Utah Driving Holiday

Having rather enjoyed driving around South West USA in a 2,500 mile circle in October we have booked flights for a similar trip this summer. Business class seats out of Dublin were only slightly more expensive than cattle class, so worth a look if you want to do similar (BA sale ends soon).

Expedia, Virgin Holidays and other booking agents available via the PlayerShare WebShop.

If anybody has any suggestions or ideas on where to visit please let me know. Current outline sketch route is:

Vegas

Death Valley

Mammoth Lakes

Lake Tahoe

Wendover and salt flats

Salt Lake City

Arches

Mesa Verde

Grand Canyon North Rim

Zion

We're in Vegas 11-22 June. Love the place!

We've done the top 3. Vegas and Death Valley poles apart but vast and both beautiful in their own way.

Liked Mammoth but it's smallish but quaint and picturesque with snow capped mountains and waterfalls.

Not done the others but a friend will be doing this summer!

We were due to stay in Kanab on the north rim when we went and had to cancel as it's not open all year round and didn't open until the day we were due to leave after a 3 day stay. Oops.

We tried to organise a driving trip from Boston, South west down through to Washington with a couple of stop-overs, then west a bit and North through Indianapolis, Great Lakes, Chicago, and then a few days in Vegas. Would've taken in 17 states.

After spending weeks coming up with a workable itinerary, we couldn't make it work with the flights to suit our budget/my peculiarities about having too many connections.

So we just booked Vegas for 10 days, in a sulk.

We spent a lot of time in casinos last time but that was only 4 nights. So this time I'm sure there'll be some of that but we're researching other stuff to do like a MiL baseball game, atomic testing museum, pinball museum, neon graveyard, have a nosy at the university campus, red rock canyon/valley of fire. No interest in seeing a 'show' really. These are the things that will hopefully stem the addiction a little. We have to be strict with ourselves too! Limit it and stick to it.

I'd be getting a car and staying overnight in Death Valley star gazing.

Loved that place.

Just googled the drive from Lake Tahoe to Salt Lake City. That looks like one boring road!

Done: Vegas, Death Valley, Mammoth Lakes, Lake Tahoe, I80 Nevada the most boring highway ever, Wendover, Salt Lake City, Orem, Moab, Arches, Canyonlands.

To do: Mesa Verde, Four Corners, Monument Valley, Kayenta, Grand Canyon North, Kanab, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, St George Dinosaurs and back to Vegas.

BA/US Airways messed up a flight; The Flamingo took 69 minutes to check into; Avis supplied us with a cracking SUV that ran out of oil (Walmart change oil!) - but we carry on!
