the cash was banked until the early 1950s, when it was handed over to a charity.

Apparently £25,000 in 1948 now worth £873,311.33. That made me think of an Ian Olney type sum (£750,000) but that was 1992 which is now worth £1,438,316.25. Our current squad has a combined value of......next to nowt !!

  15. We have the 2nd highest pitch in the country and get much harsher weather than most. We are after all on the edge of the pennines.

Third - West Brom and Port Vale.

I saw the Carlisle pitch on the TV last Sunday in the FA Cup tie with Everton. If you recall that was under water nearly up to the crossbars - and it looked bloody good to me. This club is scrimping in all areas and the results are there for all to see.
