Scapegoat
1895 Pine Villa, 1897 Oldham Athletic? Though I thought we became Atheltic in 1906 with the move to the Boundary Park site?
Bertie_Dugger
Probably the last time someone sat down in the Rochdale Road End.
Guest sheridans_world
Taken from 'Oldham Athletic - Complete Record 1899-1988' The club played for two seasons from 1897 as Pine Villa before changing their name, although some sources give 1894 as the dat of the clubs foundation. However, the first time their name appears in print - so far as the writer can find - is Monday 18th November 1895 when the result of a game played the previous Saturday was reported. It is just the bare scoreline, Pine Villa beating Boothill Albion 'A' by 4-0, and it seems that 1897 marked the start of any competitive league football. The 'Villa' was almost certainly chosen in admiration of Aston Villa, who won the League and FA Cup 'double' that same year. In less than 15 years, Oldham Athletic were realistically challenging for similar honors. It was a rapid rise. There is more, it goes on to recount the history of Oldham County, who of course failed following a creditors meeting at the Willow Bank Inn. This left the Athletic grounds, now know as Boundary Park, empty. In July 1899, Pine Villa took over Oldham County's old ground and were on their way..... as Oldham Athletic. outoftheblue
For the record, Pine Villa originally played at pitches that were roughly 300 yards West of Christ Church in Chadderton (Now Wiltshire Rd). Boring it may be BUT YA DIDN'T KNOW THAT DID YA?
