We are not gonna sign Doyle. I’m an optimist (to an extent) and certainly no Kusunga but this is not going to happen.

Well I hope you're wrong but deep down I know you're probably right.

  2. 50k for probably the best player I've seen play for us.

If we signed Doyle could he work out to be as pivotal as Ritchie was back then.

Could Doyle with Baxter be the foundations for success. If yes then he must be worth going for, that's if he's willing to play at this level.

It’s heart breaking I pretty much started last season in the prem, since then I endured the team and club slowly declining it the abyss.

Well I hope you get to see some from of success and experience some good times like myself and others on here have.

Things go round in circles so stick with them and keep hoping.

It’s almost impossible to create those days, we could match the wages back then, we have no chance now and I missed it all by about 5 years ?

Anything is possible, when I first started watching us I would have thought the same and we were in what is the Championship now.

Ask Bournemouth fans if they ever thought they would be in the Premier league or even Wigan.

Things can change quickly in football so don't give up hope.

I would love the younger fans to experience even a fraction of what I did in the late 80s / early 90s.

I would say that the team was individually and collectively the best team we have had at Boundary Park in the last 100 years.

That is very true, the best Oldham team I have seen in 41 years supporting.

But we beat and played teams off the park that on paper we had no right to do so. But that was our team spirit, togetherness and a great manager that got us on a roll and we never looked like losing games.

I still have people talk to me of the Royle days up here in Cumbria who say the used to love watching us back then.

  6. Free to write / say  what you wish but I don't expect anything from the big man. His time with us is in the past so any recommendations he puts forward may be great or not so great. I am sure Baxter was initially to do with Royle to some extent, fans seem happy with this. Other recommendations may not be successful but thats how we survive as a club of our standing. We need people in the know recommending players to us, some may work and some wont.

I wouldn't write / say anything negative against him out of respect. He deserves better IMO

As for long winded reply, you don't have to read it.

  7. Some of the comments on this forum are laughable at times.

I know its all opinions and banter but for god sake when you start showing ignorance and total disrespect to the person who brought the best times this club has ever seen then you are either a young fan who needs to educate themselves about our history and learn some respect or even worse you are old enough to remember those great great times but feel the need to be a total tool and forget what this man did for our club.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of our so called fans see Joe Royle as the man who got us relegated from the Premier League and started our decline.

Negativity is rife on this board and in the ground, I've had lots of arguments at games with negative tools who Boo and berate players for the least thing and that is tiresome.

I'm not a total optimist but can't be arsed listening to whining miserable people who only ever concentrate on the negative aspects of the club and expect we all should be the same.

Well I'm sorry for showing some optimism, hope, excitement about the coming season. I'm a fan and want the club to succeed but you have to be realistic.

I want us to walk the league etc but I don't expect it. I expect the players and management to give 100%, that's what we want as Oldham fans, is it not ?

Joe Royles team individually wasn't the best team but they always had great spirit and comradery and they got on a roll and never gave up.

    Show the man respect !!

Please give me one reason for optimism if our fifth choice striker in a relegated side is starting games the following season. He’s looked ‘ok’ against a few local pub sides - compare him to the calibre of strikers that other clubs in our league are signing. You don’t need to blindly optimistic about everything, honestly mate.

I'm not optimistic about everything pal.

Just realistic about what & where we are as a club at present.

You don't seem to have anything other than a negative point of view on most posts on here.

Its not good for you being a glass half empty person all the time.

Up to you tho, as is my realism of OAFC and the fact that we are in Div 4.

Its like you expect to know everything going on within the club,  Marquee signings, the ins and outs of everything.

Chill the feck out, we all want us to do well but we cant do nowt about it if we don't other than keep supporting or not.

Anyway- Replying to the actual topic title.

Have we been linked with anyone other than O’Gravy and Benteke Jnr?

    Nothing officially.

Maybe if Byrne is moved on and we get a fee for Hamer we will see / hear something this week.

For me Byrne can go, surely he would free up funds for a striker ??

I know money can't be magiced from anywhere but surely 250k for Doyle would pay for itself in the long run, just by being up there you could add 1000 on the gate and it's going to need a striker of that ilk to get us there.

Well i will donate £100 if 2499 other tics will that's him payed for, AL just pays his wages !!

If things were only that simple eh

Any money raised from those two wouldn’t finance Doyle’s leg. He’ll probably want 6k+ a week and I imagine the fee will be £300k-£500k.

Like I said my opinion or my logic.

I obviously am not in the know like you and a few others on here.

  12. For me similar to Holloway, both physical, will hold the ball up and will cause problems for defenders but NOT goalscorers.

Here is my logic or opinion.

WE get money for Holloway and replace him with a similar O'Grady who has played at higher level and it could be argued, be more experienced.

We now use this Holloway and Davies money to help finance a goalscorer, Doyle etc.

So we would still have a battering ram style forward but gained the finances to acquire a goalscorer.

Either good business, good fortune or I'm way off the mark with my logic.

  13. Good technical ability, presence and team player as a forward but not a goalscorer.

Poacher/ goalscore required If we are to be successful.

Baxter will score goals but he will also be a player who comes deep for the ball and dictates play.

Baxter will need a player to stay ahead of him but one who scores goals and makes the runs for his through balls.

Sadly a Doyle / Rowe type player fits this but may be unachievable.

I think this is the will be most important signing of the summer as I feel we will be Ok elsewhere.

Anythings possible and if we are looking for a keeper and I hope we might he would top my list.

Fingers crossed then, I think he would be a great signing but I think a goalscorer is more important than the GP position for next season, Doyle or Rowe maybe.

Who knows maybe Ripley and Doyle. That would be nice
