Westminster City Council has deposits totalling £17 million in two Icelandic banks while Kent County Council confirmed it has a whopping £50 million deposited. Elsewhere, Transport for London says it has £40 million deposited with Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander, which has been placed into administration. The Metropolitan Police Authority says it has £30 million invested, while Sussex Police Authority has £6.8 million, West Yorkshire Police Authority has £6 million and Dorset Police Authority has £7 million. The LGA is expected to release a list of all councils exposed. I have been told that if you ever let your assets get frozen, you are no longer able to make deposits on your sheets, even with laundered money. I am very much the rate tart, but as long ago as March the stuff I was reading about Icelandic banks had me avoiding them, despite impressive interest rates. I do find it slightly disturbing that councils, healthcare trusts, police forces, charities etc handling a damn site more than my piffling savings have no financial nouse. I also find it extraordinary that these organisations, that spend our taxes and donations, and are always crying poverty, have over £1bn stuck away in a remote corner of the North Atlantic and can then say "it's ok, we've got other money and this is only a tiny sum". Perhaps it's time for our councils (nationally) to spend less and cut council taxes significantly if they have these sums tucked away. While sympathetic to the plight of the charities, I do think their finance people should have been more on the ball.
