Disappointed with MMs post match interview, blames the players yet attached no blame to himself for the usual hand the initiative to the opposition starting tactic and poor team selection.

I'd bet no matter how poor certain players were he will still select them at Ebbsfleet. He seems reluctant to drop his favourites even when they turn in weak performances.

Walker should be a certain starter, but for some reason he can't see it.

I don't want to hear 'A work in progress' again.

With the exception of Hogan who was suspended he selected the winning team from Tuesday which many have said performed admirably. No problem in saying go again lads but today was awful.

Quite, they won't fire him if he's within a few points if the play offs. I may have not put it across properly. Whilst we are in with the pack chasing 7th it seems he'll be fine. They're willing to give him until mid December as they feel that gives any manager enough time to catch up.

There is genuine bemusement from senior staff and directors at the fans views.

Winning 1 out of our first 8 games doesn’t cause concern in the boardroom then.Very bemusing.

  3. My take.I could understand his appointment, the Royles knew him, past experience etc.I’ve followed Latics since 86,in that time I’ve shouted at matches for 2 previous managers to go.David Penney and David Dunn. Now I made my mind up about Unsworth pretty quickly,he constantly builds up the opposition,I wonder if he does this in team meetings. Now every match we start with 1 point,I have a feeling he clings to that 1 point and then with the likes of Norwood thinks we’ll have enough to get 3.The problem is we have no attacking intent,we play with the handbrake on.We lose the ball and then retreat to the edge of our box,the midfield is on top of the defence and the poor sods(or sod if we’re playing someone really good) is left scratching his arse 60 yards away. He’s had more financial backing and more support than any other manager I can remember.Oh and don’t get me started on his interviews,he regularly watches a different game to me and contradicts himself so much it’s beyond funny.I understand we don’t want to be known for sacking managers, that’s perfectly understandable, however if it’s blindingly obvious you’ve appointed a dud it’s best to get rid.I personally believe if he is a friend of the Royles he’d do the decent thing and resign. My final point ,we should never appoint another David as manager!

  4. Credit where it’s due they set up to have a go today something I hadn’t previously seen in a Unsy team.Must build on this on Tuesday now,in Norwood we’ve certainly got the striker but it’s all about the service which he thrived on today as Nuttall proved a perfect foil for him as his assists showed. We’ve set the standard today and the intent, well done players and management team.

Good episode thanks guys. Would also say a second thanks for your honest views, appreciate you guys are closer to DU than the average fan and that could sway your views, but the honest assessment of the shambles that Saturday was, is appreciated.

Few points mentioned on the pod which I flagged and thought was worth discussing. DU’s comments that better players would result in better results and improved stats. This comment at the time was massively alarming to me, it’s pretty much an acceptance that he doesn’t believe he can develop players or get a group of players to outperform as a team. It highlights his incompetence as a manager.

The comments that we should trust each other as fans / club / coaching staff. I can’t speak from the clubs and coaching staff perspective. But as a fan, I have seen absolutely nothing to suggest I should trust Unsworth. His favourite formation is 433, no evidence he wants to play it. Fast dynamic football, we havnt seen that in 30 odd games. Signings, he’s fallen out with players and axed any ounce of creativity we have had. He literally gives us nothing to trust or get behind. He didn’t want a relationship with the fans until it turned toxic and was pointed out to him. How can you trust someone like that ?

The away form. This has been consistently shambolic throughout. Our first away win was Dorking last year. If that form carries on into this year, which I have seen nothing to suggest it won’t, then we can say goodbye to both automatic and playoff hopes.

Matt’s comment that the playing side does not impact or is separate to culture. Absolutely disagree with this. We have a team that sits back, is negative, and grinds out results when we are lucky enough to win. This attitude reflects in the fan base and I’d imagine through the players also. If we played front foot, attacking, played to win. The fans would be far more up for it, the players would certainly be happier and it changes the culture of the fans and players. A manager that reflects the optimism of our owner would be my wish.

The Willoughby treatment. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Poor lad will be back on loan at Chester in a few months is my guess. Shambles.

Unsworths comments that a formation is not rigid. He is one the most rigid manager we have had. He’s stubborn, reluctant to change anything! To only make two subs on Saturday was brainless. How we didn’t change anything in the second half is even more puzzling. When Ward went off, that was a perfect opportunity to accept we have got this wrong and switch it. Nope we put a left sided player into the middle of the park (he actually played okay in fairness). But it highlights how rigid we are and how we have no plan B. He wasn’t at the game, fine, but he’s demonstrated his inability to change anything consistently throughout his tenure.

Overall, I made my mind up about Unsworth before that Notts County game. I shut up after it and accepted as results picked up that we had to get behind him, because as much as I think he is incompetent he isn’t going anywhere until this year. The pre season games and Southend confirmed we havnt evolved as a team, it’s the same old rubbish. When he joined initially, he said we have to play 5 at the back as he couldn’t trust the defensive unit, is that his opinion now ?  I want Oldham to win every game, but I was Unsworth gone asap. The sooner he is gone, the sooner we can focus on getting out this division.

People will say it’s one game, but this squad is so unbalanced. We have to many forward players, to many centre backs. Not enough full backs, and not one centre mid we can trust to control a game. We have no creativity anywhere on the pitch.

The positive is, things are never as bad as they seem. A new manager (correct appointment) and 2/3 signings to correct the balance of the squad and we would be up battling for the title.

Up to you DU to change it around, I hope you do, I have no faith you will.

Spot on,my thoughts exactly. We’ve a group of strikers who are more than capable of getting the goals to get us out of this league. But we’ve a manager who has zero clue how to set a ‘winning machine’ up let alone how to create the chances that these strikers need.Since his first game we’ve sat back, the midfield literally play 10 yards from the defence leaving the strikers completely isolated. Not to mention the gaping hole at right back and a creative midfielder which we’ve had months to address. For a guy whose on 3 times the salary of Shez he’s stealing a living.

  6. He’s obviously gonna be here next season which doesn’t surprise me although I personally would’ve got rid a couple of months ago. What I will find interesting is now we’re safe how we play, there’s no excuses for Rhinoball to continue unless that is indeed his preferred style and system of play.I however think we’ll get more of the same negative, defensive tactics he’s employed throughout the season.Which worries me leading into the summer as I’m concerned even with a competitive budget and decent recruitment he’ll still not be able to produce a successful football team. There are no guarantees with any manager but I’ve seen no improvement even with better players so what’s gonna change in the summer?

At the risk of doing a BP1960 Im leaving here now. Far to toxic and full of BS. Shame as it used to be a good place.

I go into hospital on Friday so have bigger issues to deal with.

Good luck all, we all want the same thing (most of us). Ill try to remember the prefiction league

Take care chap, hope all goes well.

  8. My worry is with Unsworth that he appears not to know how to set a team up.He also on top of that doesn’t know his best formation or best 11 with the players available. The squad was much smaller under Shez who had us 14th,since then we’ve brought in an abundance of new players with little by the way of understanding or how we’re trying to play.I am not a fan of chopping and changing managers but his record is horrendous and the odd win like against Dorking is précédéd and followed by abject performances. If he had a semblance of a structure or there were signs of recovery I’d be giving him more time but there simply isn’t.Managers are judged on results and they tell you all you need to know.If it looks like shite and smells like shite it genuinely is shite.
