  1. beat me to it with Grant Holt, something just tells me he may be one to come in, no knowledge just a feeling based on what we need and what/who realistically could come in.

Local, not getting a game at Wigan. Not necessarily a starter, but could come on and hold it up properly and better than Cassidy at present.

Can't run but at worst he would get us up the pitch by holding it up and allow midfielders with pace to join the attack.

Swing a cross over and he is a big unit to shift and get past, always liable to get on the end of something.

  2. And to think, we wanted to sell out top scorer 2 weeks ago.......

Not a top scorer by fluke you know

Touched the ball 3 times today on the commentary and once was a goal, that's all we need

Even if he plays 25 games he'll get us 10 goals

Players like Dunn and Croft will thrive off having him in the team. Sure there'll be games where his knees mean he isn't effective, but goals aside he is still a good technical player who is always a threat even if he doesn't score.

I'd rather we keep Forte and sell, as much as he does deserve a chance, Murphy, we know what we're getting with JF in the team

  3. maybe an announcement will be on the website tomorrow?, chron get the first chat with him?? - allows for people to plan re bank holiday weekend, boost to the attendance and buzz for season tickets, formal news conference next week???

really clutching at those straws with this theory...!

  4. Having watch leeds at sheff weds last week, Redfearn plays the same as we do now, narrow and no wingers. Think he is similar to TP good with the kids and youth but not much else, just a hunch

Dowie on the other hand just exudes enthusiasm, knowledge and drive

These videos show you what we know we would be getting - a proper coach - i'd get my boots on myself to play for this guy, very inspiring listening to him.

only this link works for some reason, other video links on different coaching areas are at bottom of page

    Fingers crossed!

  5. 2 years ago he quickly came out and said he turned it down when he was asked and we then went and signed Johnson.

This time he won't (or can't) comment....

....read into that as you wish

Interesting too that Chron hasn't posted anything major on the manager hunt regarding Yates etc. I get the feeling they know it's Dowie but been asked to keep quiet in return for an exclusive.

IF it is him then I'm happy with appointment but curious on what our budget will be next season. He wanted an ambitious budget...it's likely the new stand allows this or perhaps Blitz has reignited his interest and bankrolling on the field because of all the positivity off it and all the stars aligning (Dowie, solid team contracted, new stand, off field income activities, upturn in ST interest) to make next season a great opportunity...

I agree, there's been virtually no other names banded about whatsoever aside from those in the Chron and that includes supposed 'sources' on here who are quick with 'info'

Think we will all know come 12noon sunday anway

  6. picture and reports on it all look brilliant - well done to all!

People buying season tickets in new stand, current renewals, possible rumour of Dowie coming back....100% would demonstrate ambition and a desire to achieve something long term for the club

It's what we all want and assuming all this comes off, whatever the ins and outs and budgets etc are, it's the club saying 'right, we've done our bit now you do yours and back us'

People will when they see proactivity and by the sounds of it many already are doing with new stand tickets.

Fingers crossed re the manager, but all in all well done Latics and SC, very pleased for him that his hard work is beginning to pay off and I hope fans do indeed back all concerned and get behind the club in any way they can.

Crowds should be interesting next season if all works out as it appears, all adds to the wages budget!

  7. from an old article at the time

He would not have left if last season's play-off team had not been so cruelly ripped apart

Iain Dowie has spoken about his decision to leave Athletic and admits that he would not have left if last season’s play-off team had not been so cruelly ripped apart. Dowie said, “I’m sure I would be there today if we hadn’t lost so many players – that was an exciting young side. What happened in the summer was a tragedy for the club, but I sincerely hope they will emerge strong under the new owners. It’s for other people to judge my time there, but to be party to very good standards being put in place was the kind of legacy I wanted to leave. In terms of coaching and the players’ character, I hope things moved on significantly.”

“My time at Oldham was among the best of my career, either as player or coach, and the people of the town were brilliant. There are low points in any job, but I have come away with only good memories – of the fans, of a great chance to cut my managerial teeth and of the players, who were an absolute revelation. It would have been nice to stay and drive them further forward, but hopefully that will happen under new management on and off the pitch. If it hadn’t been a club the size of Palace, I wouldn’t have gone. But this was an opportunity I had to take. My leaving Oldham might help them financially because it saves them giving me a three-year contract. To be fair, I’ve had good dealings with the new owners and there was nothing else they could do. I’m sure some people will be glad to see me go, and I’m sure others won’t. That’s football, but I’ll always be grateful to Oldham for a wonderful time in my career.”

He could easily have walked that summer, he didn't, he stayed and fought for the club until an offer came along that he had to take for no doubt his family's sake and his career.

How anyone can have a go at either a player or manager for moving on to (as they see it) better opportunities always confuses me - take OAFC out of the equation and it is the same as any other job, anyone would do it.

You hope that some success can be had in their time which then creates a bond with the club and it's fans and then everyone is happy; but people move on for various reasons and that is just life.

I'd welcome him back gladly - sure, no guarantees of anything being achieved, but there isn't with whoever we have in charge or in the team; but at least we know what we will get and he would try his best, that's all you can ask for

  8. That Duxbury average thing is a windup right?

I mean in terms of technical ability, he was a great player for us and a workhorse, but never technically gifted ala Sheridan - if i'm correct he was at the end of his career when Dowie was here - even so, my point is Dowie got them all fitter than ever and he got that extra bit out of them all, making them an efficient team, money or otherwise

  9. No guarantees with any manager who takes the job, but one thing (assuming rumours are true) that you know you will get is committment and hard work.

Sure, he may not have managed on our budgets previously, but he already has a half decent squad in place - maybe sell one or two, get 3-4 in and a couple others/long term loans and we will have as good a chance as any next season.

The squad he had last time had a few average players like D Sheridan, etc, but he pushed them that extra 5% and got them all to believe in themselves and their ability.

This current group including Winchester, Turner, Poleon could go a long way with a bit of coaching and help

  10. While your thoughts are very similar to mine I am not sure Corney would divulge 3 names (if indeed he did) as red herring's - unless of course something has happened since.

True, but from memory the Chronicle article never directly quotes anyone when it mentions those supposed three names, which to me says they are either plucking them out of thin air or were given them by the club, in the knowledge that whilst they may have applied, were/aren't real contenders

May well be wrong of course, only speculating

Anyway, we'll soon find out, i'm tired of thinking about all the if's, but's, maybe's, lets have an answer

  11. I still maintain that all the talk of Yates/Ashworth/Holden is all a smokescreen - why 'reveal' names to the local paper when deliberations supposedly still ongoing?

With the greatest respect to these three candidates, the board must appreciate that appointing any of them would lead to a likely loss in season ticket sales, whereby the average fan who has an interest but not able to attend all matches would read that and immediately conclude 'cheap option' or 'same old same old, no ambition' - SC's request in the paper recently for fans to get behind the team certainly wouldn't be aided by the above.

Call that a cynical viewpoint and perhaps it is - who know's, any one of the above could do well, there is no guarantee with anyone as Manager as to what will happen.

However, with the stand going to completion and requirements to drum up interest from all parties in aid of the new facilities, this will only be aided by what is going on on the pitch, that's the cold fact of it when all said and done.

The club therefore do need, maybe not necessarily 'a name' but someone who on the face of it would entice people or perk their interest again. If we as fans can see this then as business people the board will to.

I can foresee a PA announcement prior to the P'boro kick-off, followed by Dowie or Rosler walking down the steps onto the pitch as the new man - perks everyone up from the reportedly 'underwhelming' names into positive mode and a greater urge to then buy a season ticket.

Very clever marketing if you ask me.

  12. This rumour doesn't fit with the journalist narrative that Corney has been conducting second interviews with potential managers in Oldham today.

Surely either one or the other...

Personally speaking, i think this whole second interviews thing is just all a smokecreen for things going on behind the scenes/already in place.

The fact that the Chron has had to re-hash the Yeates line for the past 2 weeks suggests they haven't anything of note to report

  13. why do some think that he would be 'out of our price range'?

There are only ever a limited number of football league jobs and any boss out of work would be interested.

Rosler is out of work, presumably has a nice chunk of £ from his sacking at Wigan, lives locally and we are a decent club with a decent core of a squad; and a bit of promise for the future with the new stand etc.

    Of course he'd be interested.

Not my first choice, but not a bad one either, assuming he is the new boss.

  14. He's not to be appointed at all.

Corney said that whilst he'd more than have him back, its unlikely from Dowie's perspective.

    Not totally ruled out though.

From the GMR session SC said he knows what Dowie would give us but also said it has to be right for Dowie, but at the same time not discounting it.

End of the day we will have a certain budget we can spend on wages as will every club at our level with FFP rules. It's up to Dowie whether he takes it on under the resources he would have, it would be his chance back in the management side of the game when all said and done.

He either takes it on the resources we have as a club, or he doesn't. If he's up for a challenge again then why would he not?

Either way it's up to the powers that be and Dowie himself, what will be will be.

I'd love to have him back, but if not then i'm sure someone out there could do an equally decent job as LJ did to be fair, got us decent players and got them to perform for the most part.

    Let's wait and see

  15. twitter 'rumours' are saying warburton to be appointed.

Aside from a possible agreement in place with Dowie after expiration of committments, this would fit the end of season theory.

No doubt has money from his trading days, wants to manage 'his way' ie say on transfers etc, coaching players, has good experience in academy football.

Only question i suppose is would he come up north? Only so many clubs in London and aside from Millwall, doubt anyone attractive to him would be appointing a new manager any time soon, so not many manager job options available to him.

Quote in a recent article he did re Brentford changes, 'jobs are hard to come by'

Would be the next best fit for me if not Dowie

  16. Still in NY from what I've heard so no meeting in person...

But if the Dowie stuff is so tenuous, it's hard to understand how his odds got so low, even shorter than LJ - after he'd already been chosen by Barnsley...

from an earlier post by SCIG (his info has been fairly reliable up to now)

Simon's not gone back to New York and he is going to the Charity do at the weekend

  17. still want Dowie - someone wanting a shot at it just to 'see how they go' and thinking they can be successful by just playing for us isn't what we need.

Need someone with brain and who is a good coach, not a current player took on just because they're 'a name', might work for 10 games but then that'll be it, novelty wears off

(i'll get ready to eat my hat when they're appointed and fire us into the top 6)
