  1. Anybody who thinks Liam Kelly is ':censored:e' knows absolutely nothing about football - or indeed about how our manager is setting us up to play.

He was efficient, unremarkable, yet essential to a hard fought, scrappy - and all the more valuable for it! - win!!

We have to work on maintaining the tempo of our play as we tire in the second half, and ensuring we keep our options when in possession is key.

To do that well, Liam Kelly is absolutely essential!!

Those that think so will realize what he brings to the team when he misses a game shortly due to 5 yellows, same goesfor J Wilson as well, both on 4 yellows

Need them both massively for the sheff utd and dale games

If at all possible i'd take a tactical booking against Sheff Utd so they both miss the JPT game

Like many after 6 games i couldn't see what Kelly's purpose was or what his attributes were; far from being match fit, he performed dreadfully, could do nothing right.

Then another 5 or so games fitness in him and getting used to Jones, he slowly became more influential in games, passed better and started to assert himself on opponents more.

He is now quite rightly our key player, nothing fancy but he always seems one move ahead when in posession and his positioning is very good.

Gladly proved wrong, as i'm sure many others are, that's what we wanted to happen and he's done it.

Credit to him, gets on and does his job

  2. Porter is very keen on coming back, Johnson wants him but Corney is 50/50 mainly worried about what the fans will think/give him as reception

Nothing a quick statement on the website apologising for the way he left and a goal on your debut can't change

Again, as with these things all we ever heard was the OAFC side of the story, not that any of what we were told at the time was incorrect; but we also never heard his side, so who really knows what went on?

Purely on footballing ability (as it should be) - tough one. His knees have gone and although he would take over from Wilkinson and be in the same mould, Wilkinson has more pace and mobility than him. In the box he would be a target, but i have never been impressed with him since he has left us and feel we definately had the best of him when we has here 1st time.

But end of the day it's up to LJ, If he thinks he is what we need then we'll have to take it on the chin and hope he does his best for us, that's all you can ask

  3. don't fear Pboro at all - not the threat they have been in the past ie Assombalonga etc

Had a few lucky 1-0's recently including saturday (their goal was a joke in terms of defending from fleetwood)

Aside from Bristol City no one else looks like a team who are better than their current level and even they manage to ship a few goals a game.

Do our jobs properly as we've been doing and ensure we have our shooting boots on, then we should get a point minimum

  4. Now you're talking.

I'd have him ahead of Derbyshire.

Am I alone in not really rating Derbyshire when he was here?

    Didn't score many, did he?

As with almost all strikers we have had he didnt get the service!

Porter? - No - knees and legs went ages ago, wouldn't even have the legs to get in the box anymore.

Derbyshire? - yes - pace with other players and he'd sniff the chances out and he works hard for the team.

Davies? - yes - will score goals and can hold it up, bit of a loose cannon but so was JCH allegedly

  5. yet again, assuming sources are correct, we go and pop another balloon of positivity

Yet another wholesale squad change in 12 months, another promising player leaves at the drop of a hat a the usual pathetic sums no doubt offered to us ie £200k

£1m + 20% sell on plus Leon Clarke or tell them to sod off

    Please take stance Latics!

  6. How about the whole bloody team starts to man up and actually want to get in the oppo box and score??

What is the insistance every season on 'we need that striker'???

Yes having one that scores 15-20 goals a season is welcome, but does no one realise that the way the manager has us playing means we create very little across the whole team and thereby having Leon Clarke up front as an example, would in itself be pointless given his lack of service/supporting runners??

Yesterday it was seriously one of the worst games i had seen us play - no aggression, no pressuring of opponents, 30 seconds behind where the ball was going and therefore chasing shadows; couldn't pass a ball 5 yards, no clear pattern of play or structure - passing to midfield who then stopped and turned back, passed to the CB, the the FB, long ball, oppo have it back again.

    Awful

Then the last 20mins someone flicked a switch and we suddenly began to RUN and MOVE and PASS.......low and behold we had a couple of good chances..........

We play in a way that is defensive and negative - hitting teams on the counter attack both home and away............except we don't counter and don't counter at pace. No wonder JCH looks disinterested having to hold it up for 10 minutes before anyone from midfield even thinks 'oh yeah, i might make a run here he looks like he needs a hand' - where are the runners beyond or just behind JCH??

If you're playing sunday league football, it would be instinctive to make the supporting run even before the defender has kicked it long for the striker, as you know he will need support - we don't do this so they must be under instruction to 'hold position' and not move forwards.

Defensively by all means LJ have a system and structure, but when are attacking, how about asking Kelly to stay back but asking everyone else + fullbacks to get up the pitch and run at the opposition???

    Just a thought.............................

We have the players, they are being stifled by our manager's tactics. If we played all game every game like we did in the last 20mins yesterday but still lose, i would accept that; clearly we wouldn't be good enough would be the final verdict, but we at least saw effort and desire to attack, that'll do me.

And now, just like GJ down the road at Yeovil, they are both talking about shipping players out 3 weeks after saying they were both happy with their squads....?

More players chopped out of the team then, more players who are unfit, more players who will take time to gel only they won't get the time because we aren't getting results; manager then needs results so changes personnel, that doesn't work so in come more players

    And repeat.

I accept we have a limited budget thereby our players won't be the best, but that doesn't excuse a lack of running, desire to score a goal and general effort; up to 70mins yesterday we had none of that, it really was bad.

We're not expecting Iniesta-esque football either, just wingers and midfielders who get themselves and the ball in the box and occasionally have a shot.

Apart from a JCH drive and a Elokobi (yes, a centre half) having a swing, no one from midfield get mildly close enough to the box to have a shot.................

Look at yourself Lee before the players. Either way if it carries on the way it is then the inevitable will happen, so it's up to him to change it.

  7. it doesn't matter WHO is up front - no service like last season = no goals from whoever you are

If we create, these strikers will score

And lo and behold if we actually spread goals around the team then the 'just need that 20 goal-a-season striker (every season apparently)' becomes no issue

  8. Fair enough, just personally feel like the midfield & attack was better at the start of last season and it took a couple of loans, especially Harkins to invigorate the squad and take us away from danger.

Now the squad in my eyes, the defence is better but the midfield has slightly worsened and the attack especially and with LJ saying no more permanent signings im worried that we're lacking goals & couple that with the midfield, i feel we may be slightly in trouble.

Put in this way i haven't been worried before a start of a season before, and with the squad with the way it is at the moment that worrying feeling has returned.

We NEED someone like a Clarke etc to put the ball in the back of the net and also help the inexperienced lads in the squad.

    Just my opinion

I know what you're saying, but the whole issue here for me, as it was last season, is it does not matter a jot who we have up front - if we continue to play 4-5-1, defend as a team 30 yards from our goal and then break forward at a snail's pace when we do have the ball; no one who is playing up front will score!

I just cannot fathom why we are set up playing the way we are - only the top teams who have the players with real skill and fitness ala Germany can afford to line up with strikers as wingers, we cannot.

We do have a talented squad yet it is being stifled by LJ and after the promise of last season i am very suprised - it's almost as if just because the football style didn't quite come off in terms of chances converted and therefore games won; that he's dismissed it as if it never existed and took up this defensive approach out of nowhere

    4-4-2 please LJ

JCH and Gros up top does sound threatening........................I wouldn't fancy a battle from those two every week
