I fancied Gateshead to go up, good footballing team, shows what can be achieved on a small budget with the right players and

I wonder where this leaves them for next season though. Assuming the position with the ground stays the same, who's going to want to play for a team who literally aren't playing for anything. I feel really sorry for their fans.

  2. I saw the game through the eyes of an outsider yesterday, as I took my mate to his first ever game at Boundary Park. I was embarrassed by the performance, I'd warned him beforehand what to expect as we're so terrible at home, but he was still surprised by just how bad we really were. On the plus side though, he thought the ground and atmosphere were fantastic - at the age of 58 he's decided he wants to become an Athletico 😀. Amazingly, he really does want to come again, so if there are more like him who saw the potential yesterday and enjoyed it despite the performance, maybe all is not lost.

this used to be the norm in the 80s the 183/4 around 12 from town would go onto OT when they were at home as would the 82 when citeah were at home

same at BP in the 70s would be a line of busses up sheepfoot lane to shaw rochdal and ashton etc  all the drivers would be stood in the main stand paddock for the last 15 mins

When I were a kid in the Chaddy, the sight of the bus drivers appearing in the main stand paddock was a welcome sign that there wasn't long left to hang on. Or, more frequently, a worrying reminder that there wasn't long left to get something from the game 😃. I used to get the 420 match special back to Failsworth, it was regularly ambushed at Fetherstall Road roundabout by visiting fans being escorted back to Werneth station... I soon learned to sit upstairs.

Don't think Dubose ever played in the first team?  Dean Bouzanis did

Dubose played one first team game, at home against Darlington in the League Cup. I remember it well, he had a slightly 'unorthodox' style - a tendency to try to save everything with his legs and he kept legging it out of his area - but still managed to keep a clean sheet though 😀

Darren mcdonagh born in hong kong iirc

It was Dougie Anderson who was born in Hong Kong, no longer with us sadly. Darron McDonough was born in Antwerp as has been correctly stated, although he lived near me in Failsworth.

Here's another couple of overseas players (apologies if they've already been mentioned and I've missed them), does anyone remember Winston Dubose or Orpheo Keizerweerd?!

Garbage. Hobson was head and shoulders above everyone else and even spent 75 minutes covering for Sutton. Even Shelton was covering for him. Shudder the thought.

I read on here that there were cries for Sutton to play in midfield.

I wholeheartedly agree. As long as it isn't ours.

Whilst Sutton is a Square peg, his decision making is awful. He turned and passed the ball into our own penalty area in the first half on his weaker foot when it was crowded with opposition players.

He should have hit it into row z.

He believes his own hype and whilst Hobson and Hogan can actually play out of trouble, he just wins headers which make him look "good", but invariably gives the ball back.

Worst right back since Steve Edwards.

Edit: makes Connoire Brun look like Cafu.

Aww, I liked Steve Edwards, always gave 100% 😀

  7. For me, Fondop cost us that today, he's a total liability and unprofessional. If he doesn't get sent off and Reid/Shelton take their chances I reckon we win comfortably against a decent side. It's all if's and but's though and Unsworth reverting to his default defensive nonsense at the start of the 2nd half cost us just as much.

All in all it's adding up to a nightmare start to the season and the league table is an absolute embarrassment.

  8. To cheer myself up I've just watched us beat Luton 1-0 away on the Big Match from 1978, it was on ITV4 this morning.

Two teams trying to win the match... how did we ever get from that to this modern 'don't lose at all costs' mentality?

I live in an area dominated by United and City fans, but I've always supported Latics loudly and proudly amongst them... today was utterly shocking and embarrassing.

Maybe it's sometimes darkest before dawn...

I was hoping that the change from BT might bring an option to pay for one-offs (guess what...) as I really don't need another monthly subscription, particularly as their coverage includes plenty of Rugby Union, Moto GP, UFC & Boxing (I've left off WWE as that ain't no sport!)- none of which hold the slightest appeal for me.

Seems like a missed opportunity to offer something different to me.

I totally agree. I went for the BT Sports subscription option at the start of last season, but I won't be renewing it for the reason you state. When Latics are on TV I'll just find a pub showing it (could be tricky, but not impossible, down here in Failsworth).

    yes it was their thing.

we flirted with it once or twice but it wasnt for us

I remember Joe Royle having the idea of Friday night friendlies in the late 80's, the idea being to make use of the plastic during winter postponements. The only one that actually took place was v West Brom, it was absolutely baltic and only about 600 turned up to watch so the idea was scrapped. I seem to recall we won though, with Gordon Smith scoring his one and only goal for us.
