  1. Like it or not, the income of "small" clubs today is significantly higher in real terms than it was in the 1970s and 1980s.

There are too many lower league footballers on very, very good money.

Yes, the gap to the Premiership has increased exponentially, but that is by no means the primary issue creating problems for the likes of Bury.

What I meant was Premier League clubs have become such large businesses that they are able to rake in cash the fodder - lower league clubs - could only dream of having. There are huge signings going on whilst Bury can't even afford the keep on its last legs.

Don't they also get funding from FC United?

  2. Okay, imagine this...

Latics either go up or stay down. Somewhere, far away, a businessman is in tears watching Johnson trying to sum up our last home loss in a positive light on LaticsPlayer. He glances at his Andy Ritchie poster and decides this is it: I'm buying Latics!

He buys us on the Sunday and Corney us on the kerb the following Monday morning. He makes City look like peasants with his bank balance and decides to invest loads into our club. New, big names arrive; the Chaddy End's roof is finally painted; our scoreboard works; and even a fourth stand is built!

Promotion, baby! Fans roll in from all across Greater Manchester, we go European and huge names like Andy Goram are playing for us.

So my question is this: would you still be the same Latics fan?

Obviously we'd still all be Latics fans, but would it still be the same for you? Would the sudden greatness not seem a little cheated? At the end of the day, football is about winning. But really like that? Or would you just not give a :censored: because we're doing well?

    Just a thought.

  3. He still is a racist though, hence taking days for someone even to announce his supposed beliefs on behalf of him.

You do realise he also had race issues at Swindon with a black player, right?

    Publicity stunts galore.

Don't know if it's my laptop, but I need a magnifying glass to read that.

Same. Had to paste it into Word to read it.

  4. GuyGermanLatic. You seem to be under the impression only white people in the town are racist. Try telling that to the friends and family of the white kid beaten to death for being white, with the police doing rock all about it because it would be racist to go to the pakistani community to find the culprits. There are racists on both sides and in equal measures. My firends daughters is mixed race and was forced to move house due to non stop verbal assaults and physical threats from the local pakistanis. The police did nothing, and in they end they were forced out.

What happened to you is a disgrace but do not tar us all with the same brush and do not pretend only the whites in this town are vile racist thugs.

By the way Oldham is a complete :censored:hole and their is no hiding from it. Oldham has gone downhill for 20 years.

I accept and know there are racists on both sides. I find the racism from Asians just as disgusting as it is from whites.

Oldham's problem is simple in my eyes. There are no jobs in a town that has over one hundred thousand people. We have young Asian lads growing up in areas with few prospects, and we have young white lads on council estates where neither parents nor grandparents have ever worked.

When people have nothing they will look for something to identity with, creed and culture, race or even an institution like Latics. Oldham is a giant melting pot with an awful lot of Asian and white nobheads without a focus.

This. Nail right on the head!

There would be no EDL if the police had dealt with the radical Muslims on the home-coming of the Royal Anglians!

Wanting the police to deal with people harming no-one because you don't agree with their beliefs. Haven't most fascist leaders done the very same?

    Ha.

  5. Out of curiosity, by who?

I looked over a few things with people interested in introducing something new. They liked that are wanted to try it. Beats the huddle :censored:e.

Yeah. Went in the Rapid Vienna away end at derby at Austria Vienna a few years ago. Stood and bounced on temporary stands and made a noise akin to the songs! Quite enjoyed it. But not a fan if the cheerleaders at front

And they seemed most interests and alarmed when I took to kissing my Latics pin badge ( no ready btw but freaked a few out in the tram home as well!- before scary owl!). Oddly happened to be at return match same season and joined the Austria Vienna away fans..... Great pre match entertainment laid on outside to diffuse the tension. Beer tents, food and oompah band! Can see that in smear park!!

Rayo Vallecano in Madrid have small yet noisy contingent and plenty of flags and colour and it works.

Good luck. Anything has to be better .

Respect. The idea of you singing along to the songs is brilliant!

I don't understand why England can't pull something similar off. FC United and Crystal Palace have come close but... It's not quite there.

  6. UKIP better then the 3 main ones especially Labour. who wants mass immigration then?

UKIP is awful; it shows how blind people in Britain are to give it so much support. They're nothing more than Tories jumping on the immigration bandwagon to rear in swing voters.

Why do people support that :censored:e?

I'd be surprised if it lasts but each to their own.

Please please please though don't encourage people singing German type songs. I'm all for a better atmosphere at BP (and that will come as the result of success on the pitch bringing in more people therefore louder terraces and not through a facebook group) but the orchestrated :censored: that may work on the continent is not in line with British terrace culture.

I used to enjoy going to watch Palace. Went the other month in the Holmesdale and the area that used to have a good atmosphere is now led by two or three blokes at the bottom not watching the game, orchestrating songs which essentially have no words. They sang all game and there were a lot of people in that section, but it was awful.

No, we want to work with what we've got, so to speak. Just add a bit of flavour to it.

Speaking of Palace, didn't they have something like this (or they still do)? Remember a decent picture being posted on here when I brought it up in the past. Shame that you say it was awful but hey, each to their own.

    Worth a shot.

  7. How to handle race issues. It's a tough one.

Part of me thinks highlighting dicks like the EDL, Combat 18 etc creates issues. Ignore them and they tend to disappear to another town.

My recollection of 2001 is outsiders (Birmingham, Stoke) bussing into town to stir the :censored: when there wasn't much :censored: there to start with.

That is doubtless over-simplifying a more complex issue.

As for the BNP they've made noise in Oldham. Yet Oldhamers have NEVER elected one of their candidates to the council, let alone Parliament.

I think the person who finds the solution to it all will be a very rich man.

All what you've said is right though. It's just nice to acknowledge the problem, say "Look, we're against this" and try to see if we can get rid of the barriers. Problem is I'm not really sure if people are even willing to actually acknowledge it.

  8. I'm pessimistic? You're the one who bangs on about the state of the town and its inhabitants. What happened to you and your Mrs is bang out of order but I wouldn't have thought that's the norm. We've more than our fair share of herberts but, per head, I wouldn't have thought there's more violent racism than most places in the country.

Along with your new left brigade you seem intent on perpetuating the notion Oldham's a Nazi infested :censored:hole when, like many other places, its got a lot of problems but the people are mainly good.

I'm organising fans to better the club and town - I don't even live in England, let alone Oldham! So please don't turn the pessimism on me. This a club where its own fans singing "OIdham's a :censored:hole, we already know" and the rest laugh along. Consider that.

Understandable on that and cheers (seriously, it's nice to know there are good people). But I'm not implying that is the norm but rather that it isn't uncommon - which is a problem - especially in a town with such a beautiful history as ours and has a very large ethnic mix-up. That documentary which every man and his dog's seen shows the guy talking about how Combat 18 were and are involved with Oldham Athletic. Do you know who Combat 18 are?

And I know you'll think "Oh yeah, like we're still involved with them" or, as you said, mention that Oldham is a "Nazi-infested :censored:hole" but that's what people think! Welcome to the age of the modern media! Maybe not to the extent of being infested with Nazis, but our town is seen a "racist :censored:hole" - I even know both Asian and white people who would more than agree with me. I'm sorry if this is hard for you to accept. We've had the EDL here, the BNP getting a decent vote count in Shaw, some ex-armed forces guys saying "Islam should be smashed" and calling all Muslims "paedophiles" in front the church next to Spindles and we've had the 2001 riots, which will never go away. I'm not some apologist for all of this crap, but look at Oldham. Look at what Oldham really is - at both the white and Asian communities. Many people I know are extremely racist - even Oldham fans. But, of course, closed doors keep loud sounds muffled.

Please explain to me why you believe this a leftist group.

Like you're getting at though, there are some great people in Oldham. I'd just like there to be more.

  9. Refused to go "because Oldham was full of violent racists"? I assume she didn't venture out in the the town either then? Surely you corrected her?

That's 2 posts of yours I've just had a pop at and don't take it personally but I think you're talking bollocks.

We had "Paki shagger" shouted at us a lot. Group of lads cornered me once about it too. Plus look at our history and the fact the divide between the Asian and white communities is still there.

You just read an article from the :censored:ing BBC about it and find me hard to believe... What the :censored:?!

    I think you're a pessimistic, non-bollocks disbeliever.

  10. You gonna be handing out Socialist Worker Party manifestos to young kids? Trying to create an atmosphere is one thing but this is very much your baby. Whatever my political allegiances are, this is just too try hard.

    We're not Saint Pauli

It is something I've helped craft into a very different image - but only with consent from the others. Don't get me wrong, we're all for anti-racism, making a scene and the rest, but this isn't a political demonstration or an attempt to change anybody's views.

As NewBlue said above, do you think half of the people in this will be even aware of right/left? We just want a set of like-minded fans wanting to make the atmosphere, reputation of the club and experience of watching matches better.

Plus this is focused on one group, not the entire fans. If you don't associate with it then why such the fuss? All we've asked of people is to bring a scarf or a friend.

All I would say is that sadly our vocal support has reduced in recent years and it will take a lot of effort to turn that around. It will not be done in one game and so if you are serious about this you will have to stick at it. I remember something similar to this last season and it seemed to die off after a couple of weeks. It is also important to remember that not everyone wants to sing so please respect their views. If you make a good atmosphere more and more people will join in, they will not have to be pursuaded to do so. Get a decent number of likeminded lads together and you will soon have many more.

Agreed and we'll take that in.

This is why we're deeming it nothing more than just a "debut." We're already facing one or two problems with the drummer so we'll have to see where it goes.

We also want to make it clear where we'll be sitting so that if fans don't want a drum being whacked down their ear for 90 minutes they can keep clear of us.

Let's see how Monday goes first.

  11. Shoddy article which makes us look :censored:e. I still think there's a problem but it's nothing like it was.

It was great to see the Asian fans at Latics though and made me feel really proud to be a Latics fan which can attract the town - despite having to get to the 4th and 5th round of the FA Cup to do it.

There is change in the air though...

My wife is Bangladeshi so I have a fair amount of contact with her side of the family, even taken a few of the kids to latics games on occasions. They all support Utd or Liverpool though. The main reason us they'd sooner support a top club then their local one. I just don't think they have the same connection to the town that they live in.

They look upon themselves as Bangladeshi's rather than Oldhamers, for example if a Bangladeshi team came over to play a match I think you would find quite a few that would attend. This is just my impression I get when speaking to my wife's family members on the subject. I also usually get met with surprise when I say I support Oldham, comments such as "why do u support them, they're rubbish" kind of sums it up for me.

I can completely understand where you're coming from.

My ex-girlfriend was Pakistani-American. We'd watch football together and she'd really get into it. She knew I was a massive Latics fan but refused to go on the premise that Oldham was full of violent racists. She just felt really uncomfortable with the idea entirely.

Like you were getting at though, if there was a factor which changed it slightly it might've been a different story. I don't think Latics playing against a Bangladeshi team would do any good: if you want to win allies, it's best not to call them your enemy first (bit harsh terminology but I think it'd drawn out like that).

  12. I firstly want to start by giving the fans a huge thank you for supporting us through Facebook, our new blog and in person. It's been brilliant!

Anyway, we plan on really kicking things off at Colchester. The article below is what has been written for the OA95 Ultras website in preparation for the Easter Monday game (come on, weather!) which I wanted to share with you all. The more who know the better it should be - fingers crossed.

With our ideology moving away from the hooliganism of the FYC, we want to bring in the anti-racist, fan-friendly atmosphere which is enjoyed across Europe and by several clubs in England.

This article is disappointing and really reflects one of the many things we want to change. Although this match will be our "debut," there's no limits as to where we can go with this and hope to truly transform the club.

Anti-racism, fan-friendly and a damn sight better than any club in the league!

For Lee Johnson it will be another chance to prove his place as the new Latics manager following the desperately needed 3-0 win against Hartlepool. But Monday will be much more important than any relegation battle for the fans: Easter Monday will be the debut of our very own ultras: OA95 Athleticos!

After organising the group, gaining support from other fans and lots of other work we're hoping to show Colchester what Oldham is made of. A new style of support is possible and we want to show that to English football this Easter. Oldham's reputation needs a boost and we plan on sending the Essex boys home having been out-done both on and off the pitch.

    stp+flag.jpg

A gift from friends in Hamburg

Our Athleticos banner will be at the game along with plenty of flags thanks to members of the group. Flags will be handed out to give the game a bit of colour and a nice sight to see instead of yellow jackets hassling our fans. We also urge fans to bring their own flags as well as scarves as we plan to rock the stand.

A small group of St. Pauli fans also gave us one of their flags after hearing of our cause against racism. 15 Euros worth of a flag, it'll be amongst the many flying at Boundary Park as a thank you for their support to our cause. Love Latics, hate racism!

Manager Lee Johnson mentioned the ground needs more support as well as hinting at a singing section. Why not bring it to him and show him how much we want it? That's exactly what we plan to do.

We urge all fans to get involved! Bring a flag, bring a scarf, bring a friend! Every little helps in our campaign to change the face of support at Oldham. Our event can also be found on Facebook. By getting involved you can be part of a beautiful change to the beautiful game.
