I think we create our own issues, I would love to see a back 4 of Kitching Hobson Raglan Sachdev with a midfield three of Conlon Gardner and Hopwood and a front three of Norwood Dallas and Fondop .....  A mix of youth and experience .. leaving a decent bench of Sheron Garner Hogan Hope Walker leaving us options everywhere. ... I know Big Mike is not available but just for a game I would like to see what the shape and passing would be like ......

I expect Norwood to be off in the summer thats why Garner has signed (opinion only)  and of the defenders Id like to see Raglan stay as he is the only ball player in there. Im sure there are reasons why the tem selections appear a little bizzarre at times .... these reasons could quite easily be shared.

    Who is Hopwood?

We have 2 in Atherton and Walker, but have never been played together. We will regret not giving Walker a proper run, he will go on to play at a far higher level than us.

I've resisted responding to any of your posts for some months now as you seem to take any question as some sort of personal affront.  They're not - they're just questions.  I'm not in the business of trying to wind anyone up so I'll try once more and stress that this is just a question.

Walker's career summary so far (Wikipedia may be wrong of course) starting from September 2020 which was when he made his full debut at FL level.

Full season loan from Preston to Carlisle but only played 4 league games and the loan was terminated in January 2021

Moved to Fylde, then in NLN.  Only played in 2 games due to injury

In November 2021 moved back to Fylde on loan and played 5 games before heading back to Preston in January 2022

In May 2022 signed for Blackburn but yet to appear in their first team

September 2023 sent on loan to Morecambe but recalled due to lack of game time

January 2024 joined us but barely sighted.

My question comes with no side, no implication.  It is just one borne of interest and curiosity.  What have you seen of him and where that suggests we should be playing him as a regular starter and that he'll go on to play much higher?

Personally I’d love to see some of our own come through and sold for profit- that hopefully would be re- invested in the first team. We can’t just rely on Frank pouring money in, the club needs to look at every avenue to make money.

I think the realistic objective (sadly) of the youth set up is to flog players wherever possible before they get anywhere near the first team and hope that one of them generates a sell on fee.

and prior to that we have to suffer England underperforming at the Euros because Southgate sets us up defensively…😳

    sorry… wrong thread …

As we barely have a fit centre back (and only one good one anyway) hoping for a change of approach...  We all know what hope did...

  5. The fickleness of fans in regard of signings can be readily demonstrated via Joe Garner's recruitment.

When he arrived many (me included) wondered why we were signing a 35 year old striker, particularly when our main man is also in the latter stages of his career.

Then he scored a few gals and his recruitment was an act of genius.  His abilities in the dark arts were seen as what we had been missing.

Now he's on a barren run and his shithousery is embarrassing.

And our prospects next year are not seen as being enhanced with a first choice forward line with an aggregate age of three score years and ten

As you will realise you'd be better off backing the requisite 7 wins/qualifications and rolling over the winnings.

Average odds of 5/4 would return about 300/1, and if the first 4 wins weren't enough to get us into the fifth game then you'd still have a good return 💰

Indeed.  Although if we happen to beat Rochdale and Halifax we'll be a lot shorter than 5/4 for the games v Oxford & Wealdstone.  The bookies love punters who don't think about such things.

Antony is the epitome of no end product. Doku will get better he's only 21. At least he has something. There are some very good wingers around now. Jarrod Bowen for one, Gordon another

You've proved my point.  Bowen isn't a winger as they used to be.  My money is on Doku fading away; show pony

Not working out well at Old Trafford though !

Playing them on the "wrong" wing seems to be the norm nowadays but they need to have the ability to take full backs on the outside as well now and then, something Antony certainly can't do.

What can you expect for £85m...

Wingers as we know them (Holden/Adams) aren't really a thing anymore are they? It's more wide forwards who cut in etc. Ones that can play in a 442 or wide in a 433/451.

Last summer's recruitment didn't feel like it was recruiting to a formation or formations. He referenced having to play 352 because of the squad but we didn't have a rwb and Kitching apparently needs someone in front of him. So that was the best we could work to. I presume he's already identified how he wants to play and will be recruiting appropriately over this summer.

Part of it is the diminution of the role of the traditional centre-forward.  There's no point flinging crosses over when playing a false 9!

Did Mellon not say at the fans forum wingers don’t feature much in the modern game so basically won’t be used?

Sadly he's got a point.  There are precious few of them in the traditional sense.  Grealish is described as a winger at City but he's hardly in the mould of Rick Holden!  I guess the modern mantra of pressing is pretty incompatible with the development of luxury wingers; can't press much when you're hugging the touchline.  One current winger comes come to mind; Doku at City.  He's a prime example of why they've fallen out of fashion.  Loads of skill, quite exciting, sod all end product!

Just listened to Halifax v York. York totally out played  Halifax and were on course to win but Halifax equaliser came after the ball stuck in the mud!! In injury time.

If we start trying to play some football 😂 ha.ha. we could beat them Playoff place still possible, perhaps??But probably not after Rochdale beat us?C.O.Y.B.

    .

7th is just about achievable if everything goes our way.  3rd & 4th are already gone and I can't see those currently in 4th, 5th and 6th not getting more points than we do even if we will all four games.  It's done.

    Ah another conspiracy theorist ?

It just reflects what the bookies perceive as our actual chance of going up given our current form.

That and other liabilities in their book.  Bookies have algorithms rather than opinions these days; the objective of bookmaking is to be profitable whatever the outcome.

It is unquestionably a disappointment that we look very likely to miss out on the playoffs given where we were 5 or 6 weeks ago, no one should avoid responsibility for it.

But I can't see us being a significantly smaller team at this level next season and we almost certainly will have an advantage budget-wise over almost everyone who's in the league, even without parachute payments.

For me the big review should be the strategy for how to use the advantage in the best way possible, which in my mind wouldn't just be focusing the budget on the first team and would be putting more of an emphasis on a conveyor belt from youth team to first team to potentially playing at the highest level.  That will make us a healthy club for years to come, regardless of what division we're in.

We've still got the problem that it's a big jump from youth to first team. I wish the B team had taken off

If Dave Og would facilitate it, then I'd have no qualms sticking a tenner on it with him...

We're evens to win on Saturday

York are 23/10 to beat Halifax tonight.  I guess we'd be slightly shorter than them, so let's say 2/1

Vs Oxford we'll be favourites, I'll say 4/6

And probably a similar price re Wealdstone, lets say 4/5

That gives cumulative odds for winning all four at just over 18/1; 40/1 is probably more realistic but we're always underpriced
