Remember all that! Southport away on Easter Monday was actually my 10th birthday, which by simple maths makes it 15 years to the day prior to the Hillsborough disaster. We achieved a lot in that 15 years.

Some other memories - Formby away in the FA cup - so close to the pitch that when George Jones scored the ball nearly hit me in the face as the net bulged. Liverpool away in the cup - lost 3-1 but outplayed them for long periods and they only sealed it after Steve Heighway dived for a penalty. Never heard a Liverpool player booed at Anfield so loudly by thousands of ‘tics.

It certainly seemed more enjoyable back then but that’s just the innocence and wide eyed expectation of youth I guess combined with year after year of relegation battles for what seems like forever.

Highlights of that Liverpool game on the big match revisited now on BT 1

  2. Alan Groves in the 6-0 demolition of Huddersfield in the 1974? promotion season. Got the ball on the right wing in front of the main stand, beat his man (twice), cut inside and smashed it left footed across the keeper and into the far corner. The keeper dived but I'm sure he didn't even see it.

Anyone remember Groves volley from the edge of the box, the ball played to him straight from a corner? No idea who it was against but was 74/5/6 in the old 2nd division.

  3. No signing players for the sake of it that I haven’t personally seen. I will delve into their background, social media, are they always out? Do they live breathe football? Are they fit, young, hungry that want to better themselves? I will not sign any player permanently that I haven’t done a serious amount of homework on. If they are right for me, the team and Oldham Athletic they will get a deal, if they are simply another ‘name’ not a chance. With loanees they are a stop gap so it’s different but no player will get a permanent contract at Oldham Athletic without my strict process of due-diligence being carried out. Only when all the boxes are ticked then, only then they get the deal.

For this alone he gets my vote :chubb:

  4. When I was about 10 years old I lived on an RAF base in Norfolk. All me & my mates did from morning to night was play football. They all had their favourite teams except me so one Sunday I got the league tables out of the paper, closed my eyes and stuck a pin in.

Wolves were now my team and I followed them avidly, even going to the league cup semi in 74 at molineux against Norwich to see them win a place in the final. I remember optimistically putting a £1 postal order in the post to Wolves asking for a Wembley ticket but never got a reply.

Used to hitch-hike the 30 odd miles to Carrow Rd a lot to watch Norwich as well so they were my second team but in 1974 dad left the RAF and family moved to Saddleworth. One Saturday I got on the 184 to town and it was full top & bottom with Latics fans. Decided to tag along and the rest is history

Still look out for Wolves and Norwich though.
