  1. In terms of having some commitment to working for the team and trying to keep Latics up, there is an easy pecking order....

    1. Gardner - Grafts hard with a degree of skill

    2. Fane- grafts hard but lacking the required skill

    3. Bucket loads of skill but no commitment to the team....spends his energy whingeing at team mates....very sad and frustrating!!

Best outcome....they all pretend their team mates committed to the team for the next two games....please!!?

Whilst its difficult to pick out good points from the season so far - and from the game on Saturday, but I am with the very small minority that doesn't think that Bank's is the pathetic excuse for a footballer many on here (and in the ground) think he is.

As I said, no player is doing well at the moment, but Banks for me isn't worse than Fane, Dummingan, Hunt (on Saturday), Green etc etc in our midfield.  My frustration with Banks is that I think he has the potential to be our best midfielder, and the fact that he isn't means a waste of talent.

I know that this view is not popular - so expect the abuse that follows....

I agree with this. I don't suggest he is a great player, just he seems to get the most stick when they are all playing rubbish in a crazy and ever changing system. You're right that he (and possibly Flynn) are capable of much better if they extract digit.

He doesn't try and do everything though and his teammates weren't statues (Gardner closed down as much as he could especially in front of the defenders - making him less of an attacking threat, Hunt wasn't the best with his control going yards in front of him, McLaughlin was our second best player and Kyeremeh had a decent debut but refused to go down the line). He shits out of tackles and doesn't close down. He keeps getting picked because the other (slightly better) options are injured. I don't abuse him when he's playing as I get behind the team but I'll opine on here if that's ok with you?

Opinion is what's OWTB is all about. Be a bit naff if we all agreed about everything, except our favourite team and the pain they cause.

    Because he's shit?

Interesting that Shez keeps picking him and drops others? Then again Shez, Wright and Wellens are just our management team and an all ex-players, what would they know about skills and trying to do everything while your team-mates play statues in midfield (as Saturday)? I must remember when I'm watching the kids playing to help then along by abusing their every kick as often and as loudly as possible. It is bound to improve their performance....maybe not?

It simply isn't about spending loads in the transfer market

Both John Sheridan and Richie Wellens were combative and played every game to Win

Tommy Wright another combative player with a decent goals to games ratio

What bemuses me is that all three seem unable to at least get their playing attitude into our players and you wouldn't be looking forward to having to play against a team with a 'midfield' including Richie Wellens, Tommy Wright and John Sheridan !

What happened to 'coaching and improving' players !

    Attacking and Defending Corner Kicks

    Attacking and Defending Free Kicks

    Maximising 'Throw Ins'

Pressing and closing down the opposition

Pass & Go, NOT just hoofing the ball

Being fit enough to keep going for 90mins

On Saturday our lone striker had virtually all the 'passes' to him in the air against two giant Wigan Defenders, No33 being 6'7" :disappointed:

We're highly unlikely to ever get enough to simply buy in talent so we seriously need to improve on our coaching and player attitudes to playing for our Club

How true. Agree with every word. If the tree of them can't instill a fighting mentality into the team, they don't deserve paying! Get out the coaching and motivation books guys!

  6. Why do the knives always come out for Banks. He is the only midfielder that looks for anything other than a square or backwards pass. Also the only one who even considers taking a shot at goal.

The boo boys have a new target this season, when the rest of the midfield on Saturday, Rob included, were inept. I a decent challenging midfield, Banks would be a play maker but in Latic's team he has to try and be everything and gets the horrendous stick for it fro supposed Latics fans. Give the poor guy a break and perhaps select some team mates to help out in midfield? Let's hope Green is fit soon as the three of Banks, Green and Gardner should be able to do better? May even allow Ryan to stay on the wing but please Shez, one winger not two, when we are so pushed in the middle.

Let's hope for a sunny day (football wise) at the seaside.

I'm up for this game (Literally and metaphorically) and will give 100% support all game.

Whatever team is picked will get my backing. Let's hope the players are up for this and step up for this.

    ? please...

Totally agree. Let Shez pick the team and then support. I would however hope to see McLaughlin playing on the right so that we at least get some crosses into the box, without him having to check back, to see if AAH and Davies can get on the end of them. 2 or 3 shots a game is never going to win anything. Come on you bliues! If not, move on to plan B, if there is one?

The bit that got me was, other than Mclaughlin at times, not a single other player was near the strikers (or their box for that matter) who had numerous knock downs/tussles which defenders had poor clearances. There was absolutely no pressure on the second balls lumped up to the strikers. That for me should have been Banks, but apparently he was deeper so therefore should have been Fane/Green (who is far too old to do that role).

Spot on and as we all (should) admit, there is only Banks who has any idea of how to shoot when near goal. We saw examples of Fane, Green from in the 6 yard box and others, so I agree, why is Green the farthest forward when he would be better deployed in front of the back four?

  9. It seems a case of selecting players to do what they are best at for the moment. McLaughlin is a good right winger with pace and ability to beat a defender, so why play him on the left of a diamond? We two big guys up front so they should be in the middle for crosses from McL rather than Amadi having to play right wing because no-one else does.

Fane and Green are good at pressing and tackling but not distribution and Banks is probably the best distributor of a ball that we have in the team. He is not Green or Fane, so why does he play in front of the back four. All it means is that they all get stick for being poor at what they are asked to do rather than be testing the opposition with what they are best at.

Only my opinion but it has been the same in all the friendlies and on Saturday. A team which has two strikers and no crosses other than diagonal punts up the pitch from the defence.

Hope it gets sorted v Burton.

  10. Agreed. Taylor (aka I don't ever tackle midfielder) is not the answer, We need to get McLaughlin on the right wing (not left) so that we can actually hit the by-line and give our two strikers something to attack. It was that bad on Saturday that Amadi ended up having to make the crosses as we so stuck in in the long ball and playing up the centre.

Then at least we can judge if our strikers can play.

  11. Fane is a Latics player and it takes all sorts to make a good team. He shames some of his more illustrious previous team mates (Wimpchester, Taylor) with his works rate for the team, tackling, harrying and stamina for covering the pitch for the "whole" game. He's not naturally gifted with silky skills but a team needs both if it is to survive at any league level. Only Green really matches him for breaking up play but he runs out of steam in the later stages. Like to see him shoot more (better than Bower Fold please). :)Keep up the good work Ousie

couldn't play against his parent club

Know that guys, but was more making the point of how much better that side of the team functioned against Bolton without him. Bolton fans told me I would be disappointed with Taylor's return and they were right?
