  1. Porter was a very intelligent player, definitely more intelligent than Davies is at the moment.

Theres no doubt that Davies has more natural technique and skill with the ball, he can pass a good ball and put in a decent cross when he wants too as well. With the right attitude and coaching he will go a long long way. But football is not always just about skill.

Porter to me played to his strengths, didnt try to much that he couldnt do, he could finish, he could get in the right place at the right time and on the whole kept his game simple when he had the ball and to be fair thats what good players do keep things simple.

Both of the players in my eyes have a good quality in that they dont seem to let it get them down if they miss chances, they will turn up to score another one!

  2. Porter and Davies are both very good young players.

Id love to have them both together. I think they have both fit into the category "many oldham fans will pick faults with them despite them being excellent players due to lack of effort/attitude/not paul warne/runs in a funny way/doesnt win 100% of headers/etc" ;)

Porter was a very intelligent footballer who knew were the net is. He was offside a lot, but then sometimes the pass was too slow, no?

Davies has loads of skill, and can make chances for himself. His shooting is a bit erratic but you can tell he doesnt let his misses bother him as he will pick up the ball and try again.

  3. to be now.

Interesting how the same fans who are so picky with the likes of Crossley seem to ignore the two or three catastrophic errors Stam makes every game...

But i think thats because the majority know that Stam when fully fit, (which i doubt he is at the moment), is a very very good defender. I would have thought after his last long lay off Shez would have liked him to get some reserve games in before throwing him back into the 1st team but injuries havent allowed this. I think it should also be noted that while maybe a coincidence, since his return we seem to be playing a lot less hoof ball from the defence.

  4. Rather than arguing over whether or not Crossley has cost us points here or there, or who boos him and who claps him, can anyone honestly say that despite our good defensive record they feel confident in him? I am not denying that Crossley has made some good saves, I don't know what it is exactly but its heart in mouth time whenever a cross from a set piece comes in or the opposition gets put through on goal. Someone mentioned above that we all prefered it when we had lutons 3rd choice keeper in goal and i tend to agree. If we offload Ricketts in January i would personally like some of the money spent on bringing in a new keeper.

  5. The guy that sits behind me dad is 100% sure that coming from Huddesfield to watch Oldham is a waste of both time and money! I think I may inform in next time he sits there that time and money are both precious so he should maybe take up some other hobby before its too late!! :)

I have got to say that i dont really enjoy coming to BP as much as i used to and i think it is the negativity rather than the moaning...away games remind me that going the footy is supposed to be fun!

  6. Maybe - I started off down around the shopping centre/market area, which is perhaps not the best part of town. There was one I went in that was split evenly between 90 year olds (men and women) swearing and spitting on the floor and some coked up younger blokes who were just glaring evils from the second I went in. I did find a nice one later, Riggbys, which served a fantastic range of O'Kells beer from the Isle of Mann (and no, I'm not telling you how many pints I had  ). Granted, some blokes tried to send me the wrong way back to Lime Street, but I took several soundings so that was OK.

To be fair on reflection liverpool does have a large share of idiots and rough pubs like the one you describe but sometimes the i think some people get a bit intimidated by the lack of dress sense - trackies or shell suit and the accent some undesirable looking and sounding people can actually be quite helpful and friendly!

its quite strange going to tranmere games for me last year i was stood at the bar in one of the pubs near the ground and people started talking to me as a home fan, didnt tell them that i wasnt and he helped get my drinks in so i didnt have to queue:) then after the game when we tried to get in the pub some of the people we were with were told by the police to head back to Oldham but they had to let us in when we told them we'd only come from 20 minutes away!!:)

  7. I got into Liverpool at about 2.30, so spent the day wandering around, having the odd pint and pie, and remembering what a fantastic city it is, only to be blighted by being full of Scousers. It's a long time since I've felt unable to go to the gents in a boozer without taking my stuff with me, one place I was in there was no way in the world I was going to use the usual routine of asking someone to look after it.

Leeslover i come from around that area of the northwest and thats a very stereotypical view - you must have been venturing into some rough pubs!!!

  8. The fans are the difference, unnfortunately you still get idiots going to watch football who would probably find it amusing to surge forward purposely to squash those at the front, im sure it seems like a lot of fun when your not the ones getting squashed but when your there with children or you are a child yourself getting hurt its not so much fun. I'm not against standing coming back - in fact i prefer standing, especially when the stand is full the atmosphere seems much better - but there does need to be strict safety procedures in place

gemma i dont think there is much need to worry about surges, there is still a few away days on terraces and i havent seen any significant surges apart from maybe if we score but that seems to happen with seats as well.

  9. skimmed throught the planning documents at work...id be really dissapointed if this doesnt go through now - i really think a new stadium will give the whole club a lift and redeveloping the current one means we will have a new stadium with at least a bit of character still - looking forward to moving into a new chaddy end in a few years time fingers crossed:)

  10. Amidst all this Pro/Anti Ricketts posting, one thing does jump out at me is:-

Numerous people keep defending Ricketts with "he's not fit comments"

    WHY is he not fit??????

He had a full pre-season including 5 pre season friendlies.

We have now played 11 competitive matches, so thats 16 matches in total. He has started the vast majority of these.

He's also been training with the club for about 14 weeks so should be pretty fit by now unless we are doing something badly wrong in training.

How many more matches and how much more time do people think he's going to need to 'get fit'??

I'm not his biggest fan but thought he did alright the other night against Dirty Leeds, it just strikes me that I can't see any reason why he should be any less fit than the rest of the squad at this stage in the season.

I agree he should definitely be fit by now, no excuses there, a lot of people are attacking him on the grounds of being one of the worst forwards to ever pull on a latics shirt, which is utter utter nonsense. Especially when compared to the hero worshipping Hughes is getting when he hasnt faired any better leading the line!

  11. After watching people rip apart Porters abilities last year, besides scoring all those goals, I fear for any latics player..... We do like to rip apart are players dont we... From what I have been hearing, he isnt exactly struggling up north either..

Totally agree mate nothing more some oldham fans enjoy than ripping apart players for no valid reason apart from obvious superior footballing knowledge! The abuse Ricketts was getting at Walsall from idiots round us was embarrising...so we then started to take the piss blaming ricketts for everything even when he was off the pitch im sure some of them thought we were serious and joined in!

  12. I was with you until I read the words in brackets. That's like saying move the iceberg because the Titanic is heading towards it!

Hmm i was expecting that bit wouldnt be too popular! hence the brackets:) TBH im coming to terms with the fact that im in the minority wanting to move ends...i do think the chaddy would be more fun if we got all the singers in there then all the moaners would probably move out especially if we were all stood up:)

  13. Ive moved from the chaddy for the first time this season in 11 years this season because the atmosphere was getting worse and worse. The few of us that do sing get told to sit down all the time and moaned at by the people behind...this is something that really annoyed me because anyone with half a brain knows that the part to to the lower left of the goal as you look at the chaddy will be stood up at every home game given the chance. Why the hell do people therefore get season tickets behind that bit and then moan at people for standing up and trying to make an atmosphere for the whole season.

Id love us to get a proper singing bit behind the goal in the chaddy end, i would move back in an instant because im getting even more depressed where i sit in the lookers with the moaning and lack of singing! (even better why dont we put a singing section in the Rochdale road end and move the away fans somewhre else:)

  14. The majority of teams in the Thai Premier League are company or forces teams.

However, I support a team who represent a city (and province). We are the best supported team in the country and attact a passionate bunch of fans. Our average home attendance is about 1,800 and we regularly take 200 to away games. There were 1,500 at the match tonight.

I appreciate that, by English standards, this is quite poor but here our home crowds are the equivalent of 100,000 at the Nou Camp!! Most other teams attract around 500/750.

Sadly, Bovril is not available at Thai football grounds but you can drink beer and eat as much somtam as you like whilst watching the match.

There was a cracking atmosphere at tonight's match as we ended a 4 match winless streak with a 3-1 victory which moved us back into 2nd place.

Thats ace - ive often thought about moving abroad for a bit so id love to be able to support a local foriegn team wherever i was living. Hopefully a successful one too after years of watching the latics slip down the league:)

  15. I'm pleased to hear that it is still a part of the English football culture.

I did it again this evening, on the way to the match. We won 3-1 and I'd like to think that my scarf out of the car window payed a major part in our victory.

Next weekend I intend to introduce throwing toilet rolls to Thai football :)

Whats thai football like do you get big crowds?atmos etc? or is this just local stuff as the countries quite big.

  16. I was just about to come in and type my part out, reading through thinking 'yes no one has mentioned it' then get down to yours.

GK, what a keeper, i dont think that anyone could over-rate him with anything they say. In my opinion he could have played at a level higher for longer. Great shot stopper, came for crosses more often than not, best kicking i have seen out of anything since and then of course his skills. I remeber him doing it in front of the chaddy, i remeber him doing it infront of the Rocky Road. Everytime he pulled it off was brilliant (and if Stevie is correct) to do that so often without messing it up is superb.

    Bring back GK!!

Anyone know what he is up to now? I saw him on the masters football a few months ago playing for Newcastle i think :mmm:

I knew there was a reason i loved Gary Kelly and its now all become clear his silky skills past attackers lol:) cant believe i forgot about that just made me smile for the first time all day in work, getting grumpy trying to give up smoking

  17. BP1960 - as an ex-scout was just wondering how much mentality comes into play with youngsters? Theres loads of players out there who seem to be wasting an awful lot of talent. Do some players with all the technical ability in the world just find it impossible to transfer it on to the 11 a-side pitch on a saturday whatever their frame of mind?

Sorry for the questions!:) i could probably ask loads more too, im quite intrigued in exactly what people look for in a footballer!

  18. I was impressed with Mansfields forward John McAlaskey in the CC this year, he looked a bit like Torres from afar in appearance...looked to have good technique, and quite a bit of talent and was quite tall, caused us problems early on. He looked a bit raw but the kind of youngster I wouldnt mind seeing on our bench!

  19. Didn't we get whipped 7-1 by Cardiff back in 2002? I think that was so bad I had to laugh - so if I was forced to pick a favourite defeat that would be it.

Can't remember much about it though - must have been so painful I've blocked the details from my memory.

Thats definitely my favourite i was in shock, couldnt actually believe what i was seeing, andy gorams return was just plain comical:) was nice to sing we gonna win 8-7 and i think cheering each of our passes as if we were the ones winning 7-1 if memory serves me correct!
