Diego_Sideburns Posted February 3, 2009 Share Posted February 3, 2009 Alan Davies, one of rugby league's post-war greats, has died at the age of 75. A centre, Davies played 391 times for Oldham during their trophy-winning decade of the 1950s, scoring 174 tries to become the Roughyeds' all-time leading tryscorer. He won 20 Great Britain caps, toured Australia with Great Britain in 1958 and later moved on to Wigan, for whom he made 132 appearances including one at Wembley against Wakefield in the 1963 Challenge Cup final. When I was young I used to go to watch Oldham Rugby occasionally and collect autographs. Alan Davies was a brilliant player in a great team. Michael Turner, an Oldham RL historian, said: "Alan was one of the greatest centres the game has ever known. Many supporters regarded him as the best player ever to have played for Oldham.
