  1. Our local MP and the Government "Floods Minister" (do we still have a Minister for Drought ?) compares the prospect of Norfolk flooding with Latics winning the European Cup. On the basis that everything the Government says is generally way off the mark, we could all be off to the continent in twelve months, and if you live in Norfolk you'd better get yourself a canoe !

Right Honourable Gentleman is a complete knobhead. Remember his election pamphlets proclaiming himself as a Man United fan................knob

  2. I don't think the club are expecting any deals being done in the near future. I saw Hardy and Hill flying out from Manchester Airport on Saturday, think the chief exec needs to be about sign sort the contracts out etc.

So why would they be flying out together ???? Off to Euros to sign someone......

  3. It is still great to watch, I mean Citeh believing they had done, Law being an ex scummer and the fact that it happened.

Where were you when City sent United down ? (or they thought they did )

Well I was at Bootham Crescent York in a full house watching a 1-1 draw and a last minute Maurice Whittle equaliser. :)

  4. Iv'e seen some good Latics debuts in my time, Bobby Johnstone being the highlight.

but the one I remember the most was in the 1960s when young Irishman called Tony Foster made a magnificent league debut, unfortunately he never repeated that performance and I believe returned home after a few matches.

Who made the best Latics debut in your opinion ?

Tony Fosters was in a 4-0 win if I remember right. Cannot remember who against. I think Ian Towers scored 2 or 3 that day.

You surely must remember Alan Mcneills against Aldershot ??????

David Shaws on his return from WBA was something too...Hat trick in first 15 minutes against Southampton.

  5. Was watching 'The Big Match - replayed' on ITV4 earlier today, one of the main games was Watford v Villa from February 1983. Jobbo was playing for the Hornets...............on the left wing AND beating players for fun, with great skill and sticking crosses over, even getting to the by-line a few times!!! No wonder he was such a cultured centre-back! It also answers where the hell his stunning turn and pass in the oppos box at the Manor Ground vs Oxford in the League Cup in '94 came from to set up Stitch's leveller.

Best centre half at Latics was Allan Hunter by a mile...could even play in goal and would have played there for almost any team. Jobson was good and when he signed I said he was the final piece in the jigsaw..which proved to be the case. Hunter though was terrific and hard also. I remember Jobson being given

the runaround by John Fashanu. Fash dragged him all over the pitch to make room for his strike partner whose name escapes me at the minute. The bloke who played for Bolton later and who screwed the page 3 chick with the big uns.

  6. I remember a spot the ball comp in the newspaper, where the picture used was from the Division two game against ManUre at BP. The back drop was a full RRE, that was prior to it being reduced in size. It must have held a boat load of people, anyone actually know what the capacity used to be?.

Best memory I have is 15000 REDS getting wet through and Mo Whittle scoring the penalty. Tee hee soaked to the skin they were

  7. I agree with a lot of what you have said, especially the bit about the kids. I go to watch my nephew, he's 7 years old and the way some of the coaches and parents behave makes me very sad, they are pushing the kids too hard, telling them to dive, telling them to push other players, screaming their heads off at them when they do something wrong and how rubbish they are if they loose. It doesn't paint a very nice picture for the future of football.

I will always go and watch latics though, sometimes its out of habbit than anything else though, but then something always happens to re-ignite my enthusiasm like at Leeds a few weeks ago.

The game is changing, not really for the better in my opinion but unnfortunately us the fans can't do anything about it. Its all money now and i wouldnt be surprised that within the next couple of years a league club will go out of business which will be the start of a very slippery slope which will see quite a few clubs follow

I bet most of these "parents" are plastic reds

  8. I first began watching football in 1986, the year of the Challenger disaster, Andy and Fergie's wedding and the year we went down under to win the Ashes. It was also the year I watched my first full game, Liverpool v Everton - The FA Cup Final, later that year I marvelled at Maradona's skills (and fist) single handedly (touche) winning the Argies the world cup in Mexico. Gary Lineker was my new hero, along with Neville Southall and Peter Shilton (with me being a goalie).

In November of that year after a great deal of whigeing and mithering I convinced my owd fella to take me to my first live game, Latics v Palace, we won 1-0 and from then on I was hooked. Over the years I have seen pretty much everything, Promotion, Relegation (twice), A cup final, Semi-Finals, Giant Killings (for and against), managers come and go, in short the sublime, the good, the bad, the ridiculous and downright crap!

In 1992 Sky's revolution dawned and for me it is clear to see that this bloodless coup has seen the slow death of the game I love. On the plus side we have shiny new grounds and some of the best foreign players in the world gracing our shores. The football League is more competitive than ever, yet many of the players have forgotten just what a great and noble game football is. Nowadays the players want everything at once and are only in the game for fame and money. Very few, play for the grassroots love of the game. This psyche is even dripfeeding its way down into kids football. Everything the so called 'superstars' do is copied by youngsters including abusing referees, questioning every decison and a lack of respect for their opponents. More worryingly is the big time attitude of if i'm not good enough for United, Chelsea etc.. i'm quitting and believe me this happens on a massive scale. Park football is dying a slow lingering death in our town and all over the country as SKY deliberately schedules lunchtime games to coincide with traditional kick off times. In fact our national team just couldn't be arsed in putting in the necessary effort to qualify from a very average group. Money is king in football and sooner or later the whole damn house of cards will come crashing down.

What i'm getting at is the fact even third rate players have the attitude that they are too good to actually go and play for teams lower down the leagues. they are content to earn their money for very little application. If we cannot improve the product on the pitch for the real fans lower down the leagues, then why the hell do we bother? We all need something to aspire to, a right to cling on to dreams of promotion or one day it will all fall into place. At the moment despite the possible realisation of shiny new grounds if players don't want to be part of that what hope do we or other small clubs have?

I'm feeling very disillusioned tonight, perhaps even weary of having my hopes dashed time and time again. Every time you think this club is going places circumstances transpire to make it take three steps back. I bleed blue and will cheer myself hoarse tomorrow as I do every week but the club I identify myself with is slowly losing its attraction, a team of new players EVERY season is not what I want to see. I want progress to be built on. Sadly making do, is not enough for me anymore. In 2003 my club nearly died, in 2008 on the field in terms of League position we are no better off. In fact if you go back to January 1998 we are no better.

As usual many will reply with go and support United etc... well I'd rather stop watching football altogether. Its not just Latics and our continued footballing stagnation that grates its the state of the game in general that feeds my disillusionment. Over the last couple of years I have further established my love of cricket and Rugby League, two sports where the players give their all for the LOVE of the game, not so they can drive flash cars, or hang out with young girls who put out at the first sign of a £50 note. Football for me is in a coma and this summer i'm going to have a lot of thinking to do as to whether I pull the plug completely, as someone who lives for the game i'm gutted to say that.........

You my friend are spot on. Been like that with me for a few years. Consolation for me is that we are not in the Euros. A prima donna free summer :)

  9. The manager when I first started watching in 1960 and the architect of the revival that saw us move out of perennially near the bottom of Div 4 to promotion with an average home gate of 14000.

Brought some very astute signings to the club - the star was Bobby Johnstone of course, but others like Bert Lister, Ken Branagan, Alan Williams, Jimmy Frizzell, Johnny Colquhoun - and they not only won promotion in 1963 but gave Liverpool a fright in the Cup in 1962 in front of 41733 at Boundary Park.

Fell out with the directors and went to coach at Ajax! Returned in late 60s but didn't have the same success. Ran a newsagents in Shaw for a while.

Always approachable and had a massive influence on the history of the club. Without his excellent management from 1960-63 the Latics may have gone out of the league.

    Brother of the legendary Arthur.

He blotted his copybook second time around. Took us to the bottom of Div 4....knocked out of cup by SouthShields...beaten 8-1 at Peterboro.....

Oh and for good measure he signed the legend that was David Down

  10. If everything goes according to their plans then you must be correct and they'll deserve nothing less than the Freedom of the Borough!

On the playing side, Bobby Johnstone was the man who put bums on seats - he transformed BP attendances in the early 1960s. Bernard Halford, the Club's Assistant Secretary at the time, is reported to have recalled, "He transformed the club, no doubt about that. He had the crowds flocking down Sheepfoot Lane, even though Athletic had dropped into the Fourth Division. I think it was the only period in my life when I regularly told lies. On match days the phone never stopped ringing. ‘Is Johnstone playing?’ Bobby might have been sitting in my office with his ankle in plaster, but I had to say he was playing, otherwise the fans wouldn’t have turned up. It really was as cut and dried as that."

I saw him play for Citeh when he was at his peak, and he is the best ever Latics' player seen in my lifetime. He was overweight when he joined us - his stomach seemed to start under his chin - I think it's known as 'barrel-chested'! He had no pace, but he was a brilliant footballer - he made the ball do the work. If Richie Wellens and Neil Kilkenny are supposed to be midfield generals, they would have given up the game in shame if they'd seen Bobby play - there is absolutely no comparison. He rarely wasted a ball and directed pin-point passes all over the field. His defence-splitting passes would bring gasps and applause from the crowd. He took free kicks and as he stood over the ball, he would start to engage the ref in a conversation while at the same time passing the ball to a team mate, with the opposition off-guard. You had to see it to understand. He was what was called a ball-artist - a term you don't hear very often these days.

His transfer fee from Hibs must be the best £4,000 the Club ever spent.

He could also score penalties off both posts intentionally

  11. We could do with another forward, one injury and we're knackered, no idea if he's good enough or not, especially if we're paying for him. the idea of cashing in on the Luton fire sale is good tho', but I would be more interested in Bell the winger and possibly Spring in midfield or even Goodall the left back.

ps the goalie's 'Brill' as well!

That Curran looks an ideal replacement for KK

  12. Someone call?? TBH promotion has all but gone imo. Even with KK the home form will hinder us all season until Shez comes up with Plan 'B' to break teams down such as Forest and Luton that came for a draw. Unless we strengthen markedly i'm more worried about the 8 point gap below us. Don't get me wrong we could sneak into the play offs but it'd take one helluva run and despite only 2 defeats in 15, the amount of draws we have failed to turn into wins has cost us.

This would be the Plan B that the Premiership class Kilkenny never came up with right ? Yard dogs and crosses from the wings is the answer

  13. Wasn't arguably our best ever side assembled on that basis? Henry and Milligan win it and give it Holden and Adams to do the biz. Agreed, not rocket science.

    KOTK

Have always thought we need to get back to yard dogs. Shez in Chron..we need guile !!! Well isnt that supposed to be coming from our on loan Premiership level playmaker ??
