yup, was in the printworks on me lunch yesterday about 1ish and there were quite a lot of people in there celebrating st georges day by drinking erm...... Belgian beer, in an Irish pub, and 2 of them were singing about the IRA. Clueless doesnt even begin to cover it.

Was great to see the flags up in Royton yesterday - made me very proud! Believe Hollinwood had flags up as well. Anywhere else ?

shame they were put up by people of "questionsble" political backgrounds.

i just think its a shame its getting harder and harder to distinguish between who genuinely wants to celebrate St Georges day for what it is (ie a celebration of England and its past present and future) and, without wanting to put too fine a point on it, racists.

I love this assumption that to be a Latics fan you have to hate United - it simply aint true... for me United have never, ever, been a rival to us... they have always been out of our league - and yes I was there to see us beat em many years back... I dont know whether i have just lived away from manchester and surrounding areas too long... but for me, if we aint gonna win everything, and we never will, I want United to stuff the bobbins out of everyone in the league, cups, and especially europe... they are the best team I have ever seen in my lifetime, and they are northern, and most importantly... they aint liverpool...

 

I hope united romp this european cup, and the league - they deserve it, they are simply awesome, and an absolutle pleasure to watch - for me, they are one of the few things that make the premiership worth watching...

apologies for implying the march was a waste of time, i admire displays of unity such as this.

exile - i am on here as an oldham fan. dont assume its a "he" i am related to, all i will state is that its not either cllrs harrison or bashforth, but wont be saying who it is!

rick - you are right, it was incorrect of me to state the whole of the committee's decision was over-turned for whatever reason without knowing all of them. i dont think i did say that explicitly, but i can see how the post could read like that.

also, if it has come across like i am canvassing, fair enough i hold my hands up and apologies unreservedly, i would never wish to influence anybody unduely, i dont think i have done this but again, with this being written text, any message can be taken in any context by different people. i am glad that the cllr i am related to doesnt do door to door canvassing anymore, only leaflets, because i value my personal safety far too much! and also i hate being jumped by people on my way to work asking me to donate to charities/sign petitions etc.

i agree in certain respects with your dislike of the party systme as it is - forcing people as we seem to do in so many walks of life to be a part of something rather then encourage individual thought, but thats a discussion for another thread in another part of the forum (and ive just finished my work for this evening so ill be logging off for a beer shortly)

i do consider other parties policies it just so happens that 99/100 times my feelings/beliefs tie in with the party i chose to vote for. i replied to this thread not to influence other people but to reply to ill-informed comments such as "trying to kill the club", or the accusation that cllrs dont care/are only in it for the money - in the case of the person i am related to, seeing the amount of time they spend on council business (again - im not speaking for all cllrs but the ones i know seem to be the same) it is far from a case of "in it for the money".

summing up (because im knackered and i want that beer!), apologies for any misunderstanding and rick - im sure we could have a bloody good discussion about the rights and wrongs of the political system etc etc, its refreshing to see a well composed response on this board, the majority just seem to mock, insult etc, im sure we would disagree and agree on numerous points - no hard feelings!

If you find someone disagreeing with your views and responding in a direct manner "very offensive", I suggest that you keep your views to yourself. I in no way apologise for tone of my reply.

 

Nobody can please all the people all of the time and this is why no-one has ever won a seat by 100% of the vote - so my statement stands.

The right to democracy in this country was fought for and I find your attitude to voting extreemly disappointing.

 

I am also very disapponted with your attitude about the stadium plans. I am in no doubt whatsoever, that if there was not the massive public show of support for the plans (including the march), the proposals would have been kicked out at the second attempt.

the reason i found it offensive was because of the implication that as i put my view across, i am somehow "simple". i have never and will never find anyone disagreeing with me offensive, as you correctly state, that right to democracy was fought long and hard.

also, i never actually said cllr harrison pleases all of the people all of the time, i was merely stating the fact that he represented the first group of his electorate who approached him.

my attitude to voting? by saying that somebody who has been in a job for the best part of 20 years cant be that bad, i am not saying that i would vote for him because i know him.

and lastly, the reason i am so confident the plans would be passed second time is that a close member of my family was on the planning comittee, and the public show of support, although impressive and worthy, did not impact on his/her decision, it was purely down to dialogue from both sides after the first meeting. (apologies, i should probably have declared this interest earlier)

I'll keep this simple for you.

 

If you feel that a Councillor has represented your views well - vote for them.

If you feel that they voted in a manner that opposes your stance - vote for someone else.

 

If you vote for someone because you known them and because they have been on the council a long time, then you are wasting your vote my friend.

 

If the future of professional sport in Oldham is something that you feel is important for us and also future generations, then get rid of the politicians who fill these posts - regardless of how long they have been allowed to get away with mis-representing their voters.

 

For the record, "the ground was always going to be passed second time round" is a pathetic comment. Tell that to Brighton and Hove Albion fans.

as tempted as I am not to reply to such an arrogant, condescending post, I feel I must come back on a couple of points.

Firstly, without knowing me please dont say things like "ill keep it simple for you", i could quite easily find that very offensive.

If Cllr Harrison wasnt representing his voters by representing them at the planning meetings, what was he doing? The people of Royton South approached him with their concerns etc, he acted on this, ok, even if you dont agree with him, he cannot be accused of mis-representing his constituents surely? So, if he was representing his voters (of which i am not one, as i live in a different area of Oldham), surely i wouldnt be wasting my vote if i could vote for him?

Finally, when did i say it was general comment about it being passed 2nd time round?i made no mention of B&H Albion. I was being specific to Oldhams case. I knew, as many others also suspected, it would get passed 2nd time.

Your council tax may have risen by 0% but both my father and father in law work for the council and they are slashing budgets hand over fist to meet the cost of not raising rates of CT. Services have already been decimated within this town and it is going to get worse with cuts right across the Borough.

without knowing what depts they work in, all i can say is that for years, a lot of council areas (highways is first to mind) tend to spend the remainder of the budget at the end of the fiscal year to justify that amount, there are a hell of a lot of departments/services under oldham council that could imo, do with a budget trim to concentrate on other areas.

woah woah woah, granted the ground redevelopment is a major issue for latics fans, but is that really a reason to vote someone in or out?last time the lib dems were in didnt they raise council tax by summat like 13%? i will be voting labour, always have voted labour, always will vote labour, although this is also because i cannot bear to vote tory.generally, i honestly believe oldham (as a whole) isnt to bad off and is more importantly heading in the right direction. instead of one or 2 schools to choose from i can safely think of about 7 or 8 off the top of my head that i would happily send my lad to in 2-3 years time, my council tax has just gone up 0%, and thats with an extra million quid invested in police numbers. another 3 or 4 years there will be metrolink, the new stadium, plus oldham will nearly have a shopping centre worthy of the name, (may take another year or 2 on top the 3 mentioned above).

another point,does anybody actually know phil harrison personally? i do and although he's a bit over the top at times, has been on the council for nearly 20 years. he must be shocking at it then.

the ground was always going to be passed second time round and if its true that only 350 flats are going to be built in the forseeable future, imo there was no need to risk it all for permission for 700, when it would be more likely to be more accepted in stages, ie build 300, let everybody see the traffic wont be a problem, add another X number of flats/houses/whatever.

and finally, unless you actually know a fair number of councillors, it is grossly unfair to throw slurs like "parasites" around.

seriously though, not as a direct response but a response to all the "the world is ending after a defeat" threads of the past couple of days. GET A GRIP! if everyone did as much thinking about how to improve attendances/raise money/insert idea here as they did with all this soul searching in depth analysis, next season would be a doddle. if your not getting your relaxation/recreation from supporting your team, where do you get it from? i think i have mentioned in a previous post to an earlier thread after the last defeat, but a bit of PERSPECTIVE is needed in a few quarters.

and one last thing whilst im typing at 3 million words a minute, does anybody else feel like they are being brain washed with all this "keep the faith" after loads of posts - we get the idea, dont go and support united or city after a defeat, its all starting to sound a bit cultish to me.

1) Wtf, who the hell are you to tell people what they can and cant do at a bleeding football .. unless you pay them in pipe down!

 

2) Well, the booing and a Shez rollocking didnt seem to harm them second half did it ... so that point kinda goes down the drain.

 

I dont really like booing during the match, after a bad pass etc as that singles people out and affects performances, however if the team as a whole are playing poorly, or just arent fighting why cant people tell them ... its only a boo for christ sake.

bloody hell, im starting to see what some people mean by other posters seeing their ar*e when someone has the temerity to disagree with them. i have never ever told anyone what to do at the football, and would never dream of doing so. i was just offering an opinion. i dont think the booing made them perform 2nd half, it was probably a combination of a rollicking and (hopefully) some tactical adjustments, so that point doesnt go down the drain, i am sure it wasnt a result of people booing.

its only a boo? yes, it is only 1 boo if its just you, or a.n.other, or maybe its only a handful, but if its a large minority/majority, players are not going to want to do anything for fear of someone getting on their back straight away for not landing a 60 yard pass on a specific blade of grass. then before you know it, you have the majority of the crowd booing if the side is behind at half time, whats that all about? football is entertainment, anybody putting themselves on the verge of a thrombie needs a look at their priorities, in my opinion.

on a seperate note, whats with all the "wtf" and "who the hell are you", chill, i have have sworn the 1000+ members of this board are on the same side, you wouldnt have thought so reading the rantings of some people.

nope, the clues in the word SUPPORTers. ok, vent frustration on here, in the pub, on the cat/dog/insert other pet here, but never, ever boo your own team. if, as has been claimed in the past, sheridan reads this board, he will be aware there is an element of unhappiness amongst the support (or at least you would hope he is!) and will be making changes as he sees fit, if people dont like the moaners, christ can you imagine a players dread for the 2nd half after being booed off? no-brainer on my part.

You said he was a fool to admit his intent. It doesn't matter if he's only one of a hundred, or even a thousand, players who've ever set out to harm another player intentionally. The point is there should be no place in football for such players.

no, there shouldnt be, but its a fact of life in pretty much any contact sport. watching saints bradford friday night, after sam burgess cleared a saints player out (forget who), it was like a benny hill sketch for the next ten minutes every time he got the ball, with about 4 or 5 saints players virtually fighting to drop him first, maybe even accidentally leading with a high arm. it goes on, its part of the territory defending of sport. not saying i condone it but its always been there, always will. look at the arsenal players at OT last week, like me with a 9 iron every time they got near Nani.

he did show loyalty but it wasnt intended. he turned newcastle down as the contract on offer was very heavily weighted towards performance bonuses rather than guaranteed salary, plus would he rather have possibly shown himself up as alimited manager when given a big budget and big expectations a.k.a "big sam", or continued to "work wonders" in the middle reaches of an average premier league?
