BLACKPOOL'S impressive pre-season campaign continued with a 4-2 win at Oldham's Boundary Park today.

Goals from Ben Burgess, Keith Southern and a brace from Brett Ormerod gave Ian Holloway plenty to smile about just a week before the start of the new campaign.

Former Chelsea and Espanyol striker Enrique De Lucas became the latest trialist to try and earn a contract.

Former Walsall winger Ishmel Demontagnac and ex-Oldham centre back Will Haining also started.

And with the trip to QPR looming, Pool put in a performance that left the manager more than satisfied.

League One Oldham gave Holloway's men a stern test in a game that was always hard-fought and lively.

The contest started with a flurry of goals.

The home side went ahead just 51 seconds in when Keigan Parker – yes, the one that helped shoot the Seasiders to promotion – skipped down the right and delivered an inch-perfect cross which Pawel Abbot headed past Paul Rachubka.

But the lead didn't last long as Ben Burgess struck right-footed on four minutes, following good work from trialist De Lucas.

Less than 60 seconds later the Seasiders were ahead, Keith Southern starting and finishing a good move by heading in Alex Baptiste's fine right-wing cross

Oldham, who looked decent throughout, equalised on 19 minutes when Abbott grabbed his second, heading in from close range after Rachubka parried Andy Holdsworth's deflected shot.

The Seasiders made five substitutions at the break, and another as the second half progressed, and one of those replacements – Ormerod – added two more goals.

His first arrived on 73 minutes when he profited from good work by Billy Clarke and Taylor-Fletcher to score at the back post.

Taylor-Fletcher created Ormerod's second, slipping a sideways pass into the path of the striker who converted with ease.

A very worthwhile exercise and a good performance.

POOL: Rachubka, Baptiste, Haining, Edwards (Evatt 45), Martin (Crainey 45), Taylor-Fletcher, Southern, Vaughan (Mitchley 80), Demontagnac (Clarke 45), Burgess (Ormerod 45), De Lucas (Euell 45)

OLDHAM: Brill, Worthington, Holdsworth, Hazell, Smalley (Steer 55), Abbott (O'Grady 75), Lomax, Furman, Gregan, Parker (Stephens 78), Taylor

They must have been watching a different game, because we were gash.

For a championship side, they were woeful, except for the last 20 mins. If we would have had a defence to match the rest of the team. Holloway would have been crying on the way back home.

I thought Latics played well until the equaliser, this was about the time Worthington was struggling with an injury, he wasn't replaced like for like as Whitaker is not a ball winner, hence therein lies a problem.

We have a bigger problem in defence. Parker & Worthington will always spoil the party(at last), we need someone similar in defence. Gregan would have fitted the bill 5 years ago, but if he misstimes the challenge, he cant get back quick enough, and as we have already seen, Brill bricks himself on a one to one.
