Generally longer contracts are a show of faith, no? It's why you see the top players signing multi year deals.

Great having faith, look at the crap that’s happened with Gerrard and Byrne both under contract and earning decent money, granted it looks as though Gerrard has been sacked but Byrne is a huge issue, his salary alone would cover 2-3 very able players at this level. It was obvious why we offered him a deal due to his academy pedigree at City and undoubted ability, but he’s young, immature and toxic if anything about the malicious challenge on Fane is true hence why we are stuck with him as no other club will touch him with a barge pole

  2. Let’s give the bloke a chance, can he do any worse than some recent appointments?

the fiasco behind the scenes needs sorting out, cannot continue to delay wages and not pay suppliers, need to start doing things properly for a change, need  lemsagem to pull his finger out and put new personnel and financial structure in place to enable the manager to move the team forward

I was in agreement with most options apart from keeping Clarke and releasing Gerrard.

Both are a liability in terms of pace and, during the recent campaign, I didn't notice an upturn in fortunes dropping Clarke for Gerrard.

Another factor is, in my opinion, Clarke is a better leader.

Opposite for me Clarke lead by example which last season was great this year not so, for me Gerrard better on field organiser though I believe he had as much confidence in placide as I do in a peace accord between Israel and the Arabs!

For years we’ve struggled so other than the younger ones who actually give a shit bin the lot and start again

  4.

Stood at back of east stand, clocks ticking down we get a throw level with their area, moimbe throws it to Hamer who was running over to take the throw??? Fucking non senseical

last minute in injury time  same happens this time Hamer does get ball, why the fuck isn’t placide in the box, surely the manager knew Rochdale had won??

small things that probably wouldn’t have changed anything but sums up the poor attitude of some of that team

When I bought my season ticket, I knew that there was a real possibility that we could go down. Whatever the outcome, I am not done.

I’ve watched Latics for 52 years so perhaps I have known many more bad times than you and in a way am better prepared for our drop back to the basement. I agree that our relegation is fully deserved- we simply did not win enough games and the attitude today from a number of the team was shocking.

’smug comments about Rochdale’ this does not impact me in the slightest. They are not my views and we, along with every other club in the league, have individuals who behave in way that only sets them up for a fall.

Has the club really got no ambition? I don’t accept that either. We are a small club with many great people who work behind the scenes and follow the team. We will come again and I am prepared to give the new owner a chance to make an impact.

A decent fans bar in the North stand would be a good start.

In the immediate aftermath of yesterday’s abject showing it is understandable that emotions run high.Take a couple of months off and see how you feel then. You never know. You may change your mind.

    Well said!

    Im done with league 1!!

lets hope we can regroup and come back stronger whoever the manager is and the starting 11 come August

  6. Problem is the owner is no doubt heavily involved in the recruitment hence Wellens comments

cannot see how we can enjoy

a successful season who ever is in charge with an owner doing the recruitment

Wellens is the reason Doyle, Bryan and Byrne came

ALs only 2 players that did ok were placide and moimbe, the rest were awful

On the plus side Ollie Banks is a decent league two player as Swindon testify and he played well against Carlisle in jPt scoring a worldie

Interfering meddling chairman have us in the position we are in, keep sacking the managers and blaming them but it doesn't solve the problem, AL forcing a load of crap players firstly on Shez and then on Wellens sealed our fate, I can guarantee you we would of had a very different season if Shez was allowed his one main transfer target instead of the clown we've got for a keeper now, clubs a joke and the one person who can change that is the owner.

Think this hits the nail on the head, I’ve just got Home from six fields and feel today’s performance summed up our season in general, we are group of individuals no team ethos at all and no balance

im not fussed if Wellens stays or goes but one thing is certain the recruitment of the squad was shocking, no balance in the side and ultimately the games we’ve played with balance, a right midfield player with a right foot who plays there and a left footed left midfield player (Bradford at home) we’ve done well

byrne is a no10, Doyle needed someone next to him upfront, Nazon isn’t a wide player, it’s not rocket science put round pegs in fucking round holes

I've only seen it on Twitter but it's not clear enough to read, but basically there's a 2 page spread on Latics in today's rag basically harping on about us not paying players and staff again, more on the Fane issue, and other stuff.

Anyone actually given it a read?

It's not from Nixon either, so not sure whether it's just lazy journalism and just the Fane story plus a load of old news, but it's not good reading either way...

Journalist is Ken Lawrence, usual crap about players not being paid on time, normally hear that first on here or twitter ??

mentions Fane and that AL has suspended him without informing Wellens and that PFA involved by Fane

looks like a few half  truths and some fiction combined

  9. Thought Wellens picked a side with more balance today, wasn’t sure what he was thinking at first but could see as game went on it was a 4-4-2 with a diamond in mlidfield with Gardner at the base and Byrne at tip

didnt create a lot but kept a clean sheet

benyu looked like he hadn’t played for a while which he hasn’t but offers more forward impetus than Fane

gardner worked his arse off and thought Pringle was ok, would have kept him on and took benyu off but Byrne not tracking back probably swayed Wellens into taking him off

some folk calling for him to be sacked before Northampton game are retarded, we lost our first five games and were awful I’d have given my right arm to be in this position after that start

    It didn't go well though....

Got to say this was on Wellen's watch. I know things were tricky then, but  organising a trial isn't that hard. Inless it was Paul Jewell's job....!

LaticsNik with the tweet about it.

Leta face it 9 turning up was 9 more than turned up Tuesday night!

  11. Agree that Byrne should be played as a 10 and given licence to roam and provide passes to play forwards in. Wellens realistically has 2 games to save his job and quite possibly his managerial career as any rookie manager with a relegation on their CV will struggle to land another job.

he either reverts to the formation that brought him success which is 4–4–2 with Byrne given freedom and allowed to wander which makes that formation a 4-3-3 or try and provide some defensive stability and play 3-5-2 with moimbe as LWB and either Hunt or Hamer at RWB. Personally would play Hamer there as he’s a better crosser of a ball than Hunt

Im as pissed off as everyone else after last nights result but the positives are we continue to make chances although we ship goals for fun, can honestly see us putting 4 or 5 past someone maybe too little too late though

and remains to be seen whether we could concede less than we score

Sooooo....after another blank show at Rochdale will Richie finally be bold and pair Doyle and Holloway up front from the off?

if so then he should turn his attention to the midfield four; Fane and Gardner definite starters leaving any two from Byrne/McEleny/Pringle/Nepomuceno.

Back five picks itself assuming Moimbe still banned.

Wimbledon are in form and it’s going to be another tense game ?

Problem is 2 upfront leaves midfield exposed as Byrne effective playing as a10, play him wide is no good as he drifts in and leaves a huge gap

I’d be bold and go 3-5-2

took hunt into central back 3 as he’s shit going forward and play Hamer RWB and Tope LWB as he’s looked a bit more lively than Nepo that gives Central midfield 3 of Fane, Gardner and Byrne who I’d expect to thrive with protection behind him

He’s a Yoonited fan who fucked us off twice as a player for the irresistible Doncaster and Shrewsbury...

Doncaster who give him £6k a week ( a lot more than he got from us) and Shrewsbury who gave him £1.5k after he asked us for £1k a week and Corney offered £500! I’d fuck us off too and I’ve followed the team for 39 years

I would like to see Byrne played centrally as a number 10 in behind Doyle but I'm probably in a minority. On these shit pitches I'd prefer the extra legs in midfield to two up front, one problem we may have with that is that  we have a real shortage of quality in midfield especially centrally, for the size of squad we have the fact we can't put out a consistent decent first eleven is baffling.

Yeah needs to have extra man in midfield,, at bury and yesterday we were over run in midfield and we cannot keep relying on trying to out score teams.

for me if Gerrard played yesterday pitman wouldn’t have scored first goal, as for second goal placide needs to launch it rather than trying fancy stuff on a shit surface and awful conditions think teams are targeting him as they know he will try and pick a pass

overall a bad day at the office, agree that we need to start quicker

be tempted to play 3-5-2 to allow Byrne some space especially at home and away I’d go 4-5-1, Pompey and bury did that against us and caused problems

Stoke away, Victoria ground, FA Cup 4th round reply, 1994..... we were 1-0 up, Beckford [ex Port Vale - they were giving him loads].... they'd battered us for a long period. Toddy Orlygsson, playing for them, had hit the crossbar and someone else the post. It was like the Alamo at the back. We were stood on a terrace behind the goal with their fans on the top tier throwing coins and spitting at us.... they all began singing "Going down"..... I started [to my pleasure at the time] singing "We are Premier Leaue" back to our Div1/Championship hosts, which every Latics fan in the ground joined in with. They began filing out of the ground shortly after.... Lovely experience.

Remember this game, we did get battered and still won

went into a pub before game and it was like a scene from the America Werewolf when I ordered drinks everyone just went silent and stared at me and my dad, probably the worst experience I’ve had as a latics fan was at that game with all the shit being thrown at us

  16. Just got back and satisfied with a point at a ground that is absolutely shocking for us.

we had them for 60 minutes but felt we sat back too much and inviting them on with the quality of the their players was always risky and so it proved, if anyone would have said we’d take 4 points from 6 against Bradford and Blackburn I’d have ripped their arm off.

just hope we have no fresh injuries and someone capable of filling in at LB for tuesdays game which is a  must win
