  1. I want a manager who can turn round a poor run of form.

    Hopefully we've got one!

Definitely not a crisis. Went to watch MK Dons v Stevenage with my brother who's an MK season ticket holder and Stevenage were absolutely pathetic. A 4-1 defeat really flattered them, could have been double figures, they are a team in crisis and that's one of the relegation places sorted !

  2. Ahhh. Rotherham. Does anyone else instantly think of Roger Wylde? That was the best football i'd ever seen from Oldham in an away game up to that point.

Yes I do. early 80's (1981 ?), was at games at Rotherham & Wrexham, didn't Rodger score a hat-trick at Wrexham and 2 at Rotherham, or was it other way round ? Just remember it was great football at the time but typical Latics did we not fall away towards end of season for a mid table finish ?

  3.

Without a shadow of a doubt - the late great Alan Groves.

His ball control was on par (if not better than) Christiano Ronaldo. From the tender age of 8 I was fortunate enough to witness the genius that was Alan Groves.

He made us laugh, he made us cry (with laughter) as he tormented defences week in week out with alarming regularity. He always acknowledged the crowd (whether home or away) as he playfully tied defenders in knots and on one occasion he was one on one with the final defender and beckoned with the crowd to beat him on the left or the right before scoring yet another goal for Oldham.

If he had played for a more high profile club, I have no doubt he would have gone on to represent his country at World Cups/European Championships.

Before his untimely passing, I met the great man whilst receiving an award for winning everything with Heyside Juniors when I was 15, and a more friendly, humble man you couldn't wish to meet. He loved football and his public.

    My Hero!!!!

PLUS 1, Knew Alan as rented him a shop and a lovely bloke with some very dubious friends/hangers on (Car related) best entertainer by a long way yet very different off the pitch. Taken advantage of by hangers on and a gentle bloke.

Only player that comes close to skill was my other hero Simon Stainrod. PROPER footballers who could make a ball talk and remember not these "beach" balls of today either. Pity no film of the way both played true genius and Alan should have played at higher level. Could run and run.....as residents of Royton would see him training. Banter with the paddocks second to none. Gestures with adults, about the defenders, pat on head for kids on wall, asking which way to go round him or through him, next attack. Doubt we will ever see another Groves. Some far fetched stories re Groves, sitting on the ball etc but true. One memory was him sitting in the house opposite Southports ground having a cup of tea in window and then wandering over to club about 2.30 and playing a blinder.

Totally agree - no one has come near Stainrod or Groves in my 40 years watching Latics

  4. What's the latest situation with Portsmouth's financial difficulties, is there still a danger they won't get to the end of the season ? Having now done the double we could potentially have our six points deducted when expect some of our 'relegation rivals' might benefit if they have already lost to them - should we be concerned ?

  5. remember it well froze my toes off that day ,in the reply i got pushed by a stoke fan out side after the game for having a big smile on my face , and its great to see sir jimmy on tv again in the good old days

Bob, I remember this incident and the match, was with you, your cousin Anthony and John B. Didn't get to the "rematch", but this is one of the few times in all the years watching Latics that we can the better of an "injustice". Remember Garth Crooks played for them but hadn't realised an ageing Howard Kendall had as well.

  6. I found this to be the case the only time I went back in 2010 when Penney was in charge. Was there with my brother and we guessed that the attendance was somewhere between 4.5k and 5k, so when they announced 8.5k with only 100 Latics fans it's hard not to get suspicious.

Not sure if they get any benefit or disadvantage from doing this. It just seems a bit fake, and they don't strike me as the type of club who would be fak- oh right.

My brother is MK Dons season ticket holder (I know sorry !, but he does live there) and he confirmed that season ticket holders are counted whether they turn up or not ie 5,500 is always the minimum

  7. Good news.

I agree, I can also see him becoming a real fans favourite as he brings something a bit different, good skill and touch and a real entertainer in the mould of a Stainrod or Groves.

If he can emulate these two who are the greatest entertainers I've seen in a Latics shirt it might also start bringing back some of the stayaway fans, or is this too much to hope ?

  8. The save was really important must admit.

First home game for me this season and really enjoyed it - apart for all the moaning in the Main stand. Brill was being criticised from the first minute from "supporters" behind me, blamed him for their first goal but gave him no credit for the save which at 2-2 which won us the game. PD was right, playing against 9 men with all outfield players behind the ball makes it difficult - credit to Plymouth for a great defensive display and to Latics for keeping going, shame though on all you moaners !

  9. The evidence, 12 months ago, for England to be a significant contributor to this World Cup was high.

A combination of club form, international form, injuries, humping the left back's ex and tactical predictability has seen a decline over the key build up period, resulting in the :censored:e that was provided to the nation during the last few weeks.

Why was it high, not on my reckoning. The WC qualifying group was easy, England managed to beat teams like Slovenia, Japan, Egypt and Mexico in friendlies. If they had to play Germany, Holland or Spain for example in the last year might have got a better idea on how poor we really are.

  10. I'd agree with one caveat. Torres plays in England so naturally our media especially those owned by the same bloke who controls the rights to the Premier League (something which I think has gotten way beyond a coincidence) big him up. I wonder if you had asked the Spanish who was the better player 5 weeks ago, (even 5 months or even 20 months ago) who was the better player Torres or Villa how many would have said Villa. Messi has looked good in parts, so has Kaka, the other 3 have shown just how overrated they are. If you had asked me who the top 5 players in the world are 6 weeks ago I'd have said Messi, Sneijder, Xavi, Iniesta and Villa (in no particular order).

And the best players in the tournament have been Mueller, Villa, Sneijder and possibly Forlan, none of whom play in our Premier league and so weren't hyped up in the same way. Coincidence or not, I don't think so. Yes the Premier league pays the biggest money and is drooled over by our media but it doesn't mean it has the best players on current form. This is the problem why expectations on England's chances always far exceed the evidence and the reality.

  11. Maybe 'sickening' is too strong a word, but it was all a bit cringe worthy.

No he was right - it was sickening. Whilst before the game I had no particular affinity for Uruguay the ITV commentary was so biased I ended turning the sound off - well done to Uruguay and gppd riddance to the Ghanians and all their historionics. If Rooney had done what Suaraz did in the same circumstances he would have be a national hero !

  12. Ger were a better team, the Premiergreed is at the route of all this.

Spot on - until the Premier League brings in restrictions on number of overseas players England will never improve.

Our kids will never get the opportunity to play at the top level but other countries can - look at Uruguay for instance, in the quarter finals they've benefiited by most of the top players playing in Europe where the money is. We need to get over this obsession with the Greedy League and realise none of our players are the "world beaters" they are hyped up to be.

  13. I actually believe Sean Gregan would have defended better than that. He wouldnt let a :censored: ing aimless punt cut through the defence like that.

I actually enjoyed watching Germany play. Young team without superstar egos, who play for each other. Exactly what we do not. Of course they were helped by some absolutely schoolboy defending.

Never mind boys... off to your millionaire hollidays now...

Jagjielka, Rodwell, Wilshire, Walcott, Wickham... get these lads in the team and forget about this golden generation of total underachievers....

Not at all surprised England lost - it should have been my more, we were totally outplayed. Have said for years our players have been over-hyped, there was no way they were going to win the World Cup. Good time for a reality check by the media and the idiots who believe everything they read in the "red tops" or hear on Talk Sport !!

  14. The players look like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders we will be playing a nation this week who only need a draw to get through and even if they lose this won't be the disaster it will be here. Where if England lose it will be somekind of national scandel and it will be seen as somekind of hopless flaw in our national character, the education system, family values, and an example of the Tory infused "broken britain" The Daily Mail will then call for football to be banned.

Yes it would show a flaw in our national character where we believe that we're better than everyone else even though all the evidence is to the contrary. We need to get a grip and realise that England aren't world beaters and if they get through what is one of the easiest of all the groups (which I believe they will), then it's going to need an awful lot of luck to even get as far as the Quarter finals

  15. Anyonelse not that surprised Englands first 2 games of Italia 90 drew 1-1 and 0-0 respectively plus our captain went home then this team is not much different inerms of talent between that one either just that their wasn't the same hype surrounding them now. Its the fault of the tabloid press and all the gulible morons who believe whats written in them.

Very true - anyone who thought England would stroll to the Final have been seriously deluded and believe verbatim what the press have been hyping up. I am no longer bothered about them, let's see what they can manage against a country of only 2 million people who have shown more team spirit than England ever do.
