  1. Maybe. As we saw with England, it is about pairings and not necessarily the best individuals.

What we have been missing all Season is a reliable and well matched pair of Centre Backs. I think that Gregan and Hazell played well together yesterday and the combination will probably get better the more games they play as a partnership.

I was very impressed with Hazell yesterday.

So was I. Thought he played very steadily and covered well for the back line when required. Gregan is the club captain and has his own column in the programme. He should be allowed to express his thoughts and if we don't like it we can reply through such areas as this forum. I am sure that some of the players read it to see how we are feeling. With regard to Hazell, I heard he hadn't played for over a month prior to Satdi. Is this true? if it is then he played very very well Satdi...

  2. Been thinking about this for a few seasons now... BP seems to be getting quieter each week.

Now, unfortunately I don't have a season ticket this season due to being far away but on the radio the away fans do make more noise (no excuses about the accustics cos the commentary people are in the Oldham stand).

The away games were always better - True fans, compacted together and singing since lunchtime.

I've come up with a few analogies and I think they work...

    If I went to a stand-up show and the comedian wasn't funny - I wouldn't laugh.

If I went to a concert and the people couldn' sing, dance or look attractive - I wouldn't clap.

If I went to the fair and the rides didn't work - I wouldn't have fun.

If I went to a circus and the clowns didn't get themselves peed wet through - I wouldn't be impressed.

If I went to a football match and the football was dire - I wouldn't cheer.

There's no chicken and the egg about it - I've paid my money - I would expect the best - If they serve up crap then I wouldn't cheer.

I guess maybe the first thing we can do about it is to cheer the players names at the start. 'Before' they start to do anything... This may then provide a bit of confidence, personal inspiration or whatever. However, as long as we play poorly BP will remain the quietest ground in England.

That is precisely what I said. I expect to be entertained. I am a season ticket holder and sit amongst the grumpy old farts in the main stand. I have served my apprenticeship in the open ended RRE singing and chanting with the best of them. I graduated to the Chaddy Road end where I continued the singing and chanting until we became all seating. I now feel that its for the team to enthuse and excite me. I will give them the response they deserve. You don't sit in a restaurant and tip the waitress before she serves you. You wait until he/she has earned it, don't you... I cheer every name as its announced (even Thompson) and expect the team to earn anything above this.

  3. So, in spite of the roof, the Chaddy Enders could be heard in the RRE and it was tremendous. Let that be the end of the accoustics debate. :zigga:

It must be hard to sing with your head in your hands. :D

Please use the Crewe game to warm up your voice. Otherwise you might strain your throat if you try too hard against Leeds.

No thats not what I said. I said that the roof in the Chaddy End stops some of the sound, We used to get 11,000 when we were in Div 4 and most of them stood in the Chaddy end. They made some noise, and they used to run football special buses from't town centre The RRE is better for singing and chanting Full stop... Are you really saying that 300 Southend fans were singing louder than all the so called chaddie enders!!! I sit in the main stand and what I meant when I said that it doesn't affect me was that we can hear the RRE loud and clear and the Chaddy end is muted.... We, as a group, sing, (yes even approaching 50 years old and barely computer literate) chant and slag the referee off just as much as you Enders. I say again. It's up to the team to get us old farts excited enough to remember the songs!!!! How does it go, Zigga Zagga ??????

  4. We have had the discussion ad nauseum about the RRE v the Chaddy End on the subject of accoustics. The RRE having better accoustics is an urban myth, and I don't want to keep going over old ground.

I can understand younger fans being prepared to believe that if we changed ends everything would be deafeningly fantastic. however, I'm amazed that someone who has kept the Faith for over 40 years and has sat in the Main Stand for the past twenty years believes the myth. When you used to stand with your Dad when it was for home fans, can you honestly tell me that you could not hear that fantastic noise coming from the Chaddy. The 'Zigga Zagga' chant and all the old favourites - are you saying you were unaware of what was being sung in the Chaddy?

Of course Leeds will make a fantastic noise in October, because at least 90% of their 4,600 fans will sing their hearts out for thir lads. if we went to Old Trafford, our 3,000 would outsing their 73,000, because we would be just the same as the Leeds fans will be at BP.

You say it doesn't affect you because you sit in the Main Stand. By that do you mean that the Main Standers don't have the problem

because they all sing, or do you mean it's only the responsibility of the Chaddy Enders to sing.

Yes it's great to be entertained and respond by singing, but there are times when we're being outplayed, but the fans' repetitive chanting of 'John Sjeridan's Blue and White Army' for up to five minutes has inspired the players and the goal scored has been definitely "assisted" by the fans. It's an amazing feeling to be involved in something like that.

The fans of those clubs recognised as the best singers - Liverpool, Celtic, Portsmouth, West Ham - are prepared to sing regardless of whether everything is rosy on the pitch. Those of us who repeatedly try to get people to respond to the manager's and players' requests for the fans to make some noise and be worth a goal to the team, know that we are fighting a losing battle, but regardless of criticism, we'll continue to try to get things going. The very fact that it is the Chaddy End which is regarded as the singers' home proves that those singers can be heard throughout the ground, IF enough people are prepared to sing.

Many fans who used to lead the singing now keep quiet. Whether it's because they feel they've outgrown it and it's a thing for young fans I don't know. Their wealth of knowledge of songs and ability to lead the singing is badly missed at the moment.

Let's get back to all singing from the same sheet.

    Hello Diego

I did hear the singing from the Chaddy Road when I was a lad and it was tremendous. It would have been even better if the slope of the chaddy roof hadn't been there. It is a simple matter of physics. I dont think it is the responsibility of the Chaddy enders to sing and theirs alone. I did say that it was up to the team to inspire us just as much as it is our responsibility to inspire them. However I will repeat that I've paid to watch them and it is therefore their job to entertain me and the 5,000 other fans who turned up on Saturday. This they are not doing. When I'm sat with my head in my hands in frustration it is a little hard to get enthusiastic. We should be burying teams like Southend and Carlisle, home and away. Just you watch, when LUFC come in October we'll probably play them off the park. You'll hear me singing then!!!

    Rummy.

Hi Rummy. Already did the above and posted it yesterday..

  6. Isn’t the sheer fact that we have a message board in the first place so that we can discuss each other’s opinions on the latics?

I don’t agree in what people vote for, but it’s far from pathetic to start a poll in the first place.

It’s like a mini democracy, I am just gauging fans opinions from their responses / votes, if you feel this post is beneath you then the answer is simple don’t post in it!

Everyone who’s viewed and voted doesn’t seem to think so, or are they the “prats” you refer too?

It’s on the mind of every Latic fan, ‘what’s wrong and how do we fix it?’

Here here. This is where we discuss football issues isn't it. If someone wants to ask questions through a poll them leave them to it. It does not make them a prat just because they don't fit around your views. I personally think Sheridan is no more than a journeyman coach. In the last two matches I have seen him slagging Davies off when he made a mistake rather than encouraging the young man who, after all, is just starting to make his way in football really. Davies is the best forward we have and needs to be encouraged not discouraged...

  7. No lid on the stand, couldnt generate sound.

Same at Blackpool and i was drinking on the train on the way in.

I am new to this board but have been a latics supporter for over 40 years. I go to Boundary Park to be entertained because I love football and I love my home town team. I expect them to do the entertaining, not the crowd... It is as a consequence of their talent and play that the crowd get excited and start to sing and chant. Not the other way round . When you serve up rubbish you get complaints. Simple as that. The fans way of complaining is to fall silent and lose interest. Another problem is the design of the home and away stands. The Rochdale Road end makes for better accoustics so 300 Southend supporters sounded louder than 1000 home fans. CHANGE ENDS. I used to stand in the Rochdale Road end with my Dad when it was for home fans. The club has asked the fans to swap but for their own reasons they have declined the opportunity. I sit in the main stand and have done so for the past 20years so it doesn't affect me. Can you imagine how loud the Leeds fans will sound in October. It will sound as though they are at home. I'm sure the Chaddy Enders try their best but the roof on that stand drowns them out!!!
