  2. 14 great games

Oldham athletic by rick Holden and Dave Moore.

Ordered a few days back and got told it would be here in jan. It arrived two days later and for any of you out there like me are in your mid 30s onwards is a must read as it brings back lots of fantastic memories.

If any younger fans who were unfortunate not to be around in the late 80s early 90s it will let you into what a bit of success with a fantastic team was all about.

Stories from rick Holden are fantastic with lots of anecdotes throughout from him and also fans views on the games.

Looking at the team sheets throughout and you notice a very steady, solid team who in today's market would be worth a fortune.

Rick Holden likens the way we played at times to the way Barcelona play now! High praise from our crazy winger.

A must read for all Latics fans.

  3. I've slagged England off either on this or other threads and will do so in future. Last night showed what my problem with England is most of the time, that spell when players were kicking lumps out of each other but no player stayed down like a wuss was exactly how it should be. Players used to be kicked up in the air and wouldn't have dreamed of showing any pain to the opposition - this has changed now so it was good to see a return to a man's game. Plus England played with a tempo and to their strengths rather than trying to not be what they aren't and play a continental style game.

Granted it was a Championship level side that we beat but we should play like that against the better side rather than trying to match them. But the best bit was when they scored only to have their hopes crushed by us scoring again. The best comedy writers couldn't come up with something that good.

When they scored their fans were like we were when the fifth went in against Peterborough last season!!! With one over enthusiastic Scotsman jumping the fence and running towards the england fans in his kilt followed by about 30 stewards and coppers!

I've never felt more of a smug proud Englishman when Rooney got the third and a stunned silence and dawning reality within the Scotland fans fell upon them.

  4. Just in from the match, (live in Scotland) sat in the Scotland end and I can honestly say I've never been to a match anywhere where there is such hatred towards the other team and fans.

I got dogs abuse throughout so glad to be home

    In one piece!!!!!

England fans were excellent throughout, they must have been taking lessons from the athleticos!

  5. The FA are a joke in many ways and in my opinion whilst the actions of the bid team were clearly not as suspect as some of the other bid teams it doesn't change the fact that they acted abhorrently.

The English talent available for selection is currently the weakest I can remember by some distance and the structure of football in this country is such that I can't see that changing any time soon.

These are facts that change nothing about the fact that I am English and care passionately about our national team. I know that the odds of seeing us win something are somewhere between slim and zero but so what. Football isn't and never has been about supporting a team because they are successful.

England need the fans to get behind them now more than ever but it seems that many have given up.

There is no football experience to match following your country (particularly away) in my opinion.

I treat club and country the same. I wouldn't give up on Latics if we got relegated and I wouldn't give up on England if they fail to qualify for tournaments.

There are a number of England players that I have little time for but there have been plenty of Oldham players where I've felt the same. When you pull in the shirt all is forgiven for 90 minutes and you support them to 100%.

I know these views aren't popular at the moment but next Tuesday when I am at Celtic Park with 4,500 other England supporters belting out the national anthem I will get to experience something special.

If we can somehow turn it round and progress at the next World Cup or the one after that it will mean so much because of sticking with them through the lean times in the same way that the victory over Liverpool meant so much more to those of us that have seen much of the :censored: Latics have served up in recent history than to those who just turned up for the 'big game'.

I'm English and I love football. I don't see how I could possibly not support England. That's how being a fan is supposed to work.

I know these views aren't popular at the moment but next Tuesday when I am at Celtic Park with 4,500 other England supporters belting out the national anthem I will get to experience something special.

Make that 4,501. Got myself a ticket in the Scotland end. God help me!

  6. Seeing as my first away match wasn't until 1997, the best I've been a part of was Liverpool in the cup and Wigan in the League. One of my personal favourites was when we went to Huddersfield in the 2006/07 season as the volume seemed to double the numbers.

Out of interest how many did we take to Bolton in the 1994 FA Cup? That looked like a fantastic turnout

I was in the burnden terrace for this and nearly got my head kicked in when we scored!!!

  7. He's brought in players who were possibly stalling at their previous clubs and actually want to play and further themselves, giving them a licence to prove what they can do and this season it seems to be paying off.

Rather like one of our ex managers who didn't do too bad a job for us!!!!

Not for one minute am I saying he's like big joe but he is certainly giving us a team who really could do special things if they stay together.

    Now, where's that plastic pitch????

  8. I'm dead against it, we score, we celebrate, we glance at the linesman for a split second, we carry on celebrating. They joy is new and raw. If this comes in we won't celebrate as we should, when the goal goes in we will be waiting around for someone to object and the joy of the moment will be gone.

    Not for me.

  9. Erm no he didn't

You will find he spent a good couple of spells in both the 89-90 and 90-91 season injured. In fact if he wasn't injured for that final game against Sheffield weds it would have been him rather than Neil redfearn stepping up to take that penalty.

And on that note I am going to YouTube that moment right now and for the one millionth time get goosebumps! Good morning all...

  10. The best "kit launch" was when I was young and I used to get my mum to ring the clubshop every night after I got in from school to see if the new kit was out. None of this teaser :censored:e, just a good old phone call then off to Latics to buy it the following morning then wearing it to school that day. It didn't matter what it looked like because it was my new oldham athletic kit.
