Strikers

Recommended Posts

Woke up early this morning, stressing about the credit crunch, job prospects, the family finances and yesterday's dreadful result against Yeovil.

Clearly the Yeovil situation is the priority to deal with first so Soccerbase.com got a visit and out came the Excel spreadhseet to try and do some number crunching.

What is going on with our strikers? We started the season with hundreds and now seem to have 2 of our own, an unfit bloke on loan and Wolfy.

So why has Davies left? Pace, skill, leading scorer last season etc. No goals in his last 12 games doesn't help his case though.

Anyway, I focused on 3 of our strikers: Hughes, Davies and Alessandra.

Here are some of the statistical outcomes from games they've played in (including substitute appearances). Note that the pts per game includes awarding points for cup results too.

INDIVIDUAL GOALS PER GAME:

LA 0.19; LH 0.38; CD 0.25

Hughes clearly most likely to hit the target - think we knew that. Alessandra needs to score more himself.

TEAM GOALS PER GAME WHERE THEY'VE PLAYED:

LA 1.72; LH 1.41; CD 1.25;

We are significantly more likely to score when Alessandra plays, but less likely to score with Davies on the pitch!

POINTS PER GAME WHERE THEY'VE PLAYED:

LA: 1.66; LH 1.49; CD 1.35;

We get more points when Alessandra plays and least points if Davies is on the pitch.

WINS PER GAME:

LA 0.47; LH 0.38; CD 0.35

Similar to the points stat.

STRIKE PAIR GOALS PER GAME WHERE BOTH PLAYERS HAVE BEEN ON THE PITCH:

LA/LH 0.63; LA/CD 0.35; CD/LH 0.51

Our strikers score more when Hughes and Alessandra play together.

TEAM GOALS PER GAME WHERE BOTH PLAYERS HAVE BEEN ON THE PITCH:

LA/LH 1.88; LA/CD 1.69; CD/LH 1.27

As a team we were far less likely to score when Hughes and Davies played together.

POINTS PER GAME WHERE BOTH PLAYERS HAVE BEEN ON THE PITCH:

LA/LH 1.69; LA/CD 1.44; CD/LH 1.50

Hughes and Alessandra get us most points when both appear.

WINS PER GAME:

LA/LH 0.44; LA/CD 0.38; CD/LH 0.37

We get fewest points when Davies and Hughes appear in the same game.

These stats, for me, explain why Davies isn't flavour of the month. The team scores more goals when Alessandra plays. The get more points when Alessandra plays. Hughes is more likely to score when Alessandra plays. It is clear, despite yesterday's bad day at the office, that the future is still Alessandra.

We should have scored 3 or 4 yesterday and had the game wrapped up before it went tits up. On another day we would have done.

So, first name on the team sheet is Lewis Alessandra. Which striker plays alongside him?
