  1. WTF is going on here?

Lidds is the only player who can consistently deliver a decent cross which is backed up my his assists record the past few years. We missed him last year and it showed, having to play a whole host of central midfielders or strikers there. This year, with a full pre season, he's raring to go and I hope he starts.

    E4e

    ERNIE

Being a winger is all about being able to run fast apparently not providing a decent cross. And when our other players dont attack the balls that are put into the box thats Lids fault too. Basically everything that goes wrong is all down to Lids not being able to run very fast.

I love that everyone has been praising Shez for months about his new signings, the fairly decent pre-season we've had but then he says something they dont like and now he knows nothing about football and we should listen to the commentator not Shez about how well players have played

  2. I would think the offers are for Taylor, Eardley, Smalley and probably Davies. I wouldnt sell Eardley or Smalley i think they will both go on to play at a higher level, hopefully with us. I can't see why people think Lomax is as good as Eardley, Lomax is decent enough at this level but Eardley has so much more in his game. If we get a decent offer in for Davies i think they would be tempted to accept, we have cover in the squad now and have a couple more decent strikers coming through in the youth team i belieive. I wouldnt be devestated if we cashed in on Taylor, there just isnt enough end product from him for me - whether he be playing on the right or left. I think at least one player will definately be sold before the season starts will be interesting to see who they decide to let go.

  3. I agree with you gemma, however they are all even past thier best even at their time with latics in those seasons.... I think if you would have had Dux in the late nineties, or shez and lids when they first signed for us would have been a very interesting question... however in 02/03 & 08/09 respectively they are all unfortunately no where near their best at this club...

We all loved Dux... but not in 02/03..... and Lids was ok 2/3 years ago.... and as has been pointed out this is a question on a snapshot from said seasons, not as Latics players...

I know they were, thats what i just said, but as i have pointed out in my opinion i would still have those players in my team.

  4. I perfectly understand that thank you. I'd hedge a bet that all for of those players were over 35 in respective teams, hence my comment. At 02/03 Shez & dux were past thier best, as Liddell is now. None of these players were in the starting 11 in the respective seasons.

I think people are deluded to how good the 02/03 team was. The defence was great, good wing backs, and Wijnhard. The rest were decidedly average, but with the best fitness and work ethic ever seen at this club.

The team (and squad) would beat them - if they could match thier fitness.

Sheridan was always past his best when he was playing for, and Lids for that matter, thats why they were playing us. Lee Duxbury is my favourite ever latics player, even after seeing Roger Palmer, Earl Barrett and all the other greats from our 'glory years' so thats why i went for him, that season was his last and his legs had gone a bit but when he did play that season he was fantastic as Dowie numerous times that season.

  5. Each to their own but I am amazed that you would start with Andrews over Hughes Gemma. As soon as players learnt that they didn't need to bother fouling him when he was away he offered very little.

I didnt think Hughes and Wijnard would play very well together and i prefer Andrews over Davies (though i think he will improve this season) and i have only seen O'Grady play for us in one friendly so can't really form an opinion on him yet

Anyway as my team selection has gone down so well back to work for me!

  6. Bloody hell gemma, you like 'em old... that midfield belongs in a care home...

maybe at thier pomp that would have worked, but those 4 would let battered off the pitch on 08/09 & 02/03 teams.... only Eyresy would be anywhere near the team, even Shez by 02/03 needed to be carried....

... and i'm sorry, but even you have to admit that Liddell shouldnt even be a starter now, never mind one of the best 11 from the current squad and that team...

... and dont get me started on Wijnhard and Andrews up front!!! Wijnhard fit and firing may be there... but andrews wouldnt even get in our current squad!

As they were in 02/03 i would have them in before any of the others, though i wasn't sure between Shez and Murray or even a 5 in midfield but as i only thought about it for about 5 minutes to pass some time at work whilst listeneing to a customer complain on the phone to me i didnt really take it all that seriously, it was just a lighthearted post

The team i just put up it was a choice of Lids or Low and i have never rated Low, Lids is a ten times better player than Low in my opinion. As for Lids starting this season yes i do think he should start games, not all but some, he and Smalley are both good enough to and both bring different things to the team and i think its excellent that we have those two fighting for a starting spot. I think Lids will start more games than many people are expecting. We'll find out soon enough. What people forget, and someone mentioned it on another thread, when Lids player last season he (and others as well) was still putting decent balls into the box but no-one was getting on the end of them.

I quite liked Andrews and he has improved since he left us from what i've seen. Its all about opinions though isn't it, everyone has different ideas of who the best and worst players are

  7. Pogliacomi - Crossley

    Miskelly - Fleming

    Hill - Gregan

    Hall - Hazell

    Beharall - Stam

    Holden - Thompson

    Clegg - Eardley

    Armstrong - Lomax

    Haining

    D Sheridan - Allott

    J Sheridan - Lee

    Appleby - Maher

    Murray - Whitaker

    Low - Liddell

    Eyres - Taylor

    Baudet - Smalley

    Duxbury - Stephens

    Eyre

    Carss

    Corazzin - Hughes

    Andrews - Davies

    Killen - O'Grady

    Wijnhard - Alessandra

    Vernon

    My team would be

    Crossley

    Eardley Hall Hill Armstrong

    Liddell Duxbury J.Sheridan Eyres

    Wijnard Andrews

    bench

    Pogs

    Hughes

    Murray

    Smalley

    Gregan

  8. Assuming we don't sign anyone else and i'm only going off the game last night for our new signings i'd go for

    GK Crossley

    RB Eardley

    CB Gregan

    CB Stam

    LB Lomax

    RW Lids/Smalley

    CM Allott

    CM Maher

    LW Philips/Taylor

    CF Davies

    CF Hughes

    Bench:

    Fleming

    Hazell

    Lids/Smalley

    O'Grady

    Whitaker/Lee

I've gone for Davies and Hughes up front but i'm still not sure if they can forge a good partnership, Davies and O'Grady seemed to link up much better last night than when i've seen Davies and Hughes play up front together. At least we have a few decent players to choose from this season

  9. Anyone think its a disgrace that the club are charging for travel to the funeral, and they have not mentioned it being donated to Ernies fund. Don't think the club should be looking to make money from this.

i would think the money is just to cover the cost of the coach, i doubt they will be looking to make a profit from it

  10. taken from bbc 606 messageboard:

    "comment by gemma06

He has turned down an extension to his existing contract which runs out at the end of this coming season, if they offer decent money for him sell him, its silly losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

It was a month or two ago now. Can't blame him i suppose, he only has a few years left so he will want to play at the highest level he can and make the most money he can. If we get promoted this season i would think he will sign a new contract with us. A bit of loyalty would be nice, especially in this situation, but unnfortunately in football there is very little loyalty left. If he has a good first half of season with us i would expect a few offers for him in January from lower championship teams"

care to name your source as you seem so certain it happened??

If your referring to me i dont post on the bbc message boards

  11. £100k is NOT a reasonable offer though is it Gemma? Latics will invariably always be a selling club, but under no circumstances should we be selling at ridiculous knock down prices.

I dont think it is no but its down to the club to decide if we get an offer for him what they think is a decent price. They didnt make an offer and were only looking at him if he was available on a free so the £100k quoted in the paper was rubbish anyway.

  12. Absolute Joke if this (hopefully not) is true!

Shows the clubs ambition if this is allowed to happen and i will abandon the use of my season ticket having renewed it on the basis of having the likes of hughesy next season.

What if he leaves on a free at the end of the season, the club can't just keep losing money. As i said earlier it would be great if he stays but if we get a decent offer then i let him go and move on. We have other decent players and there are plenty of players available, none of our players are irreplaceable.

  13. I think that he is over rated by latics fans. Not saying he's a bad player at all, I'd much rather him be here this season. I'm saying it wouldn't be the disaster that some would make out.

Yeah we misssed the play offs, but Davies was out too.

Yeah he scored the goal that beat crewe, but 1 goaldoesn't make someone a world beater.

I do think my comments will be slightly twisted. I DO want him to stay, but if he goes - we are building a much healthier squad and can cope without a player who was injured / otherwise engaged for 2/3 of last season.

I agree, he's a decent enough player but he isn't the world beater some fans make out. If he stays then fantastic but he if doesn't the team will survive and i would still expect us to challenge for promotion next season

  14. Burnley have been holding interviews and auditions for club drummers to enhance the area which will be situated in blocks NU2 & NU3 of the Longside Upper. They're also setting up their own cheerleader group in the style of those in the U.S. as distinct from our Blue Crew dancing troupe.

Also over at Notlob, the "12th man" factor, which Gary Megson and his players are convinced played a major part in the battle for Greedy League survival, has prompted Wanderers to create a dedicated singing section at the Reebok.

Pretty soon there will be no hiding place from those who are anti. Singing and drumming has taken over from garlic bread as the future. :chubb:

I thought Burnley had decided against a drummer? I'm sure they did a poll and most people voted against so they decided not to have one

In fact they did - http://www.burnleyfootballclub.premiumtv.c...1297433,00.html

Have they changed their mind now? If so my mate whos a season ticket holder there will be less than impressed he hated ours when i dragged him to a couple of games last season

  15. always thought his goal at wembley against scotland was one of the best goals ever!!!

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/euro2008/2008/0...s_you_with.html

Theres a clip of it on the bbc, they had it as no.2 in an top ten goals in the euro's.

He was a fantastic player but he really needs some help now, he's been released from hospital again, i wonder how long until he ends up back there. The best football player i have ever seen

  16. I'm a bit of a D&G-er myself, but I will tell you one thing, if we get 700k for Taylor I will be absolutely delighted (and also think that the board are guilty of daylight robbery).

Seven hundred thousand pounds for him, anyone willing to offer silly money like that wants their bumps feeling. I seriously think it is about £650,000 over what he is worth. In fact, if a club was insane enough to bid six figures for him I would offer to go around and pack his bags myself.

I really don't see what the majority of people on this board see in the lad, left or right wing. Give me Smalley over Taylor every day of the week, quicker, better crosser, far better in the air, not a 'falling over feigning injury' prima-donna; and now he has broken his duck and scored in successive games I would expect him to continue in that vein of form that he had a youth and stiff levels and be a regular contributor of 10 goals plus a season.

Taylor is no great shakes in this division, a Josh Low at very best. Very ordinary and if it is true Blackpool have bid silly money then say ta-ta as quickly as possible I would say.

As for the thought of a bidding war for him - football really has gone mad!

    KtF,

    Derek.

I agree that Smalley has the potential to be the better player.

I'm not Taylors biggest fan but at this level he will cause defenders problems with his pace, i think if he moves up a division he will struggle though. He is a winger and he can't cross particularly well and if it was anyone other than Taylor then people would be booing him on a regular basis. He's quick and can run past a defender but there is hardly ever an end product, if he can improve on that then he will be an excellent player but i can't see that happening. He's a latics fan who tries hard and his pace makes him exciting to watch, thats why people like him, but i don't think he is going to improve anymore so if we get a decent offer then sell him so we can bring in a decent left winger and left back. The club will have an amount in mind - for all the players not just Taylor - and if anyone bids that much then they will be gone. If we do sell him then i don't think it will effect the team that much, we have plenty of cover on the right and with the money we get for him we should be able to bring in a decent left winger and maybe a young kid with potential as cover and we have Smalley/O'grady and probable Davies as well who can cover on the left.

  17. dont forget our blue 40 - or LDB senior - tells his lad to drum as loud as he can and sit where he wants, and then fecks off to the far corner of the chaddy ! priceless !. If he is so keen on LDB percussion skills, perhaps he should sit next to him and chaperone him at all times - perhaps he just might slightly change his views then - NIMBY !! priceless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So he doesn't like sitting next to the drum and so moves somewhere else where it won't be quite as loud, seems pretty sensible to me. If you don't want to be sat near a drum then move, just because some people don't like it doesn't mean it should be banned or they should be able to tell him where to sit. Some people don't like people standing up during a game but dare say anything to them (and im sure they include some people of here who keep moaning at the drummer) and all you get is a mouthful of abuse back. Not everyone is going to agree about everything, but the club say its ok for him to bring a drum next season and keep arguing about it isn't going to change that.

  18. Have we missed out chance to escape League 1?

Now, I’ve been wondering about this, and the transfer of Robert Earnshaw from Derby to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest made me create this thread. Anyway, I’m one of those who believe football has been ruined by money. The whole ruthless chairman act is spreading, the competition is just out of control, and the toughness of the EPL is ridiculous now. That, too, is spreading, I think.

Last year, Scunthorpe, Bristol City, and Blackpool all contested in the Championship, after winning promotion the season before. Sadly, only Scunthorpe returned to us. Instead, we were handed Colchester, who for some reason came down, and Leicester, a really big club. Season before last, we were given another mighty club, in the form of Leeds.

What I’m getting at is Swansea, Forest and Donny all have the money and the facilities, proven by the fact that Forest, riddled with debt, still will spend money. They have the real ability to all survive this year, and we could be handed another 3 decent Championship sides, maybe another with a status like Leeds or Leicester. Hopefully, though, Bristol City, Blackpool and Donny get relegated, as that wouldn’t be that bad.

League 1 is currently at its toughest, in my opinion. There’s money flying about, and for me it makes this division very unhealthy. Have we missed out chance to escape this division, when it was more open, didn’t have a load of big guns flying about, and was generally, well, easier. Obviously, we need the challenge, but there’s an obvious divide in the clubs now. Just like the EPL, you can say where teams are gonna finish. You know that the likes of Cheltenham, Crewe, and Hereford etc are gonna struggle, and you know that Leeds, Leicester etc will be up there, but the points gap won’t be exactly massive.

We're not one of these big clubs who can spend their way to promotion. The likes of Doncaster and Forest did that. It's now so tough for us to get promoted. The only thing on our side, actually, is the fact that we now have a very good potential. Our side could be one of the brightest, and one of the youngest to break out of this division. It won’t be easy, it never will, I know that, but with the current state, it’s gonna be one of the toughest years, in my opinion.

However, if Shez and the lads can break out of this division at last, as this division gets harder, does the Championship get harder?

    Just a little thought.

The problem the big clubs like Leeds, Forest, City, Wednesday, Leicester have in this league is every game they play in is the other teams biggest game of the season, the players are all up for it and there is normally a bigger crowd that gets behind the them. It normally takes them a few years to get settled to the style of play in league 1 before they manage to get promoted.

Our best chance was the Dowie season when we got into the playoffs, with the players we had and the money he had to spend we should have gone up automatically, unnfortunately it didn't work out. We have a decent chance next season of getting in the playoffs, we have some excellent young players coming through who gained experience last season and we also have the likes of Chalmers, Black and even younger kids like Bembo-Leto coming through as well. If Shez finds the right players to compliment what we already have then who knows next season could be our year. We've already signed 3 young players who will be fighting for a place in the starting 11 a couple more players and we have a strong squad next season

The Championship has got much stronger the last few years and now with all the money the teams relegated from the premiership get it is going to make it even harder to compete. If we do go up i think we will struggle to stay there

  19. Some of the instalments may only get paid in the event of certain circumstances which of course may never happen and so wouldn't be seen as part of the initial transfer fee.

As an example, Rooney earned Everton a shed-load of money recently as United won The Premier League and then The Champions League. Meanwhile, Scott Spencer left Everton on a free and so we get nothing for the add-ons there.

All hypothetical at the moment though but while Richards may not move now, I'd be amazed if he were still at City in a couple of years time.

I meant just the initial transfer fee. Say they agreed £10m transfer fee plus extras for appearances/winning the league or whatever, but city got that initial £10m over 3 years we would still be entitled to get our £2m straight away

  20. Also, although any Micah funds ( ) would come in installments, they are more likely to come in a larger lump sum first then a two or three smaller ones than be drip-feed entirely over the 5 years.

Is it definate they come in installments? Even if City get their payments in installments the transfer fee is a set amount and we get 20% of that, just because they get theirs over a few years that doesn't make it certain that we will unless it was written into the contract. Or have i missed something?

  21. I suppose it depends what camp you sit in a wooly liberal or a tory....i tend to be more for firm punishment these days as im sick and tired of all these human rights that are comin to the fore with new labour...

I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished, of course they should, i just don't get why the justice system should be different for different people.

I'm not normally a wooly liberal politically correct person by the way who jumps down everyones throat as soon as they say something that may offend someone somewhere the world, it's just i don't understand why people assume celebrities should be a role model to everyone and behave perfectly, many of them don't want their every move reported on in the tabloid press. I did some volountary work briefly with kids who had been in trouble with the police and stuff and the amount of parent who blamed celebrities for their kids crimes was unbelievable, they never taught them right from wrong, told them they didnt have to go to school and told them that when they stole cars, beat people up or whatever it was they had done it wasn't their fault. It's just a little thing that annoys me i suppose so i'll shut up going on about it now
