MDI-OAFC
May's issue of FourFourTwo, with a rather interesting look at Capello's preperation for SA, said in it's League One round up that: Oldham fans will have double reason to cheer on England at this summer's World Cup following the announcement that the club will fully reimburse all season-tickets if they win in South Africa. 'This is a great way for our fans to back England to win the World Cup for the first time in 44 years', says spokesman Guy Walker. Now bearing in mind that this issue of FourFourTwo will have been written and finished towards the end of March before being released at the start of April, has anyone else heard this? And if so has anybody else heard of Guy Walker? There is also an interview with Dean Furman for those interested. You were born in Cape Town wern't you? My family is of Jewish descent and one of my grandparents fled to South Africa during the war from Poland. I didn't live there long though - my family moved to England when I was five. But you soon made a name for yourself as a good sportsman... I joined Chelsea at nine after being spotted playing for my local Sunday side. I also played tennis to a decent level and was ranked in the top 30 in the country for my age group. Did you face any future stars? I didn't come up against Andy Murray, although one lad i played a lot with, James Ward, is now ranked in the top 200 in the world and starting to make a name for himself. You must have had a hard job choosing between the sports... Yeah, but at 13 I thought I had a better chance of making it in football, because tennis is so hard to establish yourself in. I went on to sign YTS forms for Chelsea shortly after, so I made the right decision. I do still like to have a game of tennis whenever I can! Did you take on former tennis star-turned-footballer Michael Boulding durnig your spell at Bradford last season? No - Mickey ran scared! Perhaps he thought because I'm younger, I'd give him the run-around! Seriously though, it was probably lucky for me, because he was ATP ranked and would have given me a thrashing. Do you play against any of your current team-mates? Not yet, although we have recently signed Jason Price from Millwall who fancies himself as a bit of a player. I've asked for a game, but he hasn't put his money where his mouth is yet! Back to football. You're now establishing yourself after a spell with Rangers... After leaving Chelsea I was lucky to join Rangers, and having done well on my debut I thought I was in for a big season. But they went and signed Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis, so I went on loan last season instead. You joined Oldham in the summer, and seem to have really settled in... I'm loving it here. We've got some real characters at the club, and a great blend of youth and experience. Our skipper Sean Gregan has been around the game for ages and has been excellent with his advice and help to the younger lads like myself. Bring Back Ronnie Moore
See here: http://www.oldhamathletic.co.uk/page/Seaso...2019489,00.html These cash reductions and additional benefits have resulted in Latics cancelling their plans to refund season-ticket holders their money if England win the 2010 World Cup. The Club Directors have reviewed this after taking into account feedback from supporters. "We have listened to supporters. We have had a number of e-mails from fans saying that the World Cup offer was not attractive to them and they would rather have a guaranteed cash discount," said Latics Chief Executive Alan Hardy.
