  1. what's wrong with leeds met...?

It's not exactly The London School Of Economics, is it? Hopefully they will teach him about Option Theory, and he may want at some point to buy back into his option to train as a professional footballer. There can be a lot of value in that for the few that make it, both in terms of cash and lifestyle. Whereas a degree in Economics from Leeds Met will probably put him on course to be a middle manager in a building society. If it were me I'd have waited until the first option was dead and cremated before I took up the second one.

  2. On the subject of rugby and football mixing, it seems rugby league is a better fit than rugby union for pitch impact.

I want the wealthy man to own Oldham Athletic. I am, however, concerned.

If we're to see a negotiation in the press it will almost certainly delay or stop the stand being built. So I take the view that he should be talking to Corney behind closed doors, agreeing a settlement with Blitz and Gazal and then start confirming his intentions, including absolute clarity where this fantastic new community stadium will be located. Anything dragged out beyond a few weeks is, quite simply, bad for Latics.

Owning two rugby league clubs? Sorry, but we're in Robert Maxwell territory here. It makes me very uncomfortable. The guy may well have made his money fairly and ethically. He's more than welcome, in my mind, to lavish it freely on Latics. But he has to understand that a sporting conflict of interests is unacceptable to anybody with a true love of either association football or rugby league.

I agree with rudemedic who suggests a "no comment" response to Mike Keegan's questions would have been appropriate.

My message to Koukash? Cut the crap, behave ethically, put up the cash and take us forwards. If you're not prepared to do all of that then please do one. I'll have to put up with Uncle Simon a little longer.

Is that the same Uncle Simon that saved our football club?

  3. Not really..but 'Pointonesque' keeps it at Latics..however, I can see your point too.

I will never forget Pointon's corners causing complete havoc in the opposition's box and the odd one sneaking in.

I remember one hitting the underside of the crossbar and the back of an opposition player's head before going in the net..can't remember which game, though..it might have been against Southampton.

Yes, I remember one total :censored: screaming at Pointon because his corners were "crap". That for me was the most idiotic example of the many I have seen where our own "supporters" slag off the team. Who also remembers Pointon's amazing volleyed goal against Southampton in the final game of the great escape? Both feet off the floor when he hit it and it went like a rocket. He was a great left back.

  4. Baxter going is not the end of the world. I rather felt we looked to him a little too much and when the opposition were on their game he was squeezed out. He was an inconsistent focal point rather than a a vital cog in the wheel. He'll be missed when we look back at the goal highlights reel from this season, I don't think he'll be missed when we look at the table.

I'm just mainly glad that we have plenty of assets again (both current and potentially). Unlike an earlier poster, I think the key to progression in this division and beyond (for a club like ours) is always have teams knocking on your door offering to buy your players. Sometimes we will have to sell, but so long as we are as plugged into the football world as LJ seems to be, suitable replacments can be found.

    Ab-so-lute-ly

  5. I look at the squad named for the game tomorrow and the possibility of one or even two more players coming in before Tuesday and I'm stunned......if someone had told me last May we'd have all those players in our squad for the coming season I'd have said they were mad..

I don't know how LJ has managed it on our budget but WOW!!!! that is a tremendous squad for Latics in this division.

Absolutely, and playing great football too. LJ is relentless in his professionalism. We will improve every week. If it weren't for a couple of individual errors, which I am sure he is working to iron out, we would have beaten Posh away. I have the feeling that LJ is going to be a great manager - too early to say, of course, but I'm getting that feeling quite strongly.

  6. The development of all the young players will accelerate this season as they now have proper coaching and management. Tarky, along with the others, has been held back, and will show huge improvement this season. Any yes, apart from pace (which I'm sure they will work on) he has got lots of talent, including leadership ability and a winning mentality.

  7. Overall we played good football, but with no cutting edge (until injury time). We defended very well indeed and were undone by two idiotic errors.

Oxley. 5. Really bad error for the penalty, otherwise looked OK.

Brown. 7. He's a good player in my view, and he always does his best. Lovely cross for the goal.

Mills. 7. Good left back, did well.

Grounds. 7. Really good at centre back, defended well and played it out of defence well too.

Tarky. 7. A really good prospect.

Wes. 5. As one or two have said, he is too sideways and backwards. If we are going to pass and move then we must be incisive. He kills momentum.

Smith. 7. Good focus, retention and passing throughout (with a couple of very crap exceptions).

Dayton. 7. Did well but his shooting on YouTube is a lot better than it is on the pitch.

Montano. 7. Would have been great except he got kicked off the pitch.

Baxter. 4. Really not very good today, and the way he gave away the ball for the first goal was shameful. Lazy, careless and weak.

Rooney. 6. Gave it a good go and had one excellent header, but othewise didn't threaten.

    Millar. 5. A poor man's Charlie MacDonald.

Sid. 5. He gets these marks mainly for effort, but he always looks ineffectual to me. Very little end product.

MacD. 8. Really good little cameo. Sharp, fast, quick thinking and did well for his goal. A proper striker.

  8. or even Andy Ritchie, not his sister Annie ;-)

In my 50 years I have never seen any other Latics players that really came close to them. There were some wonderful players in the Prem team (Warhurst was amazing, and was always going to be a top striker for someone), Richard Jobson, Earl Barrett, Rick Holden etc. But those 3 were very special and different.

  9. It does seem to be common sense, doesn't it? Put in a swinging corner of good length at reasonable pace and have a couple of people arriving late in the box. That's how John Wark used to score all his goals for Ipswich and Liverpool. He got one like that for Ipswich at BP, which I think was the game in which Andy Ritchie scored with a back heel, although my memory is not great for stuff like that.

  10. Unsure what I'm doing here. I'm trying to register for the full thingybob, so here are my answers to the questions!
